Point he's making is about lack of goodwill between state and central governments. There are instances where the central government has been able to secure cooperation from various state governments regardless of party in government in the state. But in this marquee project of the central government, the government is more than happy to push the narrative of MH government holding the project for ransom but the fact is that acquisition didn't happen even during the NDA government in MH. So there is, if I feel, lack of conviction about the project on the part of the central government.

It's all about will nothing matter what problems are. If the BJP can't sit with shiv sena and don't want to sort out their political differences. That's shows BJP priorities towards infrastructure Western peripheral highway messed up in political game but gadkari sort out because he had a will. BJP just want to take full credit of work and blame others for incompetent. It's like my way or highway but in real world it's doesn't happen like that specially in india where federalism structure is there. You need to do things collectively not exclusively.

Economics without politics, is numbers without essence; politics without economics is poverty of mind and matter. Polical Economy used to be the standard before mid-last 20th century. Separating the two causes a tendency to fix the 'frame of reference' on a limited area and can cause illusions and sometimes even delusions.

yeah, economics and politics are intertwined without a doubt but the problem occurs when economists become political. The one thing politics does to people is snatch away the objectivity which is really detrimental to any academic field that is very much needed to be objective.

The time this was being uploaded, the talk involving about India's majoritarianism was being discussed, large scale attack on property, murder and rape were taking place against the minority Hindu community was taking place in neighbouring Bangladesh, incited by the majority radical islamist community there. Its been covered by the international media including new york times and gurdian but I am yet to see any discussion on "Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs"'s youtube channel on that! Any discussion about the situation in Bangladesh given their own opinion that politics and economy is intertwined! We cannot objectively discuss about majoritarian tendency without looking at South Asia as a whole. Its a point completely missed in the discussion, I feel.

When Raghuram Rajan cricises, he won't say that HSR (Bullet Train) is delayed because Maharashtra Govt has completely blocked it. Gujarat part is on track but SS-NCP-Cong Govt in Maharashtra, going to the extent that Thane municipality also has blocked the project. Similarly, when he praises the Jan Dhan-Aadhar-Mobile (JAM), he doesn't point out who pushed the whole Aadhar universalisation and who were the people going to Supreme Court to oppose it. So he can't acknowledge that what he says are the right things are pushed by Modi, and the people he has aligned with politically are those who have blocked each of these.

This modi/rahul/(insert you fav politician here) fascination will lead us nowhere. The point is that all Governments work with several constraints, including unwilling allies (left in UPA 1), loud opposition etc. One of the principal responsibilities of any party in power is to establish a functional relationship with the opposition. So if the Govt. today faces intractable opposition from some quarters, then it should consider how it treats opposition CMs, parties too.

@@ahamasmiarinm Two observations on your reply: 1. Yes - the people are to blame too - but you seem to want to give a pass to the corrupt leaders (both bjp & Cong and others) 2. Nowhere did I state that bjp is the only party that does 'dirty politics' - all of them do; in fact - it's you who's being hypocritical by essentially stating "well, everyone else is corrupt, so it's ok for bjp to be corrupt too" The question is: are you willing to accept that modi/shah are also corrupt, just like the Gandhis and the others? Or, are your loyalties so blind like the rest of the modi-bhakts?
@ahamasmiarinm
@ahamasmiarinm 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogervega9846 Dude, don't try to hide your prejudice behind fake neutrality. I said nobody is saint, that doesn't mean I equated Gandhis and BJP. As a matter of fact, no sensible person can do so when the Gandhis are actually out on bail. So, stop drawing false parallels, it reflects dishonesty on your part. So, in conclusion, NaMo/Shah is no saint, but one can't draw a parallel between them and the Gandhis when it comes to corruption. Gandhis are way more skilful in that regard. Regarding your comment on blame game, politics and politician are to blame for sure, but Indic culture always tells to look at one's fault first and only then point fingers at others. If you believe in Indic culture, you should have no problems with that. Same on your question on loyalty, fix your own first before you question mine. You have no idea what I am, what I do and what I have done for the country, so better build some of your own credibility before you ask about others, else it would be embarrassing only to you if asked about it.

