I think the main reason some people are rooting for Ashes to fail is their need to be right. These people said at the beginning it was a scam and they'd rather be right then have a good game.

Please change the title/thumbnail, this makes it look like the game turned out to be a scam for people who don't know about the game and don't end up clicking on the video.

i know narc doesn't actually think it's a scam, but others do. imo, and i have no investment in the game nor am i sure that it's even MY kind of game, everything about what they've demonstrated so far convinces me it's not a scam. not even a little. they have funding and a way to generate more money throughout the project, they're going about development carefully rather than just trying to knock out a product before a deadline, they have a reasonably sized team, a transparent process...if you have experience with game dev especially, listening to steven talk about anything for an hour is pretty convincing in itself

I have been following Ashes since they announced kickstarter. I have spent 0 dollars. I was not bothered by the BR at all and knew exactly what it was for. Literally all of people's problems with Ashes revolve around their own lack of knowledge of the game/its development... or their own failures as far as giving money to previous projects that failed/were a scam. People are just a bunch of whiney impatient children with poor spending habits and goldfish levels of attention-span. I can't blame Intrepid for those people's interpretations.

Steven said that the battle royale thing saved them potentially months of progress, because they found some fault in the core networking code or something and it had to be rewritten from the ground up. They wouldnt have discovered it without the battle royale thing and wouldve just built stuff on top of shit code. im paraphrasing the shit out of this, but essentially it was pretty worth, since the end product's gonna be good either way. im sure one of your discord nerds can find a vid where Steven talks about this.

Braver of Worlds backer here, I invested because I knew that Steven wanted to create a quality product. The early stuff they showed off was very obviously set dressing. Steven even tries to downplay exactly that when his developer talks about the new season system. I want to get my hands on an MMORPG wherein virtually all levels of the company are passionate about making it. The switch to UE5 is the absolute best news this project could've gotten. The engine is tricked out with powerful features that streamline the development process. This is an accelerator and once they familiarize themselves with it, they'll truly be able to put the pedal to the metal.

TBH i still think giving money for the development of a random not-yet-existing MMO is a better way to spend money than spending $100k on diablo immortal or a similar amount on any gacha game...

I am an experienced game dev and I think what they're doing is really scummy. The assets are pretty lame for the tech that is available, they didn't even bother to change the default skybox that Unreal Engine brings. Just because the artists are talented and able to push out assets with reused rigs doesn't mean it is good.

Man, I was initially so excited about AoC, but all those mothly exclusive cosmetics half a decade prior to lunch were an instant and absolute turn off. Why can't we just be nitty and gritty adventurers or mercenaries that come on up from the dirt and nothing, rags and plates. You know, like visually see the progression of our characters adventurous journey, starting to look like a decent well equipped warrior or mage halfway through the game and finally looking like legends at max level. Or maybe earlier for those with enough fortune in their pockets(ingame) or maybe dice rolls. Cosmetics simply entirely kill the possibility of having such a system in the first palce. Also not a fan of people riding around on all kinds of different creatures, just feels off to me.

I am a OG Backer of this game. I am also someone who started MMOing back in 1999. I knew going in, it would be many years before we saw anything. Im not upset and will not be giving them more money till I play the game. And I am ok with this project making it or failing. I am going to go back to playing Elden Ring now. I have one really big question to the developers in this game. I know you aren't one of them but why not just drop the question right here. Why does attack/spells effects have to be SO MASSIVE / SO FLASHY / SO COLORFUL that you can barely see anything else on the screen. I have not played this game but by just watching 5 minute video of it my eyes hurt already from all the blue, orange, yellow etc. massive in size effects ( it almost feels like Path of Exile - also overtuned effects which is the main reason why i do not like PoE anymore despite having amazing depth and content ... if they make PoE a board game without these flashy animations I would go back and play it again but with this mess on the screen no thanks. ). I do not understand why gamers have to be put and chained onto PC's for several hours a day - give the stereotype model modern games have where they pretty much almost force you to play 6 hours a day and do all the "dailies" otherwise you are done, no longer relevant ... tied UP with unhealthy and absolutely unnecessary flashy animations that for an amount of 6 hours - Oh boy i can't even imagine what would that feel like :D What do you guys think ?

