In this video Anthony shares how to make any imaginable kick drum sound on his Tonus Arp 2600.
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Thing is he’s literally sitting there explaining every minute detail and nuance of the synthesizers frequencies to create those sounds. That is the sign of a true Grand Master. These wanna be’s and rookies just play sounds and move sliders without really understanding the process but will talk as though they really know what they’re doing. This man understands the science of sound design and how to precisely get what he needs out of a synthesizer. That’s the difference in skill level when you’re watching a seasoned veteran that isn’t just pushing sliders and twisting knobs but moving them for a specific reason. I wish I could one day have such an ability but I myself am just a slider pusher.

It's not that hard to understand the whole circuit and the techincalities and frequencys in the 2600. Actually. What Anthony has is ears and experience.

Those were the cleanest kicks I’ve heard. You should make a sample pack of processed kicks mixed through all that gear you have. I would definitely buy it and have it in my top sample packs

There are a lot of really talented young people out there. But tbh can’t have the experience of this man. Not saying they don’t have any experience..some people are just naturally gifted and have the knack like natural born talent..so they got a head start to begin with, but when it comes to the wisdom of musical arrangement when you clearly started with the gift…I mean decades of musical wisdom you can’t beat it.. no pun haha😅 I don’t think even naturally gifted people can naturally know everything, I think there are certain things you can only learn by experimentation and working with music for a long time.

Nice to see the ARP making kick sounds. Vince Clarke also used to create his own kicks with the System 700. You can get a more personal sound creating your own sounds rather than using stock library samples.

I have been taking a digital sound synthesis class at my college and your channel has been a huge help understanding the practical applications and practices on hardware. I use VCV Rack for everything I do right now, but I would love a classic analog synth at some point.

I use hardware synths and already know how to synthesize drum sounds, but this quick demo was right up my alley, especially in terms of concise communication to someone who isn't a beginner. I've been doing this to create samples with all of my synths lately and it's super fun. It has shown me how some synths are harder to get certain drum sounds on. After watching this I think I'm going to revisit the Arp Odyssey! Thanks again.

It also helps if your synths envelope generator is not sluggish in the attack. Preferably an envelope generator with an exponential slope and not linear (meaning the attack will initially raise much quicker). FM and ring modulation can also be beneficial for drums sounds in general (more for the sounds with more high frequency content in them).

I'm incredibly thankful for your guide to Kicks here. I'm trying to design a way to make kicks through synthesis within my DAW and a lot of people just push specific software to make basic kicks. What I want to do Is edit these core values on the fly with automation within the DAW and this was the deep knowledge that I needed to get me on designing it. Thank you.

Great video! When making kicks on 2600 style synths I'm generally running the kick into the pre-amp prior to the output mixer for extra saturation. Audio-rate mod of the filter can add some spice to these type of sounds as well.

This technique can be applied to things in Ableton or even to samples on something like Digitakt; its really about applying the envelope to a sound source. For Ableton, consider doing exactly this same technique with a raw square or triangle with an envelope. I'm mostly using a Moog DFAM but this also still applies to add even more crazy to it.

This is great! Gonna try it on my ARP2600 tonight! I remember Giorgio Moroder saying he couldn't get a good kick drum from his Moog/ARP when making I Feel Love so he used a real drummer for that back in the day... so it's somewhat surprising how quick you were able to dial it in! Nice job... love it. Would also be interesting to hear how you go about snares...

The other problem was that this synth doesn’t modulate the pitch with the envelope, so I tricked it by using a sawtooth wave on the LFO modulating the pitch, it does the trick (as limited as it is, you gotta set the release of the sound to match the end of the descending saw LFO but anyway.) thanks again!!!

When you listen at the set of drum samples available in Ableton, you can definitely tell that some where generated by this method. This method is pretty cool, because you can customize your drums to your style of music =)

Ive been experimenting like this and was quite pleased with myself when I got a low conga pitched an octave down then pitch bent down quickly after the initial attack on my RX7 to get a kick drum that’s punchier than the actual kick sounds so it almost sounds like an 909

This was cool! Made me realize I had been wrongfully neglecting my virtual 2600. Fun instrument! I guess it'll take some practice to find the sweet spots for the sliders, though. My kicks didn't sound nearly as punchy and meaty as Anthony's.

What i love about modern software is that you can zoom in on the wave file and just normalise the attack of the kickdrum however you'd like, no need for compression or limiting or transient designers, when you can control it yourself exactly how you want! The impact of a kickdrum is very important, and the duration of the highend energy aswell! Bad Kicksamples tend to have less highend duration. Cause that's what cuts tru the mix in the end "the noise" on the top of the oumph. You need at least 15milliseconds of noise highend layered into your lowend sample. If we are talking a modern kickdrum sound, that is! Experimenting with sharp high-hat sounds, or long reverb tails or equed white-noise reverb tails is a good place to start, and using a spectrum analyzer is a must to study the curve of good samples! It's actually quite funny creating your own kicksamples from scratch once you start doing it. I was obsessed some years ago! VST BazzISM is greate for that lowend fundamental!