Indeed, not enough is being talked about the pakistan and especially bangladesh's quite decimation of minority, Hindus in general. On the other hand I see "Bangladesh's success story" is being talked about. If you have to talk about majoritarianism, I think you cannot ignore pakistan and bangladesh and talk about India alone. Arvind Subramaniam's views on government policy in the future prospects of the Indian economy were both balanced and critical at the same time. Raghuram Rajan, on the other hand, missed the primary point of the discussion, and I believe he should prepare before attending a presentation so that he does not overshadow himself. I profoundly disagree with him on so many levels as an informed Indian citizen. By engaging in single-minded politics, he has completely missed the essence of the conversation. Because of some political predisposition, he certainly overlooks all of India's economic achievements. The main principles that I have the most difficulty understanding are that the majoritarian government has neither aim or desire to enhance the Indian economy, nor does it feel compelled to do so. As far as I recall, this government has set one of the most ambitious goals or targets for the Indian economy, such as a five-trillion-dollar GDP or a hundred-billion-dollar FDI investment target, among other things. He is not anticipated or desired to have such a biassed and one-sided opinion without facts. P.S. While I agree with him on certain aspects, I believe that failing to reflect the entire point of view is a major no-no.

I am really disappointed by Raghuram Rajan's lack of objectivity. At one point it seemed it was reeking of political netagiri, like a particular divisive speech in a political rally. I think this type of turn in academic discussions lowers the trust of the common people on academia itself. I fear that people will hear this discussion(freely available on public forum) and think, "okay even in academic discussions, I cant escape party's political narrative. Because Raghuram was the rbi governor on congress era and was denied extention by the bjp govt, his discussion will lose objectivity and will be self contradictory in an international forum" It was dirty I feel. The chair also had a predetermined agenda which was headed by Ashutosh Varshney, the political science professor. The reason to believe that is the questions by the students also towed the same line, which point to the fact that the direction was set ab initio.

Raghuram Rajan's politicization of the otherwise an economic conversation troubles me. If Einstein, after a laborious day at physics lab, sat down with a drink and opined on the philosophy of God, metaphysics and such, his views should not be considered to be of a highly skilled philosopher. He will remain an amateur philosopher but a stalwart in physics. So, similarly, Raghuram Rajan's political science degree is a must before his views on politics should be even remotely heeded. @@indusanon33 There was no equation of that sort. The second last line was precisely to convey that. I'll repeat not because you are a half wit but because I am a good teacher. But because all of this is hyper specialized, his ideas on things other than economics (like politics) are NOT of the same standard as those on economics. I do get your hyper specialization context but point to note is after a certain hierarchical level within any organisation , such specializations cease to exist and the person has to leave the confines of their own academic training towards a more holistic understanding of an issue - which is precisely what Raghu is doing.
@JD-rd4pk
@JD-rd4pk 2 жыл бұрын
@@indusanon33 That is one way of how things could be. What you are now seeking to define is the role of a RBI Governor across domains - this is by ripple effect of economic policy of RBI, not by constitutional design. RBI is a huge office. And an important one. The Governor's role remains largely political. It is more so the Chief Economic Advisor who chips in to bring to notice the economic side of things on other matters. RBI Governor's role is very well defined and a lot of it could be carried out without meeting any politician not in power. In fact, I do not reckon a need to meet anyone beyond FM and PM. Chief Economic Advisor's Office is a different thing wherein still only key ministers would be required to consult with. An interdisciplinary decision comes out of a congregation of experts from a variety of domains do not necessarily need an interdisciplinary person. The economics expert might give a value based on maximizing economic output. To which the Minorities Affairs expert might highlight socio-political impact of that value and hence, suggest values that maximize welfare at the cost of economic output. This negotiation and back and forth does not make either a reliable source of the other person's domain. So, Raghu is simply off the rocker. He has neither experience nor qualification to discuss anything politically. Maybe the employee benefits but seeing him in Chicago does not seem to paint an unfavorable picture of the benefits.

