As a retired firefighter with years of being under blue lights, I see this ambulance driver as agressive not just with the sirens and positioning (must have been frightening for the learner), but the horn. He/she should have used the bus lane, as allowed for them. Regarding the answer from the service, looking at the clip there did not appear to be anywhere for the learner to pull in. Good on the instructor for sticking to what was correct.

@clivewsm, Exactly what I was going to say. As an EFAD driver, I would have positioned myself in the bus lane, especially at busier times, you can't expect a whole line of traffic to move into the bus lane. Much like using the hard shoulder on the motorway as illustrated in the educational video.

this would be entirely different in the US. in the US, emergency vehicles only do an undertake as a last resort. the oncoming traffic would also be at fault for not making way. I understand UK law currently does not recognize giving way to an emergency vehicle as sufficient cause to drive a car into an empty bus lane. under US driving codes, that is EXACTLY what the learner would be instructed to do.

If I'm in an unfamiliar area, and I can't see bus lane signs, I would never ever go into the bus lane with blue lights coming up behind me. My first thought is always leave open lanes open. They won't get a penalty for using a bus lane, but we could. If I know the area, and I know it's outside restriction times, i.e not 24hrs, then I'm driving down the bus lane regardless, it makes for much better progress usually.

As a blue light ambulance driver, the driving by this ambulance is so aggressive! When being taught to drive, the bull horn should only be used if there is increased danger or you believe the person in front of you has not heard/seen you and should be used for a very short period of time. This is just to give an alternative noise to the sirens as some people block them out. There is absolutely NO reason why that ambulance couldn't go in the bus lane. I tend to aim for the bus lane if its unoccupied as I don't want people to get fines. At traffic lights I dont expect people to go through them at all! I will use the other side of the road or if there is a lane free i will use that. Personally, whenever i am around learner driver, i try my best to stay a further distance away as they may be nervous and just "slam on", or just be uncertain of how to address the emergency services. At the end of the day, the aim is to make progress through traffic, not necessarily speed to the emergency.

I see blue lights in my mirror and start to slow but they turned their blues off and stayed behind me until we'd passed the roadworks. And this is in spite of the fact that they could have made it past safely without me slowing much. But it DOES show how a GOOD emergency services drives in such a situation unlike the clip Ashley showed here. 1, The ambulance should use the lane of least resistance (in this case, the bus lane) 2, Legally, you do not have to go in a bus lane to allow blue lights past, same as going through a red light (you'd be very lucky to use the excuse of blue lights forced you to perform the manuvour and have the ticket dropped) 3, That wasn't a real ambulance, its a third-party company working on behalf of the ambulance service, and they are typically bad drivers 4, It's actually in blue light training to turn off blue lights when approaching a major junction (so you don't force cars through red lights)

I’m an ADI based in worcester. Ironically, today, Sunday 3rd, I planned a lesson for a student to drive around the city for the first time. One of the subjects we approached at the start of the lesson was the need to be “Blue Light Aware”. As worcester has its fair share of bus lanes, we discussed what she should do in the event of us driving alongside a bus lane, and exactly as in this video, an emergency service vehicle approach from behind. I’ve only been an ADI for 6 months, and this was not something i was trained to do, so I approached the subject logically based on my knowledge (and a little deduction). We discussed the need to stop in a safe place as soon as possible, and that the “emergency services” have exemptions allowing them to safely navigate their way around you. I’m glad I advised her correctly as I did say she should stay in her lane, and not cross into the bus lane to allow the services to pass. “Treat the solid white line like it’s a curb”, I said. “You wouldn’t mount a pavement to make way, so don’t cross that line”. The instructor and particularly the learner, did very well in the clip you showed, especially with the intimidating scenario developing behind them. I’ve shared this video to my student group so they can all learn from it. Thanks for a very useful and informative video.

This happens frequently in Swindon. Ambulances seem to expect others to cross the solid white line into the bus lane, instead of them using it. Fire and Police seem to use the bus lanes when available. As well as committing an offence if the bus lane is used, it makes more sense for the emergency vehicle to use the lane of least resistance, i.e. the bus lane that is otherwise empty, rather than waiting for maybe multiple drivers to move across, bringing delays. The local Ambulance service needs a rethink.

It is safer for emergency service to use the centre of the road and for routine traffic to move over. "Solid line" doesn't change the fact it is a traffic lane moving in the same direction. It is far safer for emergency vehicles to stay close to the centre and not attempt overtaking on variable length bus lanes, and faster to avoid merging whenever a bus lane ends. @@user-dn6kj8xc7rWe Brits are silly in many regards, but when faced with a Highway Code that says, “Keep out of bus lanes”, emergency service publicity which says “Keep out of bus lanes” and civil enforcement that says “You should have kept out of the bus lane”, then the sensible thing to do until the rule is changed is to KEEP OUT OF THE BUS LANE. The point about never undertaking (and therefore that the rule should be to pull into the bus lane) is of course refuted by the fact that a bus lane is pointless if the bus is not allowed to undertake, as buses do every day in normal urban traffic without problems. The better long-term solution is to have the bus lane where one naturally puts trams: on the median. Then the restricted-used lane would also be in the most sensible position for emergency vehicles to use when blue-lighting. None of this would be an issue if money grabbing councils etc we're not taking money in fines when motorists try to give the Emergency vehicle the best path, i.e the straightest, smoothest line. A car in a bus lane for a moment is not an issue. As for going through red lights, many of us know just how important that blue light response is (stand outside a house fire and you'll know). Also it's great to see the team work from complete strangers to clear the path. I know people should not, but it's truly wonderful to see strangers work together to get the blue light on its way. Final point, all emergency services vehicles are covering greater distances as Fire Stations etc are closed, assets consolidated for "efficiency", so they are having far more interactions like this by the length of the journeys they now do. The one thing I've always learned when it comes to emergency vehicles behind you is that you should always remain predictable. If you do something they can't anticipate, they won't know what else you could do. I would classify moving into a bus lane as unpredictable, so wouldn't do it. It's the task of the ambulance to seek the safest and quickest way of moving past. The best a driver can do is adjust their speed to match the situation (i.e. moving slower, so an ambulance can move by more quickly) or move over when it is safe and predictable to do so. The use of indicators can help with this too, as it shows the ambulance you've seen and heard them and are planning to do something.

