This beautiful synth has transformed my life when it comes to sound design. I completely get you on the therapeutic side of this beautiful machine. This is a piece I made with just the polybrute with three layers/tracks. It’s so subtle in the timbre, it is as close to an acoustic instrument to any ice played before. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9d_isd5tMDcdmg.html

Sure, the PB doesn‘t replace the M12 1 by 1, but it is similarly complex in its modular approach. After all, it‘s a matter of real estate; I‘ll have to swap out one of my synths for the PB anyway (MxB and Rev2 looking anxious).

I really appreciated your video because it's nice to hear a synth do different types of pads. I find it really showcases the "Sonic Beauty/Strength" of a synth. Of course, all synths do different things, and serve different purposes, but I always love to hear a "no tricks" pad, of which you provide many examples. My one concern - and I look forward to hearing the synth in person - is that it's a bit nasally sounding, a bit harsh, and not overly "warm," but again, I look forward to being in the room with it. It's always tough over the internet. I certainly have no issue with the sonic possibilities of the synth because it seems like a programmer's dream. But, I must say, when we had a 1982 MemMoog in the same room as the Moog One, there really was no sonic contest as far as we were all concerned (there were 10 of us). The Moog One can probably do 100x what the MemoryMoog can do, but to our ears, it just didn't sound as good - as organic, as warm, as trippy, as big, etc. I'm simply pointing out that that's why a simple pad comparison is always very helpful. The same was true in our Prophet 10 Rev 4 comparison with a freshly tuned up vintage Prophet 5 Rev 2. The Rev 4 is a Great Sounding Synth to be sure, and beautifully made, but it didn't quite measure up to the vintage Prophet 5 in our humble opinion. The Resonance on the Rev 4, when pushed, wasn't as warm and musical, and the filter didn't have the same level of detail where each move produced something magical. Thx again. Very exciting looking synth, and great vid!
@Michael_Geyre
@Michael_Geyre 3 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot for your comment first, i have to tell that, in my opinion, the moog one is definitly a bad synthesizer (well, it's so powerful that it's always possible to make good sounding sounds with it, but they completely f**ked up the filter, the synth is noisy so they added a built in noise reduction, and eventide FX sound nothing like expected ..., if you have a P5 or a memmy next to it, just to the test, take 1 vco, fully open your vcf, listen to the sound, moog one sounds very dull, not much brightness in the vco sound) i've not tried yet the new prophets, but i won't expect it to sound the same as a P5 rev2, keep in mind that, if they've included (apparently) the same filters, well, VCO were also SSM, and did not sound the same as VCO produced by later CEM chips about the polybrute, it is a VERY stable synth, as it's nearly perfectly tuned when you power it on its programmable matrix modulation is very powerful, so i've recreated instability "artificially", to my ears, the result is pretty convincing some of my sounds were created based on some old venerables instruments that i happen to have in my studio (such as Matrix 12, Cs80, Jp8, and more) i was really amazed how close to these instruments the polybrute could sound in most cases ok, not 100% identical, all synths have their personnality, but most of the time, i'd say, it'd be pretty difficult to recognize who's who in a mix when i wanted to replicate a feature, who was missing, i often found another way to mimic the reaction, and get very similar results ... it's not a perfect synth, no synth is perfect, but it's very powerful/versatile/good sounding give it a try when trying it, if you feel the sound being a bit "harsh", then, use ladder filter instead of steiner, and also, do not push to high vco levels in the mixer
@Pacer416
@Pacer416 3 жыл бұрын
@@Michael_Geyre Thx Michael! I really appreciate your thorough response. I do have a PolyBrute on order. I should receive it in April, and your vid has certainly gotten me more excited. Given your synth collection, I know you'd agree that the last thing we want is for two synths to "sound the same." Otherwise, why would we need another synth? An OBX, a MemMoog and a CS80 all sound completely different, but they all sound Amazing in their own right. I guess that's what I'm hoping for out of the Polybrute. That it sounds different, but equally amazing. : ) That it sounds as beautiful/full/lush as an OBX, but with the modulation capabilities of a modern synth - and the Polybrute clearly excels here because of its innovative mod matrix. It's Great advice to remind anyone (incl me) to turn down the Osc's in the Mix Section. It's a bit disappointing to hear that you have to "artificially" create instability. I've never quite fig'd out why they need to make the osc's so stable these daze - maybe to handle the massive amount of mod capability. I'm assuming if you start out unstable, by the time the mods are finished, it'll be a train wreck, but maybe it just has to do with modern chips. I have no idea. But, my one ask is always the same, start out with a sonic masterpiece, and then work backwards and add in all the features. They Hydrasynth is another. A programming masterpiece, and a masterful synth in SO many ways. It sounds really, really good, but still not quite as good as a Prophet VS - in a basic pad competition anyway. I'm hoping one day they'll achieve both - great sound and great mod capability. Sounds like the Polybrute gets close. I'm excited to see. The UDO Super 6 also seems to offer both great sonics in a flex synth - but clearly not as flex as the Polybrute.

