I had to get carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists... I've been dealing with them since 2019 and am still dealing with pain that prevents me from doing things for a while because of how bad they were. This can't just develop from drawing, but from many repetative motions. Please, please please take care of your wrists.... You never realize just how much you use them until it's limited

Thank you for the wrist tips! I injured my dominant (left) wrist in a car accident 2 months ago. I had to stay off of drawing for a full week, and even then, could only draw for short periods (so no animating). It's better now, but it still aches after about 30-60 minutes, depends on what I was doing and my wrist posture. I wanna take care of it to prevent further injury, as I plan to work in the animation field, so thank you! (side note, recently I got a laptop stand that angles my laptop, and my wrist feels soooo much better while I'm typing now)

The comments about eye health really got me 🥲I am extremely myopic and am currently doing eye exercises so I don't end up freaking blind and/or needing surgery (I am very much looking forward to getting LASIK when I can though....) Look after your eyes people, you don't miss them till they're gone!
@paulwoodford1984

Eye exercises can actually be dangerous if you over do it. The eye is not actually a muscle. What’s helped me improve my eyesight is a good diet. Stop drinking alcohol, and stop smoking if you do. stay hydrated, eat things like spinach, carrots, fish, foods rich in lutein, caronoids. Plus at least thirty minutes of good exercise every day. I have improved my eyes by one whole myopia in both eyes. They are still pretty bad but for that sort of improvement at the age of 38 is pretty damn good. Lasik is still not going to be a long term solution. if your eyes start getting bad again, another procedure is not recommended Take care
@grimdarkartist9176
@grimdarkartist9176 9 ай бұрын
Myopia is caused by the shape of the eye being too short. Your eyes have a lens inside them to focus the image of what you’re seeing on your retina and glasses help the light focus correctly like if your eye was the correct length. The big concern for artists is making sure your eyes don’t get dry from staring at your work for too long and if you’re a digital artist, not damaging your retinas by staring into a light source (e.g. your screen). Once you’ve finished puberty, your eye doesn’t really change shape anymore. The big worries when it comes to vision tend to come with age, namely cataracts and presbyopia, which is when the lens in your eye gets stiff and can’t focus on things close up anymore. You can’t really prevent those parts of aging. If your optometrist/ophthalmologist gives you exercises to do, you should do them, of course. They would know more than me. I had to do exercises when I was younger, not for myopia but strabismus (the muscles that move my eye has issues). This is just what my college education has given me so far.
@Drolfox
@Drolfox 9 ай бұрын
@@grimdarkartist9176 Myopia can definitely be caused by incorrectly shaped lenses, but in can also come about from issues with the focusing of the eyes that you aren't born with; this is why some people have perfect eyesight when they are kids but develop myopia when they are adults and sit at a computer focusing at a short distance for hours at a time. And your eyes absolutely change shape after puberty - not as dramatically of course, but because tissues and cells are dying and regenerating all the time your eye never really stops growing or changing.
@grimdarkartist9176
@grimdarkartist9176 9 ай бұрын
@@Drolfox I meant the eye as a whole is too long (I said short previously, but that was incorrect). The lens wants to focus the image on the retina, but the correct projection would be closer than it is, hence glasses correcting vision. This is what is generally what congenital myopia is and other causes tend to have other, more specific names. For example, nearsightedness from an astigmatism or strabismus preventing the eyes from focusing on the same object through positioning. Maybe I’m focusing too hard on myopia as just that physical thing, since that’s how I learned it and just haven’t had someone use it more broadly than that before? When myopia is explained in the anatomy and physiology classes that’s usually how it is, with a little diagram showing what someone is looking at and where the projection through the lens would focus best compared to where the back of the eye is. I did look it up and eyes continuing to grow longer past puberty as a result of focusing on close objects for longer periods of time (e.g. as a result of smartphones) seems to be a relatively recent discovery, which would be why it didn’t come up during my class.

