I'm 31 and when I was a student my favorite song was So Yesterday by Hilary Duff, Complicated by Avril Lavigne, and Pieces of me by Ashlee Simpson.

I first heard this song when I was 16 and in a psychiatric hospital for anorexia. It was autumn when I was finally released from the hospital and this song reminds me of falling leaves and Halloween and finally being on the road to recovery.

Early 2000's were a great time to be alive. When people weren't walking around like zombies glued to their phone. No social media. It was basically the 90's spilled over into the next century with added benefits of technology, without the socially destructive nature of it.

The 2000s were way way way better than the current era. Which is why Gen Z is trying to bring back the 2000s culture and style back to life. Glad I lived through those days as a teen.

This song is like a time machine for those bittersweet teenage years. We tragically lost Steve on 110804. My heart has never been the same without him.

I remember the Summer of 2004 I was listening to this going to Six Flags New Orleans. My friends and I from high school went there 2-4 times a month that entire Summer because our friend Griff worked there and let us in. Often this song would be playing either to or from the park. We were a solid crew of 5-6 all tight from school. That was the last Summer of normalcy that I can remember. Griff got let go from the park that following Summer and some of the guys either moved, got jobs, dropped out of school, or got into relationships. Then Katrina hit and flooded the park. It’s still standing with a sign which says “closed for storm.” Every time I see that park I just think of this song. That was the last normal Summer I ever had. Since then everything is still a work in progress going on 19 years.

I saw on Tiktok a video talking about this song that had a problem on SNL. I hope Ashley can be seen by media and society with her beautiful songs.