@@Pacer416 it's a choice in their design to have very stable vco (they're linear), to me, it's a good point (the matrixbrute, that i like too, needed quite a long time before being in tune) about the vco volume in the mixer, i often heard people telling "minibrute has an agressive sound, i dislike it", in my opinion, it can sounds very soft too, with low volume vco (but it's the same with any synths) mod matrix is really fantastic, consider that you can modulate a modulation point (as example, you have a lfo modulation a vcf, you can modulate the modulation range with another source, such as keyboard) i used that trick on a lot of patches (when you reach a sound that you like, but you're not 100% happy with it, well, tweaking small details helps reaching the 100% satisfaction ;) ) you mention the prophet VS, i tried to replicate its strings patch in my "dagashiya" patch, of course, for many reasons, they don't sound identical (4 digital aliased oscillators vs 2 analog), but to my ears, the result is pretty appealing (i also tried to mimic the VS vocal patch, you can reach by playing dagashiya, and touch morphee on the right - Up/right, once again, it's not identical, but it reminds me that preset) about the hydrasynth, Matt Pike made some presets for that instrument (and also did some fantastic ones on the polybrute)

@Pacer416
@Pacer416 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielcolfer4671 HI Daniel, You are right, but I do believe this is becoming a bit of "an excuse." Yes, they sound slightly different, but they don't sound THAT different. Where the Vintage Prophet 5 Rev 2 significantly outperformed the P10 IMHO was in the filter section. The new one just didn't have the incredible nuances of the original. I'm not sure that would change from vintage p5 to vintage p5 assuming (of course) that they were in reasonable condition. Like I said, the P10 is a great instrument, it just sounds more different to the original (at least the Rev 2 I tested) than one is able to hear online. The P10 sounds thick, full and organic - and the keyboard is significantly better. It was just a few notches short of the original for me sonically speaking, and the other person in the room agreed with me. Remember too, the original has analog LFO's and analog envelopes. They're not as tight as the digital ones used in the new one so the vintage P5 moves more/more organic, and even if you turn the "Vintage Knob" on the new one, it doesn't necessarily get "more organic sounding," it gets "more sloppy sounding" if you know what I mean.

I made an ondes martenot preset using the ribbon AND Z axis on morphee (to simulate ondes touch) It was pretty convincing, but: - Arturia told me they did not want a preset with no sound while playing the keyboard (even if I named it "push Z") - the prototype I've been using had an early ribbon design, that was not working properly (that's why I don't use it much on the video, except for few non precise fx), so i did not feel making a demo of such a sound in these conditions...

