Artist, Should You Explore More Or Focus More?

I hear this from artists a lot and I've also experienced this a lot--I feel all over the place, wanting to learn everything, but then I hear that if I want to be a 'serious artist' that I need to choose and then focus more. But when I do, it just doesn't feel right; my inspiration just goes limp. What does it mean?
It can be maddening, but over the years, I've noticed that, in addition to the voices around us, we also have voices inside of us, prompting us to do this or that, but those voices can often argue, conflict with one another, or even directly contradict. I've had to learn that your clear voice of intuition and creativity is not duplicitous, but clear. Learning to distinguish between that voice and the voices we've picked up along the way is the trick. You've got your own guidance, it will always lead you in the right direction. But it takes a little work to distinguish what it sounds and feels like.

Yes! Exploration is definitely at the heart of creativity. Variety keeps us interested, engaged and excited. But I do recognise where I have avoided art activities that are hard that my heart knows I must stick with for the overall good of my art. Thankyou.

Yes, me too-that’s where knowing which voice you’re hearing is so important. It’s normal to avoid hard things, but when we know that’s what’s happening, we can actually make a choice. Thanks for watching. 😉

WOW!! JUST what I needed to hear! And shared so WELL. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your inspiration with us. You have motivated me to PUSH though, instead of putting a piece in a pile because I feel stuck and uncomfortable. I WANT layers in my art, but the struggle is REAL. I love watching and learning with every Video you bless us with. THANKS MARABETH:)

Glad it was helpful! And I’m so happy it’s helpful-it is definitely hard to push through, but it gets easier and easier simply because you begin getting more used to it. And your works begins to progress, which is added incentive to stick with it.

Wow! Going deeper and overcoming something is what happens internally for me. It’s the ‘oh no what have i made’ comes up. This was a great question

The notion that exploration is actually avoidance is interesting and rings a bit true for me. But, the fact that everything we explore becomes part of the next thing we do rings true even more loudly.

It’s amazing how both can be true at once, as well! We really can’t get it wrong in the long run, which is a really nice and comforting thought. 😊

That's been me! Ive had various abstract categories that I have always moved around. I think I just get bored and want to try something new. And yes, I too questioned it as I was always hearing that you need to have a cohesive body of work. In addition to my abstracts, I have floral abstracts and have also done figurative. Currently I'm working on florals, but I've taken an interest in still life and plain aire landscape. I want to explore these as well!! 🤦‍♀ Oh and I just finished a small floral abstract using tissue paper that I painted using my left overs. I titled it "paper flowers' And that idea came from your videos!! it was so much fun!

I love to hear this from you, Elizabeth. I love your work so much and it’s always comforting to hear other artists that say they just don’t fit the mold or find it hard to take the prescribed track. Luckily, I’m old enough to realize that I just have to follow that voice, whether it fits the formula or not, for better or worse! And I’m so happy you enjoyed using the tissue-I’d love to see it!

I love how you approached this question and distinguished between exploration and escape/ avoidance of discomfort. As a kid, I used to explore many different ideas/ skills and when I feel that I learnt it, I go for another. I guess there was a kind of boredom that pushed me to move from one thing to another. Still the same today. I got really passionate about new ideas and suddenly I lose this passion. I’m afraid I’m not going anywhere in my art work.

I think it’s a fine balance-it takes some real self-reflection to see if it’s something that is overall an obstacle or roadblock or if it is just the way you learn. Having a hunger to experience new things is actually an incredible quality unless it is also impeding you from really digging into a subject when you’re really wanting to. Don’t you think?

@@marabethquinart you said it really well. Indeed, thinking about what I did, I think I enjoy challenges and I’ll go in deep, as far as I’m interested in the subject. I never give up unless I don’t feel the thing anymore. One thing is consistent in all my divers passionate experiences, that all are about creativity and art. I’m happy to listen to you tackling this subject. I tried once to join art class, but the teacher who is an artist kept saying that mixed media isn’t art. And we need to focus on one field,… etc. I didn’t stay long as I didn’t learn much. It was so overwhelming and blocking. I felt like loosing who I’m. I didn’t join any art classes after that. I need excitement and freedom around me to be able to create. However I’m not yet where I want to go and that’s make questioning my learning habits.

