Do Catholics Have to Respect Everyone?

Sometimes it can be hard to respect the character of a person you really don’t like. That’s no problem, says Fr. Mike, because you can still respect them as a human being and-if they are in a position of authority-you can still respect their position. Not everyone in our lives is going to earn the kind of respect that Fr. Mike would equate with trust. Those who have a respectable character will earn that trust though, and that’s the kind of person we should strive to be in other people’s lives.

I am converting to Catholic, but have yet to even begin RCIA. I am desperate, I am lost, and I am fumbling about trying to find my own way for now - and, coupled with other sources of divine inspiration I have found, these videos are helping me with my patience, my faith, and respect for those whom I would otherwise not respect much at all. SilverStar830 I just converted this past easter. The whole journey, I felt the same as you do now. At some point along your journey though (for me it was confession and the scrutinies) you will have a moment of such gratitude and clarity in such a divine way that can’t even be described. Keep questioning, researching, and opening yourself up to let God in. Congrats on converting 😊

This is really well thought out. I’ve struggled with some people I need to respect, asking me to be a part of things I’m opposed to, and it’s hard to know the best way to say no. I’m Protestant but I’m finding more informative teaching here ...

I feel the same as you do. It's really hard to say "no" sometimes. Example...…..Asked to donate time and money to a certain charity that is not doing the right thing with funds. When I say "no I would rather be part of that project for personal reasons", people have a hard time respecting my reasoning.

@@BeatKiller81 I mean, that's wrong and intentionally uncharitable to others. Otherwise Jesus wouldn't have declared Himself to be The Way, the Truth, and the Light. That negates any religion not following Christ in at least some way, then the epistles dictate in which way He is to be followed to obtain and keep salvation. Anything outside that is damned.

I think that this is accurate. Respect doesnt equal letting people abuse their positions! Its similar to love. Love everyone for the sake of their humanity, but love also means correcting when they are doing something wrong, love is also the parent setting up rules and boundaries, and disciplining when those boundries are crossed. Its out of love and guidence, not anger

Layla Li Yea no, that's not the case at all. Its not about being holier then thou when i disagree with someone. Lets say i have a friend who exhibits a biased attitude towards others. What would be more loving, letting them be, giving up hope, or try to talk to them from a place of help? What about a friend that recently got into drugs, would it be loving to coddle them and let them get deeper into drugs instead of doing what ever i could to get them out of it. If you think love is willingly letting your loved ones fall instead of helping correct them YOU are the one who doesn't understand love. I want whats best for my loved ones, i want them to have a good life. And it isnt one sided. In areas im wrong i want them to correct me. I want my loved ones to help me not enable me. Im not talking about little things and putting off that im better then them. Im not talking about judging another mother because she didnt Cosleep and i did. I understand every one is doing what they think is best, and its only when its obviously wrong that i try to interject at all.

Father, you're videos are inspiring and thank you for your ministry. I will pray for you and your ministry. Having said that, and this is a little off topic, lately I feel like the Church is in a "tug-of-war", so to speak, with the current culture. Almost as if there is a game of one-upmanship between the two camps about what is ethical, acceptable, moral and "tolerant". I feel as if there are times when the Church tries to pander to changing cultural norms and has been leaning more "liberal" in order to gain "acceptance" among the non-Christian crowds. I think, more than ever, the Church needs to stand its ground, the clergy must not "bend the truth" in order to gain acceptance and the laity should be more bold in proclaiming the Gospel when confronted with teachings that are directly in contradiction to Church dogma. Tolerance and respect are different from truth and love. As telling the truth is both hurtful and loving; and loving someone, will at times, require admonition for their wrongful deeds.

I think what you're talking about came in the 1950s and really picked up steam in the 1960s. There are holdovers, but there is also a return to orthodoxy in places (like my diocese). At the same time, we're not talking about a false nostalgic orthodoxy -- we're not wooden saints. Our holiness is in living in our time, holding to the truth of the Faith in the culture we're in, not in an imagined past. We can't blame other people if we're not holy.

@@kimfleury I like what you said about 'being holy in our time' and it's hard to imagine what the past was like but the Truth never changes. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He doesn't "change with the times." He IS the God of Abraham, of Jacob, and of Moses. He IS the Living God. I'm not trying to blame others for "not being holy," I'm simply saying that we should be steadfast in the Truth. We shouldn't have to walk on eggshells all day long, in order to avoid being "intolerant" toward people who choose not to believe in the Gospel. When the Truth "hurts" you're serving God; when word play is used to attempt to present the Truth in a "more polite" manner you're doing a disservice to you're neighbor and the Church.

Many of the bishops and cardenals are befriending the world being nice and tolerant of sin. Sin can not be tolerated because of this tolerant policy churches are loosing their right of liberty of cult avoiding court fights in this point means that precedents are being stablished and very soon the truth of sin will the impossible to be predicated.

You hit the nail on the head Fr Mike, often people throw away the baby with the bath water - I always try to remember no one is perfect but this doesn’t mean they have nothing valuable to offer. God doesn’t make junk. I really like the way you broke it down to 3 example. Very easy to remember - thank you!!!

I love the way you framed this topic. Somewhere along the way we have confused these common society understandings with a choice. I think you frame this so that people can understand that how we treat people shouldn't be according to our feelings at the time except in the case of earned trust. What great wisdom here! Discernment is so necessary when it comes to respect, because how we respect a person is linked to how vulnerable we make ourselves to them. I wish I had had better training in this when I was younger, but thankfully, God is a God of restoration!

