Before I begin an oil painting I will tone a canvas. This "How to Oil Paint" tutorial is a lesson and demo on toning a canvas. In fact, it’s a how to paint on canvas tutorial that includes tips you should know when toning, not just a canvas, but any support that’s been primed. So, you'll learn how to tone any oil painting background or oil painting base layer.
This art lesson explains, in detail, all of the materials you need to tone a canvas, oil painting background or oil painting base layer. It also teaches the difference between a transparent tone (called an imprimatura) and an opaque toned ground. And, tells you the number one mistake I see students make.
And, yes! You can absolutely follow along as I demonstrate, step-by-step, how to apply a transparent tone to a canvas, oil painting background or oil painting base layer. Plus, watch as I explain how to create an opaque toned ground, too and show you why it isn’t my favorite way to tone a canvas, oil painting background or oil painting base layer.
Also, you may be wondering if you should even tone a support at all! You’re not alone. It’s the question a lot of beginner oil painters ask -- "To tone or not to tone?" Experienced artists, too. Well, in this art tutorial video I give you my best oil painting answer to that question, along with three reasons that back it up.

ABOUT ARTISTCHRONICLE:
Dedicated to teaching you the skills needed to draw and paint successfully.
Hey! I'm Don Stewart. You'll notice that I produced a lot of the videos here on the ArtistChronicle channel in 2009 to 2013. Where have I been? Well, in 2013 my priority became getting better at teaching offline. But now, in 2020, I'm online again! With renewed zeal and dedication to providing quality how to draw and how to paint video lessons!
This video is one of the latest and more in this new format are coming soon. But, whether you watch the latest or videos from a decade ago, I genuinely hope you find them all to be informative - and any kookiness to be entertaining. Hey, learning should be fun! You remember more :)

Grat video. Very helpfull. I recently decided to try toning with acrylic so that it dries faster. I bought 3 tibes....burnt sienna, phalo blue and white to lighten them I'd needed. Do you see any need to the whiite or blue for toning or should I just use the burnt sienna for now. I am new to painting so Im kind of clueless at this point. I do excel at collecting art supplies though.
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
Haha… collecting art supplies is the funnest part! Either way would work with acrylics. Tone with acrylics thinned with water for a transparent quality or tone with acrylics mixed with white (no thinning needed since acrylics dry right away) to create an opaque ground.

@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you're finding the videos informative! It's probably the scent of thinners/solvents that is bothering you. Not the paint itself. A good quality odorless mineral spirits like Gamblin's Gamsol might not be so bad. There are also water-soluble oil paints that some artists use. But I don't use them and so know nothing about them.

Great video. Very helpful. Solvent and medium. Could you please suggest a couple to start priming for oil on canvas. If you could write them down specifically in the comments I can look for them in the art supply store and purchase. Then get the priming practice in :) Thanks again brill video
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 2 жыл бұрын
For an oil painting solvent, any artist quality 'odorless mineral spirits' will do. Gamblin's Galkyd, for example, is an excellent choice. Turpenoid is another popular brand. As for mediums, there are so many out there. They all have different properties and effect the paint differently. Check the manufacturer's (Gamblin, Winsor & Newton, etc) website for details. Currently I use 2 parts stand oil with 1 part odorless mineral spirits as a medium.

Very helpful video, and I’m a new subscriber! Question: I’m working on mixed media paper … do I need to gesso that before toning?
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yes - don't oil paint directly onto paper that hasn't been gessoed. Acrylic gesso works best.
@ATINKERER
@ATINKERER 2 ай бұрын
I've always thought that thinning a paint as much as you recommend would leave the pigment without enough binder. I sort of imagine it to be like getting the powdered pigment, mixing it with water, and rubbing it on the ground. After the water dries it would create powder layer that would separate the oil paint from the ground, so it wouldn't stick to the canvas. What do you think?

Hello love your vids!! I stretch my canvases and gesso them with acrylic paint (which I believe gesso is acrylics) anyways after I gesso can I still add toning to it or is it only to canvases that have not been gesso? I started painting using oils recently
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Actually, you shouldn't paint on canvas (or any type of support) that hasn't been gessoed. The gesso is what protects a canvas from being 'degraded' by the oil. So, the answer is yes… tone after applying gesso. :)
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! You should only paint on a canvas that has been gessoed. Gesso serves to protect the canvas. So, yes, tone over a gessoed canvas. 😊

@starbucks1971
@starbucks1971 4 ай бұрын
hello. I am a student who started oil painting for about 3 months. I was reading an article about blocking and was curious, so I would like to ask a question. What oil should I use when blocking? I searched through numerous videos and articles, but couldn't find it. The two oils I have on hand are flaxseed oil and gamsol. (Please understand that I am not good at English, so I am using Google Translator)

I'm planning a painting with candles with lots of light color paint. Will the tone make it hard to make my colors light enough?
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 2 жыл бұрын
Fortunately oil paint is opaque, so 'light enough' won't be an issue. Keep in mind, I tone to about a 30 to 40% value. Tone too dark and you may need more than one coat of paint to cover.

Did you mix oil paint and water in order to tone?
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
No. I mixed oil paint and odorless mineral spirits. I think there's a water-mixable oil paint available now. But, that's not what I use. Regular old oil paint and water don't play well together. Thanks for asking.

Sir,can we use turpentine oil in acrylic paints
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
Acrylic paints are water-based. So, no don't use a solvent like turpentine with acrylic paints. And, if you're asking about mixing wet oil paint with wet acrylic paint, that won't work either (although, I must admit I haven't tried it). You can paint over acrylic paint, that has dried, with oil paint. But, don't paint over oil paint (dry or wet) with acrylic paint. Hope that covers it for you.

No one is ever clear on which solvent or medium to use. It’s very vague and it’s frustrating because I can’t find any advice anywhere. So for “medium” can I use Galkyd? Because it says medium on the bottle. And can I use paint thinner because that’s a solvent. I’m just really confused
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different mediums out there and they all have different properties. I consider Galkyd to be a good all around medium. Think of it as a faster drying linseed oil. Visit the Gamblin website for details about Galkyd and other mediums they offer. As for the paint thinner and mineral spirits you find at a home improvement store, my understanding is that they are the same thing. Yes, they are solvents and can be used, but I avoid those for oil painting because they are less refined. Instead I use only artist quality "odorless mineral spirits," found at an art supply store. Gamblin's Gamsol is excellent.

The canvas toning method I show in this video helps keep the translucent quality. There's another method which involves tinting a white, opaque ground and then applying that opaque ground to the canvas. With that method you are correct. Not as reflective. 🙂