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry you had a teacher like that. I don’t understand that, and yes you deserve to be able to explore anything that lights you up. I think it’s our interest in things that indicates where our potential and compatibility lies, so I hope you trust that. Keep creating!

Thank you!! I am one of those artists who is attracted to a wide variety of subjects and styles and has not ‘settled’, which I have sometimes felt badly about. I found your advice super helpful and especially liked the suggestion to pay attention to distinguishing between the 2 voices - the one that’s scared to push through in a given style/subject to truly learn what I can from it as opposed to the soul voice giving me a creative prompt.

I love this. This is my problem…if it is a problem….i love it all. I thought I had Attention Deficit Disorder but I seriously just love EVERYTHING. Macrame, straight acrylic abstract painting, collage, gel plate (probably my favourite), writing, up cycling vases, watercolours, creating Kleenex covers that are beautiful that I bought at goodwill. I can always find something that sparks my interest. My head feels like it’s going to explode.

Totally relate-I think in a best case scenario, we should feel that enthusiastic! And the restraint should really come naturally (not that it doesn’t take discipline) and in the right time when you know you’ve landed on something you want to cultivate. This describes me as well, and I actually DID find out I have ADHD 😆

We also always hear "it's all about the process." So, in my mind, the exploring IS a process? We need to listen to ourselves because our art is from our souls. Thanks for the guidance!

This was very good. I definitely like to explore and play with a variety of mediums and art forms. I could never be happy with only making art to sell or to please others. I must allow the art to be aform of self expression first and foremost. Sometimes, I get inspired in multiple directions and feel scattered or get distracted. Other times I can see a clear pattern of avoidance if the art requires a skill level I hadn't achieved yet, and the process is painstakingly slow or laborious. Afterawhile I move on to something else, but with the plan to come back. It could be 5 years later even. I know I do better when I take the pressure off the table and make art for fun or stress relief versus try to make something look a certain way, especially realistic. I'm not 100 % sure I found my artistic voice yet despite creating my whole entire life and being in my mid 50's- or maybe it's just that my voice keeps changing as I try new things. I sometimes wonder if I should just embrace the abstract intuitive art making that I do best and stop trying to do things like realistic portraits, but I want to be able to master those skills, too. I'm not terrible at drawing animals or humans, etc, but it's a bit if a struggle. I do like landscapes. Like you, I love texture and layers. Your painting turned out lovely, and is very inspiring!

If that’s the case, you might really like the video I just released today-I think you should keep following that impulse to explore, and it sounds like you are really aware and observant of what’s going on inside and for me, that has been the ticket! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9pnjLd6tZeUgJs.html

What’s funny about this idea that you have to do just one style is that I thought the beauty of art is that there are no rules. I’m afraid if I choose one thing that I might miss out on something amazing I might create. I’m still waiting but I guess you could also look at it as a jack of all trades and a master of none kinda thing. I will say sometimes I feel like I’m on sensory overload with all of these ideas and I wonder if I forced myself to choose one thing maybe I’d be able to focus better. But so far I haven’t been able to do that. So it might just be that if I did do that I’d loose all my drive to create. I think maybe if I thought one thing that I created was that much stronger than the rest I could get on board. Idk I like the idea of the artist that has collections of different stuff. It makes this seem more ok 😂

I think we are all different about this-some people will choose one career and only do that their whole life, then there are people like me that have several different careers. I think it’s how we’re made and figuring out how to listen to that is crucial-it can be hard because there are so many external voices that are now internalized, but I think observing your thoughts and how they feel, questioning why you feel certain ways and just patiently letting it happen goes a long way toward beginning to really know yourself as an artist. I think starting with the idea that there’s nothing wrong with just being the way you are is a big one. You’re doing just fine and my guess is that you’re getting a lot clearer about it all than it feels like you are right now. 🥰
