The last clip, people don’t know or don’t care about that specific part of the Highway Code. There was next to no information put out about it unless you avidly watch the news or read the code. The amount of times I’ve had someone almost rear-end me or angrily honk the horn while I’m allowing someone to cross in that situation is ridiculous.

A note for your last clip. The reason the new(ish) changes don't work as they should is because it's a half baked attempt of Dutch style rules. Where we've not actually implemented the infrastructure that makes those rules so much safer, such as; continuous pavements, tighter turning junctions, padestrian priority traffic lights, traffic claiming, and the ilk. We need infrastructure change along with the rules.

My days of pushing vehicles are past now (or at least being of any use in doing it), but I tip my hat to you for helping out. That junction in the last clip is a prime candidate for white lines to indicate the pedestrians crossing place. The RM van came close to breaking the law there. I've still seen pedestrians forced to stop in the road or even jump out of the way while a horn-blowing eejit barges past them. Time for some prosecutions on that, I believe.

About 5 other people and I were almost knocked down at a pedestrian crossing yesterday by a van driver who failed to notice he had a red light until the last possible moment and emergency stopped. He was so close his bonnet ended up half way into the crossing. A miracle he didn't hit anyone. He must have been distracted by a phone or paperwork. It was actually quite scary.

That junction at the end is a prime candidate to have a zebra crossing installed at the drop kerb just prior to the junction. While every driver should be looking out for everyone, that particular scenario with a two lane road *and* two junctions emerging close together is very high risk and I doubt many drivers would be thinking about pedestrians crossing but instead thinking more about getting to the junction before someone pulls out, or pulling out before someone else comes along the road This one needs additional traffic management to keep everyone safe in my opinion 👍

Helping that learner reminded me. The other day I was waiting for a learner to parallel park. I could have got past them, realistically, but didnt want to add a bus going past to them to the challenges. A passenger leaned forward and commented "If they cant park, they should be on the road" I clapped back by pointing out that they are LEARNING to get better. A lack of empathy bothers me.

Hi Ashley, the intro clip was most likley a mechanical failure called deisel runaway. This is where a deisel vehicle's engine has blown piston rings and the car revs up all by itsself because of it running on its own oil. Easy to mistake for just revving it up but it is uncontrollable.

Hi Ashley, I wanted to point out a fault on your part in one of these clips. At 10:29, the delivery vehicle begins to emerge from your right, and you press your horn briefly to warn them of your presence. From watching other driving fail clips on KZfaq, I've learned that you are actually supposed to hold your horn down continuously until you arrive at your destination. 😉 Keep up the good work

The amount of horrible drivers out on the roads now! - I got beeped at for waiting for a wheelchair user to get to the other side of zebra crossing! - I got beeped at for leaving a junction clear at a red light! - I got beeped at for letting a bus out whilst we were all crawling at a snails pace during school run! Driving has become less and less enjoyable, and now it is just a stressful necessity of life!!! 😖

Good use of the horn, and your observation Ashley. @07:14 the cyclist would have had more of a fright if he had hit the car !!

Another good video. I edit a local magazine and I am definitely going to be sharing the ethos of good driving that you promote with the readers, and recommend your channel. Particularly around good horn use which most people seem to see as a telling off, no matter how well intentioned it is.

In the clip where Ashley gets out to help push a stranded minibus, I recall a situation some time ago now. I was walking to my local shop when I was asked by the driver of a small car if I could give him a push as his battery was flat and he'd stalled the car I was happy to do so, but noticed there were four very large passengers in the car I asked for them to get out of the car before I would push it and they actually refused, I said to the driver I cannot push the car with you four passengers in it, he shrugged his shoulders and I carried on my way. It's nice to be nice but there are limits!

That's why I still don't walk out at a junction now like I am seeing so many others doing. Very few people stopping for pedestrians still, I especially hate those where one person is waving you across but there's still traffic coming the other way and they're getting visibly agitated you're not stepping out into traffic.

