In this Arturia Pigments 4 Sound Design Tutorial, I show you how to make your own kicks starting with the foundations of what makes a kick drum, how to tune the kick drum, and finally how we can use this method to synthesize tom drums from the same patch!

Great tutorial. Very easy to follow along. Do you have a tutorial for an EDM type kick drum? That would be sweet!

Thanks dude! So edm kicks can cover a wide range of kick styles, is there one in particular that you want to make?

@@jonaudio I made a video of the sound and tried uploading it, but it came out garbled. ugh. Idk how to share it. I know the name of the sound. Do you have Splice? The name of the sound is Lev2_E_32.wav.......It's in the Leviathan 2 pack. It's a deep sounding, punchy kick that you would hear in dubstep. I'm sorry I can't just send you the sound. ugh. I tried my best. I have limited hotspot and no Wi-Fi.

@@jonaudio kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7ucpNOd1LSrlJc.htmlsi=Br4i2RR5eTOpPj2r a good example is the kick you hear in this song. It starts at around 1:40 in.

Fantastic video! Does having the aux FX send/return set up this way take away any of the “dry” sound? I’ve been wondering if this was a way to have 3 more effects slots but wasn’t sure if the routing made it possible to have all of the sound be affected.

Thanks man! So the way the Aux tab works is quite interesting. The Aux tab is a separate bank of three effect slots that are separate from fx A and B. so you know how we can route FX-A into FX-B or vice versa? The aux works independently of the FX banks A and B. The manual says that turning up the send knob will send any active voices to the aux bus. We can test this by loading up Engine 1 as analog, selecting a sine wave for oscillator 1, to filter one, then to FXA. On FX A we put a simple delay with a healthy amount of feedback and dry/wet mix, that way we can hear a lot of delays after pressing a note. Then we put a distortion on the aux tab, send all the way at 0.00dB and really crank up the drive on the distortion. By pressing a note, we first hear a distorted sinewave, but the delays that follow are not distorted. Which basically means, the aux does not process the output of the FX tabs. For this case in drum synthesis it works well, but it would be really nice if there was an option included in pigments where we could set the input of the aux tab from the output of the FX tabs. Maybe they will add that in the future? Hope that helps!

@@jonaudio Oh wow that's not how I would have expected things to work at all! So that "glue" compression and distortion is being applied to the dry signals and is running in parallel with FXA and FXB. I agree that more routing options would be a nice addition but obviously there's some great ways to utilize the current routing!
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Жыл бұрын
Yep that's right. It can be useful in lots of cases, depending on the patch, but if they added those additional routing options it would open up the synth to so many more possibilities. Another thing I really wish they would add, is the option to send each engine to a direct out, like how we can send the sub oscillator in the utility engine to a direct out.

My kick sound does not sound the same, cant get the exact value precisely on the wheel like you've mentioned

Drum synthesis is tricky in the sense that, the smallest change in values can really give a different result. In this situation it's very useful to use the right click button on the mouse and adjust values that way, especially on the envelopes. What you could do is download the patch and open it in another instance of pigments and go through each value and see which value could be different. It's tedious but a great way to learn.

This is a noob question, but why 49? Why G? Does that mean that when I press C on my keyboard, that it’s going to sound like a G? If so, wouldn’t C make more sense. I’ve had Ableton for 10 years, and I should know this shiz, but to be honest, I’ve used nothing but presets and samples for 9 of the 10 years that I’ve had Ableton. I mean, yes, I’ve made a few sounds in Operator lol and done numerous other stuff. But as far as making my own sounds in Wavetable synths, I’ve only been doing that for like 2 weeks lol. I’ve owned Serum forever and have embarrassingly used only presets from Cymatics and Splice and BPM until a couple weeks ago. And I’ve only had Pigments for about 6 days haha. I’m loving it. I just feel overwhelmed honestly. I love making my own sounds though now that I’ve started. Anyway, sorry to ramble. I love ur vids! Very informative. But can u answer my question about making the tone a G? Ty. And thanks for these great tutorials!

thanks man!! and congrats on picking up pigments!!! So to answer your question. I personally like the sound of kick drums where their fundamental sits around 48-50Hz. To me I think it sounds best because it really gives that low end thump. There are def people out there who will tune their kicks to the key of their song, and if that works out for them, then great. I don't really like doing that for my stuff as I just think the 48-50 range sounds best. Luckily in pigments you can set your fundamental to anything that you like, I would absolutely suggest to try different fundamental frequencies for the kick and see what you like best.