I was told that carpel tunnel syndrome can go away on its own if you catch it early. The way I understand it, there’s a groove that runs across several of your carpel bones. That groove is lined with connective tissue similar to a ligament. Inside that groove you have tendons and nerves and more connective tissue goes over the top of it. The connective tissue lining and covering form a tube and that is the carpel tunnel. Carpel tunnel syndrome is when that tube gets inflamed through repetitive motion and stress from the tendons running through it. If you don’t try to push through the pain, if you stop what you are doing and let your hands and wrists rest, maybe ice them, the inflammation settles down on its own. But I was told this stuff at a safety meeting at a warehouse job. I don’t know if that makes it more likely to be accurate or less.

Can I ask what kind of wrist brace you use?
@OpusMagenum
@OpusMagenum 9 ай бұрын
I would like to add to this, as it was not something I ever considered before. If you have hyper mobility in your fingers or wrists (Like me), abusing that flexibility for a while, even accidentally, can also cause injury. I suddenly developed pain and tingling in my palms and wrists as well as my elbows that made drawing or desk work impossible. I spent three months in a hand therapy clinic getting massages, ultrasound and working on exercises to help counter the pain, and learn how to not flex my wrists as much. I also got finger splints to prevent my fingers from hyper extending. This plus a compression glove and braces for sleeping made it so I could use my hands again. So just because you were born to be double jointed or hyper flexible, doesn't mean you should do it all the time. It can do damage in the long run if you aren't careful.

PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOUR ARMS After many years in my teens hurting myself while doing art and playing video games, as an adult my arm finally had enough when I began to do desk work at a computer. All because I didn't look after myself, now my arm suffers tendonitis and it hurts just to do daily activities. You don't know how much you NEED your arms and wrists in day-to-day activities until you can't use them.

I've been struggling w de quervain's for months now and the healing process is so slow and painful thanks to just how long it took for my tendons to even begin to heal :'D i cant even draw or use my phone for a long time without the pain flaring up so much. its kinda depressing tbh i lost so much interest in art lately from the pain that has pretty much been steadily building up over the years of me stubbornly not taking breaks when drawing something💀💀 thankfully sleeping w a wrist brace on does ease the pain most of the time

For someone who has been wearing glasses for a few years now, All that she is saying is completely true i recommend it if you dont wanna have to wear glasses 24/7 or worse, I findthat if i spend my entire non-working day doing something like writing or drawing, or just reading/sleeping I find it difficult to focus on far away objects and it causes instinct tears when my sight is so blury so if you do have glasses(or not just eyes in general) letting your eyes see far away things often can be a big help, as yesterday I did that and my vision is much better for far away objects than the few days before. Keep up the good work!

One thing that annoys me is drawing on a table/desk that is slightly to high, it means your upper arm is not relaxed, your forearm is holding weight leading to higher wrist use, equalling OW. I had to do this for a while and it meant not being able to draw for longer than maybe 30 minutes before conking out.

Back in june my doctor suspected I might have some sort of early carpal tunnel (yup at 15) but the cause was from using a laptop keyboard so much so I just got a mechanical keyboard which helps a lot. My screenless drawing tablet helps a lot too since I just rest my hand (with a splint) on a flat surface and move most of my arm to draw and its also put me into a better sitting position

What do you use to draw with? Cause I've had my right wrist hurting, but draw with my left. I noticed that when I use the hotkeys on my Cintiq my right wrist is at an angle that stretches the tendons and makes it hurt if I keep it in that position for too long (I've had the bad habit of resting it on the tablet as well instead of my desk). The problem has been fixed my resting on it less and being more aware of the positions I put that wrist in and correcting myself. Of course there are lots of other reasons why it might hurt. It would be good to keep in mind what you're doing with your non-drawing hand while you're drawing as well.

When what you need to keep your body and wrists healthy is behind a pay wall that is a bit to high to jump, for now all I can really do is stretch but I can't really fix my posture because I don't have a desk or table, my chair is a beanbage chair and my room and my drawing area are the same place and i manly do traditional art so if I'm not carful I can get my bed stained with maker or accidentally break a light or clock, because my eyes don't like bright light but also needs light and glasses to see.😢😢
