Thanks for this video - I have two Panasonic cameras - HPX 170 (2009) and HC-X2 (2023)...I am looking answer for 2 questions: Question 1. There is a option in HPX170 and it calls MARK CLIP - this function we could set to USER button on body of camera and quickly mark in meta info (OK) in video clip. It was very useful. Do you know where is it in these new cameras? Qustion 2 : Is there any quicker way to change the recording system from 4K to 1080p except the pushing and scrolling throw the camera menu? Is there any way to shourtcut this? THANK YOU

Answer for Q1: I sold this camera after using it for 115 hours. I never explored that function, I don't know where it's at. Answer for Q2: The only other way was to set up a custom setting file with 60fps then assigning it a User button. Shutter angle wasn't a feature. I think these cameras are great if you don't want to change your frame rate rapidly. This annoyed me along with lack of linear manual focusing, so I ended up selling the camera. The image quality is great though, I just decided to keep using Panasonic's Lumix MFT cameras which are more customizable.

And I love the tiny sensor in this camera along with the built in ND filters. I just wished the camera had shutter angle, a little more customization and linear focusing. A slightly more magnified viewfinder would have been nice too. Other than that (software updates could fix all of my complaints minus the average quality viewfinder) it really is a great camera. The image quality is excellent.

How do you find the lens in terms of sharpness wide ooen? In the video, it looks decently sharp and has a bit of CA. What was the focus throw of the lens and was it easy to pull focus reliably?
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 2 ай бұрын
The lens aperture was set wide open at f/0.95 for every shot in this video. It is softer the closer your subject is, the tuatara at 1:19 was recorded at about 0.5 meters away and to me it's sharp (especially for video use). Voigtländer lenses, being more of a classic design, have some chromatic aberration that (of course) isn't corrected by any lens profiles in camera, but the slight imperfection is part of their unique look. The lens focusing throw is a lot more sensitive than the Voigtländer 42.5mm f/0.95 lens, it takes maybe a centimeter of turning at medium distances to change subjects that are quite far apart. However, this was the first time I used the lens in any significant way after owning it for two months and doing a few quick test shots. On this session at the zoo, I missed focus on only a few shots in all the clips I recorded including the ones I didn't use for the video. It is a bit more sensitive than I'd prefer, but I got used to it. I don't use a follow focus, I find them to be annoying, but one of those could allow you to reduce the sensitivity of the focusing. Overall the lens is a joy to use in my opinion and I especially like that there's a complete set of Voigtländer f/0.95 lenses covering the main focal lengths 😊

You're right, I do have knowledge to share. Thank you for the idea, I need to look into this. My exposure and color grading process is complex and could warrant a course; From stacking fixed stop IR CUT ND filters for color fidelity (no VNDs), utilizing the power of Auto Exposure Lock in Shutter Priority with Shutter Angle rather than full manual for less missed shots when changing frame rates (exposure is maintained), effectively manually focusing by interpreting focus peaking well, to denoising with Neat Video via auto or custom noise profiles to extract maximum signal to noise ratio then baking down with the Node Cache feature in Resolve, to subtle sharpening in LAB color space, to tone mapping using HDR Wheels in Resolve, to compression of the music for optimal listening with FabFilter Pro C-2 (or the built in audio compression in Resolve), these simple videos at zoos incorporate advanced techniques not many solo videographers utilize for getting the most out of their footage. I know I could help people and make a little extra money too. Thank you for the encouragement 😊

Thanks! I did it all on this one. Even denoised all shots to extract the most signal to noise ratio out of the footage with Neat Video plugin for Resolve as the first node in my color grade. I made a custom noise profile for each shot (often being able to use auto profile which is quicker) and pre-rendered DNxHR 4:4:4 10-bit clips using the Node Cache feature, which generates Render Cache clips that can be graded on top, then rendered! Also I use the HDR Wheels to grade my VLOG-L footage as you know. I'm happy with the results, I appreciate your compliment 😊