7:10 really excellent use of the horn. I was knocked off my bike in a similar situation except I was passing a coach and had no view at all of anything turning into the side road. If the coach driver had seen me in their mirror and beeped their horn it could have prevented that accident

Like you, in the last clip, I try to give pedestrians the chance to cross but it often makes me feel uncomfortable as I can't control other drivers. If the DVLA wants these to be crossing points make them zebra crossings.

11:15 scary thing is, managing the risk by accelerating is sometimes seen by these riskmakers as escalation or chastising.

The very last clip at around 12:20, absolutely spot on. The authorities really need to have a massive publicity campaign to make folks aware of the "new" rules...which aren't so new now! From my own observations, very few drivers follow these new rules and it really hasn't made much difference at all. To the extent that when they do and allow me to cross, I actually give them a big "thumbs up", a nod and mime "Thank You" as if to say "You are a very rare breed of driver that actually understands the rules".

Final clip: Greater Manchester wanted to put junction-based zebra road markings in place. This is in common with several European countries. People understand zebras. They haven’t kept abreast of even old HC advice, let alone the recent updates. However, junction zebras were dismissed because they don’t have amber beacons to me make a full zebra. Bonkers!

I hear people always say it's not worth the risk to help people out, because you don't know what could happen, but in most cases I believe it's good to help. Also, about what you said about cycling twitter, I believe the horn use was a life saver. Oh, and speaking of twitter, love your Ford Focus as a new logo. I also believe the DVSA should be doing more to help people out at junctions. Maybe it's time for more zebra crossings at junctions too.

I’m currently in the process of reforming the way I drive and ride. I’ve still got a way to go but my stress levels have decreased significantly and myself and the road users around me are safer as a result. I found that relearning how to manage anger on the road is helping me in my day to day life a lot more than I would have imagined as well. Thanks a lot @AshleyNeal for your videos and exposing me to my own faults and helping me improve for the future.

The pickup at the start is what's called diesel run away. It's where the engine won't turn off and it's running on its own engine oil. It's the death of an engine.

9:05 I think is an example of why you shouldn't dither. Be decisive. You had plenty of time to move but you sat there and awaited the car approaching before moving, so naturally they thought you were continuing to sit there and committed to the overtake.

The smoking/revving pickup at the start is probably a diesel engine runaway. Basically, if an alternative source of fuel occurs - e.g. oil leaking into the air-intake - then there's no easy way to stop a diesel engine in that situation. Either wait for the alternative source of fuel to run out, or else suffocate the engine by stuffing something into the air-intake are about the only options.

Given your knowledge, The way you articulate situations especially and the overwhelming amount of evidence you have from your dashcam and those sent in, I say you would be best placed to go after the DVSA over these rules that are just making roads more dangerous for drivers, Cyclists and the general public. Another great video, I am awaiting the SD card back from the local police as I was nearly involved in/Witness to an accident early hours of the morning at the end of September, I had a 6 passengers in my smax who had came over from Portugal and Switzerland for a Mauy Thai event. When I dropped them at the airport the next Day they said to me 'Thank you for everything you have done for us and for saving our lives last night Brother' I told them that I didn't think I had 'Saved their lives' but they were welcome, When I get the SD card back and if the footage is still there I will send it in for your opinion.

1:05 Had a similar thing happen to me recently when I was out delivering for a supermarket in a fairly large van, meaning I had a bit of trouble getting past them. Only thing is, the two people coming the other way were in a marked police car, no lights or sirens on... not unsafe at all, just a little uncourteous!

The beep with the cyclist going passed the junction, no issues from me with that one. It wasn’t a blast, it was a toot. It was good to see caution shown by both (the driver didn’t just accelerate across the road) and good that the whole situation was a non event. Even the van driver fixing their mistake to allow the car to turn was good to see 👍

As a professional driver, HGV class 1... Your chanel is the only place I recall ever being told about this change in the rules... Neither from employer or anywhere else in the press. And going by the reaction I get when I try to give priority from other road users I guess I am the only one aware , even the pedestrians who just stand there not knowing wether to cross or not...