Hey great job amazing instrument. Question for anyone though with synths I use software mostly now but need a real synth. Can I connect this to my DAW and have 1 sound on one track, and another sound play back from track 2 and so on? Not sure if it's possible with real analog or do I have to record every track as mixdown to audio to playback multiple patches on different tracks?
@Michael_Geyre
@Michael_Geyre 3 жыл бұрын
Since it's possible to split the keyboard, you can have 2 sounds on 2 different tracks, but, I highly recommend to record each track you need as audio track (you can keep the midi track and save the preset, so you can record again if needed) Also, keep in mind this synth is only 6 voices polyphonic

Thanks No, I did not intend to reproduce geneviev patch (that I live too) with multi path Actually, it was a test patch to make multi morphings (the usual morph function + programmed additional morphs using the matrix mod, controlled by mod wheel) But, as a test, just for myself, I could recreate geneviv patch on the polybrute (but did not put it in my presets)

Wow deep and complex sounds. It looks like a deep dive synth. And the core sound is good!!! Did you use some "dsi vintage knob" voice drifting in the mod matrix? Can you treat the envelopes per voice?
@Michael_Geyre
@Michael_Geyre 3 жыл бұрын
thanks :) "dis vintage knob", well, yes and no the polybrute is a very stable and precise instrument (maybe due to its linear vco ?), to make them more "alive", there is a "detune" source in the modulation matrix, that lets you generate a sort of "randomizer" that can be used various ways (as example, i used this feature to make my thx sound patch) it can be used also to make a sort of voice pan, that can recalls oberheim polysynths so, i often used that detune feature to generate unstability in vco tuning, but, modulation depth was itself often modulated by keyboard, in order to have less modulation on higher notes (otherwise, it'd sound completely out of tune) i really love to have access to such tricks

Help me out here. I want a Polybrute, a sequential prophet x, or a kronos. A bunch of very different beasts. leaning real hard into the poly as the sound and expressivity are incredibly tempting. i'm sure youtube compression isn't helping make the choice easier either. 6 voices feels cramped but i love a well thought out mod matrix and i love versatility but digital just doesn't feel the same. also the quirky limitations some of these hybrids have is a little lame. Looking at you prophet. What do you guys think? Can you sell me on one of these? I might pick up a matrix brute in the future but i have a ton of accumulated mono's.
@Michael_Geyre
@Michael_Geyre 2 жыл бұрын
hard to answer as they're all very different beasts i've not used the prophet X during a long period, so i can't say (some love it, some others don't) i have a kronos and know the polybrute really well do you want to have only synth type sounds ? or would you like to have a workstation that can read samples, have a multitracks sequencer ? despite it's a complexe instrument, polybrute is pretty quick to program when you know it well, kronos is a pain to use VA part sounds bad (in my opinion), i have much better results by sampling synths and reprogramming using kronos features (i'm preparing various banks who'll be for sale, someday ...) in the other hand, polybrute is a very versatile instrument, and can sounds (more or less) close to many other analog synths i believe prophet X would let you use your own samples and tweak them with its synthesis so, my best advice is, think about what kind of instrument you'd need, listen to demos, test the instruments if you can in the worst case, you could always sell the instrument to buy another one, if you're disappointed with it good luck

Damn...I was already leaning towards this over a Moog One, but given this video and the fact I can buy 3 of these for about the same price, well, I'm leaning even harder towards a Polybrute. And the Arturia Minibrute I just sold for 200 euros will offset the Polybrute price!! Sort of...a bit...not much...not really... And though it's already been said, excellent job with the playing...very cinematic, melodic, and a great demo of what the synth can produce.

Thanks for your kind message to be honest, i really disliked the moog one (in my opinion, despite it's a very powerful instrument, it does not sound that good, especially about filter and FX, can you imagine that ?? a bad sounding moog filter and bad sounding eventide FX in the same instrument ... what a curse ...) i had next to it several other instruments (both classics and news synths), even raw waveforms had nothing common ... for the same price, you could get a quantum + polybrute and keep some money for an hydrasynth ? really, non sense anyway, have fun with the synth you're going to buy ;)