Narc while I understand you may want a new MMO or like this.. I got news for you which you can confirm on your own: During the ArcheAge ALPHA Steven's had a guild called the "White Order" I was part of his guild and he surrounded himself around other CEO's and would openly conversate about pyramid schemes (not saying AoC is one, but he has spoken about it) and ill practices that have been banned in the corporate world for years and which had laws implemented into the most current CPA exams (Steven didn't cause any of these laws, I am just speaking plainly of how questionable corporate society can be. Unfortunately he did mention being a part of such schemes in the past.) What I'll say to everyone: Take what Steven says with a grain of salt. If he can produce GREAT, however if you are getting the ILLUSION of production, then you are EXACTLY where they wants you. Hopefully no one gets triggered by this but instead are more vigilant when dumping their money into a game. My m8's are still dumping money into Star Citizen and I've assured them we'll be flying back to and from Mars by the time that game releases.

I've been following ashes since 2017 (loosely) finally bought into it today after their July Livestream, I wanted to wait until I was absolutely 100% on spending the money and I'm totally confident in ashes. I genuinely think we'll have alpha 2 in winter of this year, idk though I'm sure I'm being super hopeful

But playing devil’s advocate here, we only have Steven’s word that he invested that much personal money into the game, so I don’t know if I would use that as evidence to convince someone. (Personally I believe Steven)

No one else thinks that pre selling mounts before the game is even out is very bad? WoW classic mount purchase was a player objective, Flying on TBC and even Fast flying. While Mr. Steven says he invested around 45 million into the developement, its not like there is actual proof of him doing that, right? It would hinge on trusting him on that. Wether or not that is true requires context. In the case that it is true, it would be proof that it isnt a scam indeed. There is still a chance for it to be an actual scam, a chance that everyone should keep in mind. But it would perhaps have to be a very elaborate one. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

standing still, looking out with unlimited render distance do take a fair bit of pc power. but when there's nothing else going on like effects etc thats not really much to go on. but to summarize: DONT PRE PURCHASE anything ever, simple as that. Then you wont be dissapointed ;)

I haven't played MMOs seriously since WotLK where I was realm first raider. Got burnt out, and never really returned to 'full time' MMO playing. Played a bit of Cata, loved the super hard dungeons at the start, and every blue item felt like an epic. Got bored of raiding and took a break. Came back to play midway through MoP for a few months. Took a break until WoD, leveled, got bored and quit and haven't played WoW since. Dabbled with ESO, GW2 but feel like my MMO days are over. I do follow the development of WoW for nostalgic reasons, and I'm not even sure if I'll play Ashes when it eventually releases, though I like what I see (though not a fan of a proliferation of glowing mounts; makes things too garish and less grounded IMO). Anyway, story time is over. I just wanted to say that I enjoy Narc's content; for the skits, and his general view of MMOs, which align a fair bit with my own. I play these videos on my phone in the kitchen while cooking dinner (no Fortress of Pizza™ for me), and am entertained. Keep it up!

First time I seen trailer for this game I was WOOOAAAH! Whether it ever hits the light of commercial release is another thing for it's one of the most ambitious MMOs in "development" I've seen. TBH I'm not holding my breath for anything like the advertised release. Hope I'm wrong but we'll see. It's most definitely a game I would buy.

Some assest reuse is nice, if I see random mob 1234 and think "Thatd be a cool mount" Reusing the assest is understandable, likewise for "That would be a cool mount in blue" Sometimes reskins are nice, wow i think does pretty good with making their mounts variable when they reskin them.

While the Battle Royal game version is speculative topic, I don't agree that cosmetics sold in mmo games are bad thing. Sure, it's really bad in case of Ashes of Creation - as they are keep selling stuff, which pretty much doesn't exist (aka you can't use it yet... if ever?). But I prefer to support devs by purchasing cosmetics like outfits, rather than having BS p2w elements. You are not forced, nor obligated to purchase cosmetics anyway.

All developers should stay with cosmetics only in cash shop! Sick of P2W games...