Hi, I read your review of the Panasonic Lumix GH5 II and came to your page. I’m researching a system for my 12 yr old who is interested in learning wildlife videography and photography. Would you recommend this setup? And do you recommend any courses to learn use of…? Thank you!
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 3 ай бұрын
It's a great setup but I manually focus everything in video and have been using Lumix cameras for 10 years. Not everyone is okay with manual focusing in video even though it's actually more fun and with practice you get good at it. If you want good video autofocus in a Lumix MFT camera, the Lumix G9 II is a great option that rivals cameras from Sony and Canon in video autofocus. Lumix cameras have the most customizability, Panasonic does not cripple these cameras and loads them up with features. It takes time to learn the fundamentals of video and photo before you get decent at it. If your kid doesn't mind tinkering a bit more and learning old fashioned concepts like Ansel Adam's Zone System for exposure, Panasonic cameras are the best. I have mine completely customized to my liking and can shoot effectively and fast. The Panasonic Leica 200mm f/2.8 is a great wildlife lens, but it's expensive. I'd recommend the Lumix 100-300mm II lens for a beginner. It's not as impressive but it's way cheaper. Go look at Marlene Hielema's videos, she used the 100-300 II on the original Lumix G9 (an older but still great photography centric camera) for a few years and made lots of videos on it!

Watch this video from Marlene for example, using the much cheaper Lumix 100-300mm II lens. See if you like the quality from it. It's a good, lightweight lens a kid can easily handle: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9WAf9Z83qu5Yac.htmlsi=PYiFR5RNn9ioYrse

I record in 16:9 typically for wildlife, so 3840x2160 in UHD 4K. However, I use the 2.35 framing outline in my camera. In post, my timeline is 3840x1636 which is roughly 2.35 aspect ratio. I then zoom into the footage by 1.33x. Remember to always render your project at the intended aspect ratio. The display device will naturally have the black bars if the aspect ratio doesn't match; don't bake in the bars into the video. I enjoy the 2.35 aspect ratio. It fits on most phone screens in landscape mode very well. A lot of movies are also shot in similar aspect ratios such as 2.4 and 2.35 😊

Thank you! My color grading has been slacking but I'll do better on my next one haha! The 200mm f/2.8 wasn't used wide open on most shots, like f/4.0 or even f/5.6 to have a stop or two of leeway for lower light in the shade without having to switch NDs too much etc, as I shoot with a proper shutter angle (as you do). This lens is amazing. I see you have been upping your skills ... your work looks better than those shooting on camera setups costing 3x as much. Keep it up! 😊

@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 5 ай бұрын
This is 24fps, rendered as 16 bit half float EXR image sequence. If you go under render settings in Cycles / EEVEE, you'll see a panel / option called "Motion Blur". Check it on. You'll see a shutter time or whatever of 0.5 as default. Leave it at 0.5 for the "180 degree shutter angle" rule common in videography and movie making. Check out my latest video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5lnhrCSvLPdZ40.htmlsi=qVfYzcqY_6JCXVWT - You'll see motion blur (180 degree shutter angle) as well since I'm using neutral density filters. In Blender you don't need to worry about neutral density filters. Just turn on the motion blur and you're good to go on a more cinematic / professional look. I'm also self taught, it took time. I bought a bunch of courses, I've followed along on the greatest hits of Blender courses, from CG Boost to BlenderMarket and others. I used to use Maya. Blender is way better for a freelance 3D artist. Good luck in your learning journey ☺️

Thank you! First time using the Voigtländer, still learning it, so you can expect the next video to look better! I'm buying the other four f/0.95 lenses too in the series, they are amazing! Next time I'll use the 60mm and the 17.5mm most likely. The birds at 2:18, that was in a nocturnal exhibit. The light was incredibly low, lower than you see in the video (I raised it a bit in the "light" wheel of the HDR Wheels). ISO was only 1250 at f/0.95. Then denoise in Neat Video (or Davinci Resolve's denoising), and got great results ☺️

Hey awsome work here! I just got the 50-200mm, and I love it! But there's this thing i've noticed I can't seem to find any information on; On manual focus, (and the focus is set to 'linear') the focus 'snaps' from point to point when I slowly turn the focus ring.. It's not a normal graudal rack focus as you'd expect. I can sorta 'fix' his by setting the focus throw from 240degrees to 720degrees or more... but what the heck that is just TOO many turns lol. None of the other panny leica lenses I have has this problem. Does your lens have the same issue?
@BackusCreativeImaging
@BackusCreativeImaging 5 ай бұрын
This happens on the original 100-400 and many other lenses too. The workaround I discovered is to set linear focusing to Maximum. Not ideal but solves the problem. Also make sure both your camera and lens are updated. I'm not sure if it happens on the 10-25 and 25-50, but it will happen on the older lenses. Set to Maximum and it'll work perfectly.

I have a GH5, videostyle run/gun/point/shoot. I shoot in one area, human headsize box. AFF, FHD, 60 fps, 90d, like 709. Daytime lens lumix 14-140mm, lowlight Sigma 16mm 1.4.
