Learn how to change group seals and shower screens on a coffee machine.

Whether you have a domestic or commercial coffee machine you are going to need to change the group seals in them at some point. Or perhaps you want to remove the shower screen and give it a good clean. The good news is that it's quite a simple procedure and something that you can easily do yourself.
If you can do it yourself you save a few dollars rather than paying to have a technician come out. Apart from a new group seal there's only a few basic tools required that you can easily get your hands on at any hardware store.

I've just replaced my shower screen and seal on my Bezzera. Funny to see this video pop up right after. Special thanks for the tip about using the portafilter to ensure the seal is fully in.

Thanks. Really helped to put in the new gasket on Faema E98. The lubricant and one side at a time to push it in did the trick for me. BTW put dish washing detergent instead of grease.

yes you can use dishwashing if that all you have, food grease won't taste or smell, but dish wash will make bubbles, so be careful

If you can’t get the gasket out you can actually screw a screw into the gasket and that will push it out of the group. Of course only if your replacing the gasket

Awesome video. I have an old espresso machine which has identical parts as the one you didn’t show how to replace gasket. I’m looking to replace it but don’t know what size of the gasket should I buy. Would you please share the info of sizes of gasket, shower screen and the o ring which is embedded in the brass piece. this is a 58mm group head, the seal size if new you can buy a 7mm, as its ages and wears you many need an 8 or 8.5mm

a small amount of food oil on the top of the seal that end up inside the machine.

Very helpful video thank you. Just replaced the group seal in my old Sunbeam coffee machine but it is still leaking water around the group head. I bought the new seal suitable for my model number. Any ideas? It is an old machine.....

We found that the head on some of these machines are actually made from plastic. And this can crack causing it to leak, turn it upside down, remove the screen and seal and inspect. 👍🏻

Good Video! I just got my new Espresso machine. How long do you thing will a seal work if the machine is in use 2 times a day? Is there some experience?

if you don't leave your handle in and pulled hard locked in place, you should get a year out of it. it should feel soft when you put it in and bring it tight to seal. if you find it stops sharply then you are close to needing a new seal. 👍

The silicone seals are a bit more flexible and can last a bit longer. The cost a little more. If your group head and handle are worn the silicone can move more when locking in and could go a bit too far if you have the wrong size as it compresses a bit more. Other than that they are good. 👌🏻

It’s the same, but it has a screw in the screen to remove and you pick out the seal

Good question, I’m pretty sure you do have a seal and screen in that machine. It’s been a few years since we have serviced a lever unit

First time I've seen a video with a paper packer, which I think I need because even after replacing the gasket with original part extraction spits out the rear. I have breville bes900 dual boiler ( discontinued ). Hard to find a "thicker" seal.

Got my new shower screen and gasket installed. Thanks for the reminder and the helpful tips. I used your tip for the porta filter to put the gasket in place properly and it worked a treat 👍🏻 I'm also now putting in my calendar an annual event to do change these parts.

Today, I took my shower screen out for the first time and gave it a soak in Cafeto and no issues pulling it out, but slight issue putting it back in, I ended up taking out the filter basket, and and inserting the portafilter, and and then put the filter basket back in the handle and locked it in, that I pulled a shot nice and clean

Great video! I have a DELONGHI EC260.BK and the ims 51mm basket that i bought for it gets stuck in the group head(with the stock portafilter). Is it the seal or something else?

Depending on the model and design. Most likely you'll have to take it out.

It’s a bit easier to pull out a seal if it’s hot, but be careful of the hot metal as it can burn.

I have problem with my home espresso mechine that after every extraction there is an floating water above the coffee in the basket. what is the cause? is it to much coffee or to little or problem in the pressure?

There are a few reasons, let’s keep it basic. Too low on the coffee dose and water will float above the coffee, it’s not that you have too much. If you have old coffee and dose low it won’t expand like a sponge and fill this space where the water will lie after an extraction. It’s only a machine issue when you get no water releasing into your drip tray after the shot has stopped . This has to happen to release the pressure, but if you remove the handle and it does not hiss or spurt coffee out from where the handle seals then the machine is working ok and it’s your bean age or dose. 👍🏻

Hi… does an espresso machine NEED a gasket on the group head? I cant get my new o ring gasket on after i changed my old one on my very old la pavoni :( im a female and have a hard time w things like this

Yes it does, make sure the machine is hot, and soak the seal in hot water to soften it. Then you can use a small amount of vegetable oil on the top side of the o-ring to help. You go girl!!🤜🏻

I can’t unsrcrew my shower screen the screw is hard jammed. Any tips on removing a stubborn shower screen screw?

Tap a screw and it helps it budge, put your blind in an soak it for a 10 mins time with descale, but don’t activate the brew lever as you only want the chemicals to say in the head. Other wise lock pliers if you don’t succeed your into drilling it out and re tapping the thread. 😩

Too much of a brutalist approach. Using the ear of the portafilter to smash the gasket in is not necessary. All one needs to do is fit the portafilter in once the gasket is seated on it's spot

I find stuff like this to be a bit of a strawman. I play on Lone wolf and I lead 4-5 BFD raids every lockout, I see tons of other groups constantly forming without too much thought beyond team comp. Spamming DPS LF BFD in LFG and trade is not a good way to be invited as a DPS. When I put together a group I have a minimum of 10-15 hunters/rogues/warriors asking for invites. In ANY version of WoW as a DPS you have to be proactively asking for invites. Cause everyone who would see your post in LFG already has DPS coming out their ears
