Big thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video and enabling me to continue to produce these videos - also for helping me to finally resolve and streamline my website situation!! Head to www.squarespace.com/ashleyharwood to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.
In this video, I learn how to drive a tractor, fell a tree, and mill a log! Felling a tree is something I never attempted before shooting this video. I am well aware of the dangers in this type of work. Thankfully, I had some experts (Chris Rauber and his dad, Brent a.k.a. Papa Bear Rauber) to guide me through the process. This was a ton of fun! I hope y'all enjoy the video.
Please note that this video is not intended to be an instructional video.

Good job on the tree felling. I grew up using wood heat so we learned a lot about how to cut down and cut up trees. Safety is the first consideration, our neighbor was killed cutting down a tree.

Ashley, you are a brave lady!! You will try anything. I'm in central New York, also cut trees to turn. Turning is dangerous, to a point, but sawing a standing tree, more so. From the tree to the Bowl is a great feeling of acommlishment, that most woodturners, don't have that chance, if they don't live in the country. Great Video, keep up your good work....

I grew up around all this sorta stuff then spent 20 years living in a subdivision. Now I'm on acreage and have some dead trees to bring down. Tremendous respect to the men and women that do this stuff. A falling tree is no joke. Hope we get to see some bowls from that tree soon.

Almost August, and I'm so looking forward to colder days again. When I see this I feel the want to get up and help out, just simply do something. Summer is just too easy in my eyes, and I'm a person who give up when things get easy. Nothing like a natural resistance to get you on your feet. And it's completely free even, how about that.

I am SO glad that you used the safety equipment (like chainsaw chaps, etc.) that too often gets omitted when this type of video is made. I ma old, not obsolete, because all my life we used ear protection, eye protection and body protection, while so many of my peers now need hearing aids and such.

@johnhartmusii1499
@johnhartmusii1499 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, I am happy to see that you used much better safety equipment during the felling operation on this video. I will suggest that when felling, your wedge should be about 90°, instead of the much smaller wedges that your friend suggested. The larger wedge angle will keep the hinge intact until the tree is almost on the ground, helping keep the tree on path to your intended felling target.

Another great informational video, on how NOT to do a lot of things. Ashley, if you had of tipped that Tractor over, you would have done one of two things. One, tried to jump off the Tractor, which is the most dangerous thing to do. Two, not using the Seat Belt, or having the ROPS up (Roll Over Protection System), it is there for a reason, and as your head is clearly higher than than the hinge part of the ROPS, you would be injured. Both of those things, if you had of been injured, as the ROPS isn't up, you would be wiped by the insurance, as safety measures haven't been taken into account. Don't get me wrong, I love that you try new things, and show them to us all, so we can see if we want to try them out. And I'm not picking these out because your a female, I would be saying the same to anyone that was clearly doing something that puts them at risk. Others commenting have pointed out things already that I was going to mention, and I'm not here to bash you, just please take some things into account, esp. as your sharing your adventures online, which I truly appreciate as it shows people what we do to produce the products they like to purchase, and helps them to appreciate what goes into it. Please be safe, keep turning, and we want to see you doing so safely.

He should have put a new blade on that saw before you even started cutting. If you watch the video, you see the sawdust coming off the saw. If you had a sharp or new blade, you would have been done in a minute or less. There should’ve been chips flying off that saw, no sawdust. Just a little bit of information for you on your next tree felling adventure. Good video for you though.
