"As Tears Go By" is a song written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Marianne Faithfull recorded and released it as a single in the United Kingdom in 1964. Her song peaked at number nine on both the UK and Irish singles charts. Later, the Rolling Stones recorded their own version, which was included on the American album December's Children (And Everybody's). London Records released it as a single, which reached number six in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Heard this for the first time tonight, after the weekend that was in the United States just now. This song had an immediate effect on me. Those strings..... it just.... It just made me, stop and breathe for a moment. Breathe, clear my mind and listen. It gave me a moment, one I needed. A moment we all need every now and again.

Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, and As Tears Go By are all melancholy songs with strings so I guess they can evoke the same feeling in people. The Rolling Stones answer to The Beatles 'Yesterday '. A very beautiful song indeed & surely one of their best tunes. Similarly 'We Love You ', The Stones answer to The Beatles 'All You Need is Love ' , with John &Paul on backing vocals. Their Satanic Majesties Request ' , The Stones answer to The Beatles Sgt Peppers. A very colourful album in its own way with 'She's a Rainbow ' . The Stones answer to The Beatles 'Let it Be ' was 'Let it Bleed' , again a Rolling Stones classic. And finally Brian Jones played saxophone on The Beatles 'You Know my Name (Look up the Number). You can see Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Donovan happily joining the chorus to 'All You Need is Love ' This explains their tight closeness & as Bill Wyman said 'Obviously we were influenced. Other bands were being influenced by each other ' . An inexplicable closeness & a very personal & healthy rivalry, although The Beatles were more innovative. The kind of healthy rivalry which one rarely gets to see in today's bands.
