Convert 30fps video to 24fps with Optical Flow and Speed Warp motion estimation in Davinci Resolve

A technique I use in Davinci Resolve in order to conform 30fps footage to cinematic 24fps edits. 30fps source footage is typically useful for a corporate client, but I can also convert it to 24fps for cinematic edits, using optical flow retiming and speed warp motion estimation. These are features that are built into Davinci Resolve Studio version. They are CPU and GPU intensive effects, so processing takes some time. This technique is useful when taking higher frame rate source footage and converting down to 24fps. Reducing your frame rate from 30fps to 24fps actually reduces your shutter angle by roughly 20%. So, I also show the ReelSmart Motion Blur plugin that analyzes movement between frames and is useful to bring back the motion blur and blur out most artifacts that occur when using the motion estimated retiming features in Davinci Resolve. The ReelSmart Motion Blur plug-in produces slightly more accurate results compared to Resolve's built in motion estimated motion blur. Also, on a side note that is still related to this, it is generally not a good idea to use ND filters on GoPro cameras in a situation where the camera's stabilization will be needed heavily. GoPro cameras use electronic / digital stabilization, so a lower shutter speed can show the digital stabilized movement of the video between frames baked into the motion blur. Motion estimated motion blur helps to add motion blur (simulating an ND filter) without showing stabilization artifacts. Shooting at 30fps, then converting to 24fps using this method also gives the motion blur algorithm more information to work with, so I have gravitated towards it even though it isn't very practical due to how demanding it is to process. However, it gives me the versatility and results that I'm looking for :)

Where the rest get it wrong and talk about slow motion, you got it right and explained beautifully how to properly edit footage of various fps on a 24p timeline.

So the others aren't getting it wrong tho. Some film in 30fps and drop it into a 24fps timeline to slow it down. This tutorial just explains how to drop a 30fps clip into a 24fps timeline and play it at normal speed, right? Or am I misunderstanding? He did say he was creating frames tho which is strange because he'd actually dropping frames and blending if he was trying to play at 1x speed. Hmmm. I'm not sure now.

@@SDScuba Just so it makes more sense to you, the Speed Warp combined with Optical Flow algorithm attempts to imagine frames that don't exist (in between frames), meaning in theory, a good 30fps to 24fps conversion. It is limited though, drone footage tends to work well but don't expect to use something like this on say a short film or something. Yes, I stated in the beginning of the tutorial that slowing down from 30 to 24 is a valid technique but is not always the end goal if you are trying to replicate the same real life speed of the original video. This method preserves the real life speed of the original video. Also, there are even more advanced methods, such as the Chronos model in Video Enhance AI which uses a more modern approach to achieving the same effect with even more success :)

Lol I get it! I have several Noctua 3000 RPM industrial quality case fans in my computer. I raised their speed curves in the BIOS to prioritize better cooling despite the increased noise. I was editing a short film at someone's house one time and they thought I was playing Flight Simulator 2020, they could hear the computer from downstairs lol. I use headphones, the sound doesn't bother me. I'm using an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 128 GB of RAM and an RTX 3070. I'll upgrade to the RTX 3090 next year in order to do more with my next major video. Last night I was rendering DNxHR proxies in Davinci Resolve, using GoPro Player to convert GoPro MAX footage to 5.6K CineForm, and upscaling DJI Air 2S footage from 5.4K to 10.8K with the Proteus machine learning upscaling model in Topaz Video Enhance AI, all at the same time. The computer was using about 40 GB of RAM. Being able to do everything at the same time, saves me a lot of time. It also has 100 usable terabytes of storage (8x Western Digital Gold 14TB hard drives), all in the Fractal Design Meshify 2 case which has a storage mode that allows for way more storage drives than usual for ATX tower cases. The computer I built is heavy and loud but will serve me well for another 5 years easily. Another method for frame rate conversion that is easier and produces better results than Resolve is Chronos model in Topaz Video Enhance AI software :)

@@BackusCreativeImaging Wow, your rig is crazy. I am still rocking a 6700k and 2080Super. I need an upgrade soon. I am trying to move away from being mac dependent with FCPX and Logic, switching to Resolve and Ableton -- but they're like learning a new language. I will be watching more of your tutorials for sure.

Remember, it's best with simpler shots with simple motion like drone shots. Also, try out Chronos model in Video Enhance AI which I think does a better job than this :)

Thanks, liked and subbed. I got a couple of questions if you may assist: 1. If I have 30fps and 60fps clips which I want to slow down to 80/40% on the 23.976 timeline - will this then play as a normal 24fps clip? 2. I also got 25fps clip which I want to edit on that same timeline, so can I just go to clip attributes, and convert these to 24fps?

Thanks for such a great tutorial!!! I was looking for something like this for a long time! I have a question through. What if I just go to Clip Attributes and set the clip framerate to 24p (the original framerate is 30p and the timeline is 24p)? Would this be better or worse? And the other question. What if my video is pretty long... Does it make sense to cut the drone clips on a separate timeline, color grade them, apply the settings mentioned in your video and then render it all out? And then take that new clip and bring it on the timeline with the rest of the footage so the computer doesn't have to do the math all the time while i'm editing the video?
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 жыл бұрын
To your 1st question: that won't solve the issue or get around it unfortunately. 2nd question? Yes! Whatever you think. This is a compute intensive task so I do recommend "baking in" the effect actually onto a clip with whatever re timing effects you may be doing on top, render it out, then re insert into timeline for color grading and effects. That's what I do if I have time :)

It all depends on what your goals are. Shoot the target frame rate and usually only a different frame rate when intending to slow the footage down :)
