Love this way of doing it- I'm trained in drawing and not painting. Drawing is easier for me to handle because it's more forgiving when making mistakes than painting is. I think I'll actually try painting after watching this. Makes the first few tries of painting a little less scary and intimidating for a graphite/pencil heavy artist like myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for the gesso explanation - I totally get that now. I do love loose paint sketches - if I'd done this one I might have stopped at the loose stage and maybe done another version fully painted so I'd have the best of both worlds! 😂

This was really helpful and I liked that it was a real time video. You're always super inspiring and motivating! Watching your videos always makes my day a little better :) And btw, here's a quote that I think is really great: "You never lose, you either win or you learn." I think it's improtant to remind ourselves about that, I personally should do it more often. The fear of trying new things and be worried about that we will fail. Often prevents us from trying, well at least that's how it is for me. I just wanted to share that.

Shading and putting layers of colour on cheeks is quite a challenge for me especially using just pencils. Getting just the right amount of defined realism highlighted is what I am practicing; it may or may not get easier when I move to a digital tablet.

This was really helpful to see all of the steps and how you take it real time! I was just curious, it looks like you were using gouache more as watercolor in this painting (I've only just started experimenting with gouache and mostly have used acrylics previously). What was your reasoning for going for gouache here instead of watercolor? And also, is this how you normally use gouache paints instead of more opaque applications? Thanks!

I had a question regarding the way you hold your pencil. I've been drawing for most of my life and never have I used my pencil (or marker, or digital pen or whatever, except a brush) in a different way than when I write: same placement of the fingers and the hand. It feels natural and confortable. But I see a lot of artist I love using a more "loose" hand grip with their pencil when they sketch, either the way you hold it at the start of your sketch or as if it was picked up like a flower (between the index and thumb, with the thumb facing up). Is it something you learn in art school or that you use to make smoother sketches?