In the opening clip, I think that may have been a runaway diesel. Diesel engines don't have a throttle valve, so if they receive an uncontrolled fuel source (eg. an oil leak from a broken turbocharger), they will just run until that fuel source is removed, or you find a way to starve it of air. In most cases, when the fuel source is the engine oil, it'll run until the oil gets low enough to seize the bearings - and it'll make those huge clouds of smoke in the process.

How are you finding the Adaptive LED headlights on the focus? I have adaptive Xenon headlights on my current car and love them. Perfect for twitsy roads.

It’s nice to be nice, but I would be interested to know what the defence is for the offence of driving on the footway at 2’24”. The road appears wide enough to park at the kerb (and is, in any case, already obstructed by the broken down vehicle). If the Focus has got the L-box on, you’re reinforcing bad parking by doing so; conversely, by parking at the kerb you would highlight that the parked van is parked unlawfully. Otherwise, I applaud the effort. (Of course, I’ve come across cars/taxis where that’s just how they park to let passengers on/off, and sod anybody who’s inconvenienced by it. Got to risk-assess any approach to make sure you can handle the potential escalation.)

Last clip. Happens too often. Exactly the same scenario where my (correct) holding back has suggested to the pedestrian that the other side is clear for them to go, but the opposing traffic does not abide by the law and almost clobbers them. There needs to be more PR on this otherwise there will be deaths and injuries

At 10:00, I would have done exactly as you. Wait behind the line at the green light as there wasn't sufficient space to clear the crossing. This is why it also pays to keep your distance in slow moving traffic, so that you can easily make this sort of decision and not get yourself trapped. So many drivers just follow the tail of the vehicle in front and don't think about this sort of situation. As for the white BMW SUV jumping the red light and cheating it's way through the traffic, words fail me!

4:39 Coincidentally, I saw the same this today. 😮 A kid of the quite same age, on the passenger seat, but worst: window was down and he has the head out the window, engoying the sunny yet chilly day. Imagine an emergency break, by any chance. 🤦

That first clip is a classic case of a runaway diesel. There's either an issue with the piston rings or the turbo and the engine is burning engine oil instead of diesel. Switching the ignition off won't stop it. If it's a manual, stick it in a high gear with the brake fully on and dump the clutch, it's the only way you can realistically stop one if you're on the side of the road. If you have an automatic diesel, there's not much you can do other than sit there and wait for the engine to seize up.

At 2:53, from Van Horizontal to Car Vertical! Joking aside, good on you Ash to get out and help them push the van out the way. I'd likely do the same, making sure first to lock my car if I don't have a passenger (my Mum) inside and even then, I'd be taking the keys out of the ignition and with me. Don't want to be a victim of theft or car jacking.

Will you be giving your thoughts on the ST at all, I’d be interested in your opinion not only as an advanced driver, but also compared to the other cars you’ve owned.

At around 11:00 re "Age gets to us all and it's going to happen to me and you". I often think about that Ash and it's one reason why my Mum and I like to keep busy attending all these events. I'm a fair bit older than you Ash, so it's "going to happen" to me somewhat earlier. I do hope I will be able to continue driving in an alert and safe fashion well into my senior years and I do try and lead a healthy lifestyle. In a way, I also consider myself "lucky" to have had cataracts at an early age and had the surgery to have them removed back in Oct 2014, two weeks apart for each eye, back in Vancouver. I have since enjoyed 6/6 vision in each eye without contact lenses or glasses despite being at -14 dioptres of myopia. Of course now, my "prescription lenses" are inside my eyes. I'm also lucky I have a Mum who is relatively healthy and can do all these trips with me. If not, I would not make these trips on my own and leave her at home alone. She is 25 years my senior btw. As you may recall, she did have a medical episode at the British Motor Show in Farnborough earlier this year and was taken by ambulance to the nearest A&E where we spent 8 hours for her to have various tests and be given the all clear. Likely to have been acid reflux and was in no way cardiac related. Fingers crossed that was a one off. She does get tired with all these trips though, especially bearing in mind that many folks in their 30s would find them tiring! We have many trips planned in the near future and beyond, so very much hope that age doesn't catch up with us too much! I do hope you will continue this channel for many years and indeed decades to come by the way. Hope I get to meet you again btw...and yes possibly do a Viewers Drives at some point.

