This step-by-step oil painting tutorial teaches you how to oil paint a portrait from life, wet-on-wet and in one sitting. In other words, it's a how to tutorial on the Alla Prima oil painting technique.
Yes! You can absolutely follow along as I demonstrate, step-by-step, how to paint a realistic Alla Prima portrait in oil paint. And, here's a fun fact -- the live model for the oil painting demo is my mom!
Included in this how to oil paint art lesson are the benefits of starting with an underpainting, why I prefer painting on a toned canvas, why to put color everywhere vs paint one section at a time, how to use value markers, how and why to liven up your brushstrokes (hint: it's one of the characteristics of the Alla Prima oil painting technique) and much more.

ABOUT ARTISTCHRONICLE:
Dedicated to teaching you the skills needed to draw and paint successfully.
Hey! I'm Don Stewart. You'll notice that I produced a lot of the videos here on the ArtistChronicle channel in 2009 to 2013. Where have I been? Well, in 2013 my priority became getting better at teaching offline. But now, in 2020, I'm online again! With renewed zeal and dedication to providing quality how to draw and how to paint video lessons!
This video is one of the latest and more with this new format are coming soon. But, whether you watch the latest or videos from a decade ago, I genuinely hope you find them all to be informative - and any kookiness to be entertaining. Hey, learning should be fun! You remember more :)

Real beard: fine. Fake beard: creepy. Broccoli: odd but funny, like you and me. Art lessons: very clear and helpful. I would like to restart oil painting (not since high school, now 65) but doing acrylics this year. Studio is off my bedroom so i need another place for stinky oils. Would love to see more portrait lessons, I'll be studying that next few weeks at WAM. Thanks!
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle Жыл бұрын
Haha! Appreciate your comments and input! Even the 'odorless mineral spirits' most artists use these days wouldn't go too well with your bedroom scenario. So, I can see why the acrylics choice. If it were me, I'd figure out a way… just love oils too much. Enjoy your studies at WAM!

How long does it take to dry?
@artistchronicle
@artistchronicle 3 жыл бұрын
The drying time for oil paint varies. It depends on the color used, how thickly the paint is applied and if any mediums are added that slow down or speed up the drying time. But, generally it takes anywhere from a few days to a week or two for oil paint to dry to the touch. Also, a good rule of thumb is to allow for at least 6 months of drying time before applying a final varnish. Glad you asked!
