The heat is ready dangerous. As we get older farming will become difficult and dangerous. It is becoming more and more important to plant and harvest as early as possible.

You’re so right about this heat. I’ve already mowed most of my little acre. I always leave a little bit longer for the bunnies. My ditches are still full of water. The humidity is awful. Even with the riding mower I take my time. I don’t want to run over the baby bunnies. Please be careful with this heat.

I'm almost 67. I avoid the outdoors after 10:00 a.m. from June through August. It is indeed hotter these days and aging bodies don't cope well with it. Hang in there!

I'm 70, and I can work in the heat, but not if the sun shines on my head. I feel like a hothouse flower. Keep me in the shade with a damp towel around my neck or over my head. A breeze make all of the difference. I understand the 10AM. That may be too late some days.

I am loving the bone broth I made from the 1/2 cow we purchased for my roasts and beef meals. It was brutal yesterday. Hydration is key during these summer temps. We go out to our garden early in the morning to avoid the high heat.

I was out watering at 7:30 last night and it was still 98. I came in dripping with sweat. I decided this will be my last summer trying to garden in this TX heat. At 74 years I just can't deal with it very well. I've always been a summer person, but the kind of heat we've had the last few years in so much more intense.

We're 70 & 74 and live in Arkansas. The heat is killing us, more the sun's rays burning us. We garden, raise our beef, and have chickens. We can, dehydrate and freeze-dry anything that we get our hands on We just found that Walmart delivers to our house now. That means we're way too close to town. Now, what do we do? We're not giving up, but it's getting more difficult to keep up.

We woke up to 68 this morning. I went out and enjoyed my morning tour in the garden...and THEN in swooped the heat. It's 2:16 and we are at 101 with a heat index of 111- 38% humidity. For FL that is DRY! I could have grown wheat this year with the dry weather. But, on we go!

I’m 72 and widowed. Have been thinking lots lately on how much longer I can have a small garden and take care of the household chores on my 25 acres. Pasture is leased with cows. I do try to help out with pasture mowing when my tractor is working properly. I’ve had so many issues with it this last year and at my age I question how much to spend on it. The Texas heat is so oppressive with the extreme humidity. I’ve already lost 2 tomato plants due to the blight from excessive rains even though I sprayed organic antifungal faithfully. It’s so disheartening. Some days the heat just makes me want to throw up my hands and hollar calf rope!

For what it's worth I hope you will not allow yourself to be discouraged for long. Our bodies after all are imperfect and were not created to last forever, the changes are part of it. Maybe time to eliminate a few complications or try some new ways of doing things. Wish you all the best!

It was 100% humidity at our house this morning in NE Texas.. I was trying to mow around the raised beds, and even the mower overheats and i have to go park it in the shade. I hose down the milk cow to help cool her off. They can go get under some big shade trees but its still hot for them. I have another that will calve soon and i worry about that some in this heat.

I'm in the DFW area and I was in our backyard with my pup this morning, just watering my plants and throwing the ball for him occasionally. After about 45 min of just that very low amount of activity I was completely drenched. It's brutal here, I was not made for this humidity lol. I actually think yesterday when it was nearly 100 but dry was a lot more tolerable.

Deep South Homestead is my inspiration for growing older in the heat of the south and still working the land. Granted we kept our land forested so we’d have shade for us, the animals and to try and preserve moisture in the ground best as possible. We just worked ourselves into the landscape and only keep brush eating animals for the most part.

Your grandson is so adorable, I know he has to bring y'all such joy. He'll keep ya young. Have you ever considered getting an electric canner? As much as you can, if you could add that with no watching to your regular one, imagine what you could accomplish. You have so much on your plate that would be amazing. Just a thought. You hit the ground running in the morning, and I imagine you don't stop until you pass out.😁 Jill, I'm so dreading the heat this summer. My car a/c is needing freon. There is no way I could drive back and forth to Waxahachie for church with no air. Shoot, I couldn't probably go a mile and a half to Walmart. I'm being hit left and right with the expenses I seem to forget about. They don't usually all hit at once like now though. Freon, tires, oil change, car inspection/registration, water heater. I don't know how I'm gonna do it in this economy, but I'll just have to. I'm relying on my Savior like I always do. I just admit sometimes I worry a bit.😊 ❤❤❤

94 @ 3pm, heat index of 113 here. 🥵AC set at 80 won't cycle off now until 10-ish pm. Beautiful green beans and broth! My husband has had to work in this heat frequently, but usually off by about 3:00ish. He's proof that hourly hydration is a must & non-negotiable - adding electrolytes a time or two plus at night; frequent shade breaks, lightweight clothing to cover EVERYTHING and a proper hat and sweat band (worthy tips from our Latino brothers/sisters). Definitely not for just anyone though. Gardening likely over down this way now. Hugs to all!

Hi from Tyler, we had that storm blow in. It took out my 40 foot tree broke it off almost at the base of the tree and took out my greenhouse. No more greenhouse but at least it didn’t hit our shed. Can’t get back there yet to see if it took out our back fence we’re worried because of the dogs. We don’t want them to get out.

Got a question well a couple 1 are you using a glass top stove? To can with? I had one and hated it ever since I got it so I traded it in for an old 1987 whirlpool regular burner stove and it’s fabulous!!! But I’ve been wanting to can some meals in a jar and have read that using a glass top stove they can crack under that high temperature. And 2 how do you render your beef broth? I got beef bones when we got our last beef and want to make my own.