7:17 Bit of a different situation where some of cycling twitter disagreed with you was when the beeping vehicle was using the horn to facilitate an overtake of cycles. Using that kind of logic at 6:05 with the folded up wing mirror you should you have beeped your horn at them -only to make him aware of your presence as you proceed past him, no?

Absolutely agree especially with the last clip with the lady and the pram. So many people are not clear on the rules regarding giving way to pedestrians and i've seen many times where confusion / lack of awareness simply creates extra risk for everyone.

These videos really help to improve my driving. Even after 4,5 years with my driving license Im still learning.

Interesting point about communicating - it's only communicating if the other person engages. If they don't, it's just talking into the void, and I've found this is true at work, with friends or SO's. There's no point in arguing "but I told them" if they aren't listening - if you don't get a response, assume that events will play out the same as if you didn't talk at all.

I drive in The Highlands of Scotland. A common sight are mirrors folded in particularly on camper vans/motorhomes. As far as I'm concerned, you are making your vehicle unroadworthy, and the authorities should be clamping down on this. Like you said Ashley. They can't see you behind.

Last clip.....agree DVSA needs to extract a digit rather quickly. What about an on line Highway Code learning course? Need to take and complete it successfully, say, with 12 months otherwise your driving licence is suspended. I suspect that could well focus a few minds!!

4:31 When I was on the private hires I had a fare once, a young couple with a couple year old toddler. They were all sat in the back, with the toddler on the lads lap. I looked in the nearside mirror whilst doing around 30mph, and the lad had the toddler from the wait up held out of the window. Needles to say I lost my temper with him, and canceled the fare, and dropped them off.

Yep pedx at junction rules are ridiculous, i did not see any problem previously ie. Find a crossing or wait till its safe. Now you get one extreme to another peds either running into roads (no where near a junction ) or ones that just stand there doing nothing at junction when you stop and it is safe for them to cross. Would love to see the accident stats.

1:05 Both cars arrived at the gap at essentially the same time, and the yellow car kept creeping carefully (never fully stopping). It looks like they just made sure that there's no collision while pulling over. 2:22 I would have assumed that they are one of those kinds of driver who just stop in the middle of the road to sort out their loading/unloading or inter-personal issues. It didn't occur to me at all that they legitimately might have a defect. 10:35 There may have been sun reflecting from your headlights. I don't think they would have gone at _that_ time on purpose.

Recently I was driving home from work and after a short while went to look in my left mirror to realise I couldn't see in it because it was folded in. I therefore adjusted my driving to compensate until I could pull over and sort it. Turns out my car had been crashed into whilst parked, causing a dent in the door and the mirror to be pushed in. Needless to say, I was raging!

@ 7:20 According to the Highway Code rule 112: "The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn while stationary on the road when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am except when another road user poses a danger." I think the Highway Code takes precedence over Twitter. In this instance Ashely was not moving but the van driver DID pose a danger - not to Ashley perhaps but it does not specify that the other road user must pose a danger to the one sounding the horn. I also tend to use my horn to gently warn cyclists of my presence because they seem to be oblivious of other road users.