RR is a jilted man. He was a Finance Minister in waiting in 2019 and since his dreams got shattered he has become more of a political economist than an economist. So anything he says should be taken with a bag of salt. The troubling issues of 2A capitalism and protectionism with trade barriers may cause downfall of this government. That is a possibility. The government also knows (hopefully) that if they dont deliver on growth in 2022/2023 they are staring at a big defeat. I hope it will not happen and we dont go back to being ruled by dynasties where RR like people who pretend to be "Indian" come and rule and when they dont see it profitable they leave the country to be come professors of US universities. Heads they win. Tails they write papers.

The reality is that everybody has an agenda today. The agenda of RR is to blame BJP for everything to the extent of saying that majority of Indians are stupid bigots and that's why BJP is still in power. AS presents a facade of balance but he is clearly frustrated about the impact that he was able to make during his time in govt . Unfortunately because of these Agendas the discussion was disappointing in it's quality. The bigger problem that i see - Lot of these economists who have been in the US/Western systems have divided loyalties and a deep need to look good to the western lobbies. Their expertise is clear but India has to find a way to manage their divided loyalties and agendas when they are in govt.

Are you serious ? Is there anything unfactual that he told in the video? Going to western countries us disloyalty then many of the Indians who got global recognition for india is disloyal. Also before going to any other country he served as rbi governor in his home country and the economy was lot better . The western countries would not hire anybody like that with out having any credibility. The fact is people are so carried away by the propaganda of bjp right now that anybody who criticizes them becomes anti india western sympathizers. Note. I have been looking upto bjp earlier , thought it would bring good changes to indian development. But it failed. And you have to accept it.

+1 to the point Arvind mentioned around 1:19 - current Govt’s policy around majoritarian politics is not reflected when it comes to the distribution of Govt’s welfare schemes. Hindus & Muslims are benefiting alike. In fact, some independent KZfaqrs have credited this govt for taking these welfare schemes to Muslim majority pockets of population for first time that was otherwise mostly missed out by “liberal” Govts of past. The delivery of such schemes were relatively “corruption free” & efficient. This helped the govt earn some brownie points even from the corner of population who are otherwise opponent on political front. Last, it’s likely that % population from Muslim community, who benefited from Govt schemes, is statistically significant when compared to the % of population from Muslim community who faced the brunt of political majoritarianism. Overall great discussion. Hope someone in Govt listening to this. Last, I liked the point that Dr. Raghu brought out - it’s important that the criticism of Govt policies and taking interest on policy making need to get out from the elites to the commoners on Indian streets & bazaars. Thanks

Indian economy still hasn't recovered from the downfall during covid. Economy fell by 20% during covid in a quarter - it was highest fall in the world. In last 2 years our total aggregate growth comes to 0.25%. Means if our economy was at 100 rupees two years ago, you crash it to 80, and then while recovery happens you claim - look 'high growth'. And today after 2 years it is at 100 rupee 25 paise. We should have been at ~110 by now. Growth rate had come down to 3% even before corona. Eight consecutive quarters of continuous decline, every quarter growth rate fell for 2 straight years. Even Bangladesh has overtaken us by over $200 per capita.

We need to apoint Mr. Abhijit Banarjee and Mr. Raghuram Rajan, the absolute "Gods" of economics as our principal policy makers. I sincerely believe that their policies and ideas would easily propel us beyond China and US to become the largest economy in the world within 2-5 yrs. In his discussion, Professor Rajan mentioned the difficulty in acquiring land for the high speed rail project. I wish he had spoken with same candidness on the bottlenecks to reform the farm sector, when it was needed last year. Observe the stiff opposition that a powerful government has had to face to deregulate the farm sector. This is especially striking since those threatened by the proposed reform constitute a small proportion of the Indian farmers. Rather than stick his neck out at that juncture and emphasise the need for slowly weaning away subsidies, Professor Rajan recommended listening to the farmers' grievances, and shelving the reforms for forseeable future. No wonder the reform process is unsavoury, when its ardent proponents do double speak in critical moments.
