You are the most inspiring artist to me. I am so grateful to be taking one of your classes. My apologies that it's taking me so long, but I treasure everything I've learned and every time I go forward with making papers or materials, my intention is to continue the collage process. I'm grateful for your encouragement. I know because of you. I will keep going in this direction. Great LOL.

There is absolutely no timeline in which you need to work through your class-in fact, going at whatever pace works for you is BEST! Im so happy you’re enjoying it so much-that’s always what I hope for!

There are so many things I love about you. First is your voice, its very soothing. Second, is that you speak out loud about your journey, doubts and learnings unlike other artists who majorly focus on painting techniques and hardly every show their vulnerability. You have no idea how much it is helpful for others, who are constantly asking the same questions and in the end getting lost feeling like they are not good enough and judging themselves too harshly. Your videos help understand the psychology of an artist. It is super interesting to see how many choices an artist has to make spontaneously at every second of the painting. This brain training also helps in solving real life problems. Your lessons go far beyond the canvases and sheets.

I used Strathmore Mixed Media 184 lb Paper-it’s their 400 series and it takes all the medium really well. If it gets a bit curly, I just bend it back into place.

Could you please tell me what paint/paints you are to make the beautiful orange yellow & gold pieces ? Is it watercolor just mixed with water or two different colors mixed ? Mine come out too orange or too yellow .. they're not attractive at all ! I need more softness. I also can't find plain tissue paper that holds up to the paint & glue . It rips so easily . I've tried so many up to this point . Thanks ! This came out beautiful as always 😊

That main botanical figure is actually watercolor on rice paper. The rice paper soaks up the watercolor really well and it is stronger than tissue. I also find that when wanting something like tissue, the medical exam paper is more consistent and holds up better. If you’re in the U.S., you can find the medical exam paper on Amazon. Here is my supply list where the medical exam paper is, as well as the rice paper I use: www.marabethquinart.com/favorite-art-products. As far as the color on that focal point, I used watercolor, painted a layer and then let it dry before doing another layer of a slightly different color. Getting more than just one color in there is key to making it interesting.

Some of the papers were painted with acrylic paint, and the biggest, boldest one was done with watercolor on rice paper. Thanks for the kind words 😊

This is SOOO beautiful! I love your choice of colors and the way you “trace” around some of the botanicals with gel medium to make it easier to tear out of the larger piece of paper. Thanks for sharing your process..…I learn something new every time I watch yur videos and classes.
@marabethquinart5 күн бұрын
I’m so glad you like it, Cindy! And that’s not gel medium, but just plain water that I’m outlining with so it tears easier.k

So pretty ...I refrain from cutting my papers into quadrants because I want to frame something as my end product . I don't want to " waste " my time & energy but I probably need to experiment more and accept cutting up my work .

This piece is beautiful….. when doing this video I wish you would explain about the papers you use….are these all painted papers that you did? When cutting out the large pieces I wish you would explain how you are doing that without scissors. There are things that go unexplained….you ramble about the process and not the how to. I am thinking the video is a lead in to your classes. Not showing the how to. I do love your work…this piece is beautiful. I look for more on KZfaq as many are sharing their how to.
@marabethquinart5 күн бұрын
Thank you! These are all my own painted papers, and to ‘cut’ the larger pieces, I’m just making the cut line with water from my paint brush and then tearing it. The water makes tearing super easy. I do have an extensive class called “The Layered Botanical” that’s all about this process I’m using here-it’s far too much for a KZfaq video. My free videos on KZfaq are where I show the overall process and talk about my approach mentally/emotionally because that’s actually where a lot of people get hung up, so sharing that part it’s important to me and it’s what I love doing.

Adding the watercolor at the end to beef up the saturation of the big flower really made it pop. I enjoyed watching you make this piece, Marabeth, and am inspired to get back to painting tissue. Thanks for posting this process video.

Hi Marabeth I am curious. Has your practice developed in that you are using less acrylic paint or is this just in terms of your botanical pieces? I love this painting, the colours are so soothing. Thank you ❤

Thank you Charlotte! I still use acrylics with my collage work, although I spent a number of months exploring just layering painted papers and then created a class on it called The Layered Botanical. It was a super fun exploration!

@marabethquinart5 күн бұрын
Not always! Sometimes you layer and it just doesn’t work out, but I’m like you and can tend to panic or be scared to layer more, but that’s always a risk in the process. I try to make myself keep doing it and learn to take that risk a little more easily each time.

Great work! 😍 Are all the collage papers made with watercolour? How does the watercolour stick on the glazing liquid when you paint over the collage pieces with watercolour?
@marabethquinart5 күн бұрын
The papers are tinted with acrylic, then botanical figures are painted with either acrylic or watercolor, depending. The glazing liquid doesn’t seem to deter the watercolor from adhering to the surface, so when I’m done, I spray varnish to lock it in place and then brush varnish it.

I love the idea of using tissue paper. I was a Kindergarten teacher for many years and loved doing tissue paper collage with my students. We would also enjoy many beloved children's books by Eric Carle who uses collage to make his illustrations. I never thought to incorporate it into an acrylic painting. Duh?! I can't wait to try it. Thanks