There is a particular exit from a smaller but extremely busy roundabout near me. 2 lanes exit and I would never give way to a pedestrian there unless it was at a time when no other road users were about or if they proceeded to cross. I’m always ready to stop but I never feel it’s safe too. I’m not concerned about drivers hitting me from behind I can’t manage that with my speed. The problem is the 2 lanes quickly merge to 1 and others treat it as a drag race. If I stop I feel that a pedestrian may then cross when the other lane isn’t. To be honest the rest of the junctions on the roundabout have pedestrian controlled lights so if I was walking I’d just go round the long way. It’s the sort of situation where doing the right thing raises the risk to the pedestrian massively

At around 10:36, the delivery van was also cutting the corner / bend there to make a right turn into the side street. They should have kept further over to the left and continued to moved forward on the main road which bends to the left before committing to their right turn. Had you been following the main road to round to the right, you would have had to give up priority to let the van make it's right turn, and all because it wasn't positioned properly.

there is better visibility and a drop curb at that give way sign you was stopped at also you cant trust indicators at a junction like that, it also gives the vehicle a safe place to stop so its back end aint out in the open to get spanked.

That last one, they need a raised pedestrian crossing there at the very least. It's all the cars not letting her cross (turning into the road) that are the big issue. Even here in the backwaters of Australia, we know to give way to a pedestrian crossing the street you are entering.

Ashley, I'm sure you do your fair bit of walking. The clip you have at 12:40 is exactly how I see 99% of turning cars with pedestrians waiting to cross occur. I lived in London last year around Chelsea. Some of the busy roads there have some really heavy foot traffic crossing roads with traffic turning in. I'll be totally honest and admit I would take my right of way (to my own danger) and cross the road with traffic soon to turn in, more often than not it results in the car honking their horns and swearing at me. I turned it into a bit of a game really, gives me the moral high ground to shout back!

What I took from this video is to pay more attention to delivery drivers as the pressure they're under to deliver fast is ridiculous these days, I wouldn't have thought to put asda vans in that category, as I thought it just meant to look out for your deliveroos and justeat drivers, but I will add supermarket vans to that list as well now,

I'd say 1:12 is against rule 243 of the HC. Another one at 1:50. Same at 2:20 (not the broken down taxi, the white van, probably also the one around the corner). More at 6:06 and 6:10. Probably at 6:40

At the 10:35 mark, with the delivery van you were glaring to the right and then staring in the offside mirror for a good 3 seconds whilst travelling forwards. It took you a full 20 seconds to get over it and regain full concentration on the road. Maybe the delivery driver was glaring at another road user or dwelling on a past incident when he nearly pulled out on you.

The first one with the pickup truck.. I think it was a run away engine! No way to stop it but to stick it in a low gear and try stalling it

Walking home over the weekend, I heard and then saw an Amazon delivery van driving around with a flat tyre and hazards on. Thought he might have been about to pull over. Nope, just slowly continuing on his way to his next stop. Shame I wasn't in my car.

He/ she could have been under the influence of a substance? I have encountered many drivers between 40 and 50 who have equally poor driving ability. Apart from my comments I really enjoy the videos. Genuine question: for the H2 rule, why is it that pedestrians have right of way to cross? If I’m in the vehicle either turning in/out of a T junction and my vision down the road is impaired, I’m not going to put a waiting pedestrian at risk. To me this rule puts pedestrians at MORE risk than good. 🤷‍♂️ thoughts?

7’30” the footage looks ok. On your original footage, do number plates show up? Through the YT filters and on my mobile they are not legible, although the scene is otherwise perfectly clear. Quite often (and you’ll see this on some YT accounts, the camera user calls out a number plate to make a contemporaneous record.

If your car breaks down in a dodgy place, you can usually move it a good few yards with the starter motor, assuming it's not a battery issue. Just put the car in gear, clutch up and start the car, then move and steer to a safer spot. Shouldn't do any damage the starter motor is doing all the work and you don't even have to get out of the car.