Bud Askins actually the church encourages people to respect themselves and all life. I trust in going to confession to receive God’s mercy because I know I am sinful. I know when I do something that is wrong, but God always forgives if you just ask.

Yes Father. I agree with you. We should still respect others although we don't have to agree. Respect them regardless if they don't deserve it but because one should be respectful of other human beings. They too were created in the image and likeness of God. They too can repent and be forgiven!

Everyone deserves respect. The respect that he is talking about is popularity. To me popularity deserves less respect because it goes to the head of people and they get out of control. People are deluded by popularity, popularity does not take more effort, it takes less. Popular people are narssissitic, and deserve less respect. If you respect people who are not interested, the energy is lost.

I could never reconcile the fact we are called to respect our elders whenever they were talking or acting in a manner not deserving of respect, but I really appreciate the way you broke the topic down and addressed forms of respect point by point. Now I'm in the process of of trying to build a relationship with God & learn more about our church. I love your positive energy, & your love for God, It exudes from you. You truly have a gift for making the teachings from the bible & the church relatable & easy to understand. You have a nice way of saying the "Hard or difficult" things people need to hear. My thoughts after listening....maybe I don't have to respect on the 3rd level but I do have to love. This can be kind of tricky. I think the first level of respect lays down a great baseline for love though. It also came to mind that God always respects our freedom, even when we choose everything but Him. He does this because he desires our friendship and we must help draw others to that friendship as well - praying and sacrificing for them out of respect for what God is calling them to, out of the person God is calling them to be. Excellent video. Yeah, giving respect doesn't mean you approve of everything that one does, especially if they're a horrible person. Heck, you might not have the best neighbor, but they're still a human being.

Everyone experiences the difficulty of dealing with negative people that we do not respect. What is more than their difficult behavior is to find out why they act the way they do, it usually stems from hurt in their past, and they never had the clergy or parents or teachers to help them understand why they are difficult and invest in them to bring their behavior to one that is more conducive for society. Once they understand the transformation in which you helped to achieve, all difficulty will go away and you will have a foundation of respect and loyalty that will spread beyond the person you helped.

This is what we should do in times of crisis in the Church is to Trust and Obey and serve only Him. Very true. And I would argue that respect for the Authority trumps respect for the Character: for example correcting or protesting the actions of some leader. Seriously, we can't remain silent on certain issues. Even though we respect the office, we need to voice our disapproval for the actions of certain characters and demand action.

I just saw you on History's THE LAST POPE program and decided to check this out. I must say you are a very captivating and very good teacher who presents your teachings in a very easy to understand and accessible way. Your talk on respect is very much needed in these turbulent times I think. I think the greatest example of respecting the office rather than the person in that authority is best exemplified by the current US president. I have a great respect for the Office of the President and what it can represent but we all know these are fallible people. Mr. Trump may be the worst out of the lot but that doesn't mean that respect for the office should be thrown away as well. Anywho, while my comment wasn't overly theological it is a good "real world" application of what you spoke of. I will continue to look in on your videos from time to time.

I am late to this video, but I couldn't agree more with what you have said. I have long-since identified and distinguished between those three types of respect. I recall when teaching that we were told, on a training course, that teachers had to earn the respect of pupils, I stood up and said that was far too simplistic and even dangerous and explained why. It didn't go down well with the senior management. 😏 And, yes, it is a framework on how we respond to a person in a position of responsibility or authority who has many failings. And the same framework informs and guides how we treat even those who have comitted the most heinous sinds and crimes; they are still human and still a child of God, no matter how fallen.

While this video predates the recent revelation of the same scandals it was still timely. I really respect Fr. Mike (positionally and in what I know about his demeanor in his videos). Thanks for sharing this insight and understanding on the different types of respect. Respect does not mean you condone a person's poor behavior or bad character--important distinction made in this video. Bravo!

Remember his disclaimer at the beginning of the video. It was NOT produced in response to the current news so this is NOT in reference to those who abused others. We can apply what he said though. While we do not respect the horrible people who did horrible things to others and abused their position--we still respect the office. They get removed from that position that they have abused (finally) and, hopefully, someone who has a character we can respect will fill that office that we respect. I was not bashing Fr. Mike. I think he is one of the good guys!!

Thank you Father. This was a great video. I have a question about respect that must be given during times of extreme unrest (whether they appear that way or not, of course). For instance, were the founding fathers of the U.S. acting in a sinful way when they declared independence from the British crown? At what point can someone consider a position of authority null or the actual position itself immoral. Must someone respect the seat of the Chancellor of the German Reich or Premier of the Soviet Union or Prime Minister of Cambodia circa 1970's? These are the questions that I keep coming back to in terms of authority and respect. In many cases even speaking out against those positions could land you and your whole family in Gulag. Thanks for taking the time to read, and I'm very interested in your thoughts. Your videos are always awesome.

Everyone except first acquaintances who greet you without taking their hat off or wear hats in your home. Those people need to be respected from across the globe.

I respect the priest in my parish . I feel so comfortable when I go to him for confession and I do not close the curtain it's face to make it like a Personal when I'm talking to him .

Great video Father Mike! Could you and/or ascension presents team put together a video addressing people who are “spiritual and not religious” or would say “well that’s your belief” if proposed with the faith? I find there’s a good amount of people in today’s culture who love spirituality but refuse to accept religion or see how they’re connected. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thank you and God bless!