The only time I've seen the most necessary need for use of two tones & horn was for a middle aged lady on the crawling commute into London on the dual lane A316, where all but her had pulled to either side to form the corridor, it looked as though she was going to use that corridor as she started moving into the gap until the ambulance used both to signal that they now right behind her. Boy did she jump and managed to then move to her right against the central reservation to allow the ambulance past.

"The training about using bus lanes" - you mean, don't use them to undertake and only enter them if you can be sure that you're not going to be boxed in at the other end or encounter parked traffic in the bus lane? That training? I have completed 2 emergency driving courses, one for St John Ambulance and another when I joined the NHS, since the SJA didn't meet the NHS requirements, and in both courses we were advised against using bus lanes unless no alternative. I will say we were also advised against using aggressive and bullying driving, so the ambulance in this video is absolutely in the wrong, but I can understand them not risking using the bus lane.

I think that's what I'd probably have done, by the looks of it he didn't want to undertake the L car, thinking he may pull to the left during his undertake, but by showing his intent as you did, that would give the ambulance the green light to pass him. That being said, I wouldn't have thought a driving instructor would tell his pupil to do this (non standard hand signals) although in the scenario in this video, one would expect the ambulance driver would assume the L driver was being guided on how to react.

But it's not. The emergency vehicle should use the bus lane. The ambulance driver in the clip was wrong as the learner driver did get corrected and did a pretty good job of making clear he wasn't going to carry out further changes. Instead, the ambulance driver under stress shut down adaptive thinking and locked himself into the decision to barrel forward. This resulted in the aggressive use of the horn. Stress management and maintaining rational judgement and adaptable driving are essential for their job, and something went wrong with the driver in this instance, suggesting there is room for improvement. There is no money grabbing involved as regular drivers should not be crossing into this area. Incidentally, this does also apply to cycle lanes with a solid line.

It makes it clear to enforcement cameras that the vehicle is 'on a job', as if they are not on blue lights and enter a bus lane they can be fined. By my understanding it’s not allowed to make way for emergency vehicles in ways that would otherwise be in breach of traffic laws in Europe (at least in the EU, as basic traffic law is harmonised). Even further using the bus lane to make way in such a case would have a higher penalty in most countries. The emergency vehicle could use the bus lane if needed and so using the bus lane would hinder the emergency vehicle. If for some reason the driver of the emergency vehicle knows that the bus lane isn’t suitable for his needs (poor pavement, to small, etc.) the driver of the emergency vehicle could indicate he needs to pass by moving edge of the lane on the side passing is desired. You should then make way on the earliest possible save and legal place. In most cases you wouldn’t be fined, by a cop, if you do make way in a save manner that is in breach with the law, but enforcement cameras fines will hold up in court.

I'm a trained blue light driver and this is my assessment from the video. Not using the bus lane was correct from the instructor/learner. The driving wasn't perfect by either driver though. Yes the ambulance should have just used the bus lane which would be the easiest solution. Let's ignore the existence of the bus lane for arguments sake. The key to effective blue light driving is creating gaps in traffic to use and the emergency vehicle's position directly affects this. The clip starts at 00:55. The road appears quiet and visibility seems decent with the road damp/wet. I would assume it is a 30 limit. The ambulance would have had an opportunity to go fully offside (but not overtake until satisfied). This forces the oncoming car to stop and hopefully encourage the learner to also stop, creating a gap the ambulance can use. If the learner/oncoming car closes that gap the ambulance can still go back behind the learner safely as they have not proceeded past until satisfied. The driving is not particularly positive from the ambulance. In the position it used even if the learner did stop the oncoming car would likely have closed the gap as the ambulance has not put itself in a clear position. Again, at 1:01 both the ambulance and the learner had more opportunities to be positive. The ambulance could have gone fully offside, indicating that the learner should stop and if the learner had stopped there would have been space for the ambulance to use as again, it would force the oncoming car to stop. Both drivers could have done better here. Exactly the same situation at 1:10 from both drivers. Learner could have stopped. Ambulance could have been more positive. I think the instructor got too focused on simply not using the bus lane and not just treating the solid white line of the bus lane as the end of the normal carriageway. If that had been a pavement instead I assume the instructor would have stopped in all of the above situations as that would be the normal thing to do. Both could and should have done better. The original response to the complaint seemed to suggest that the learner should have stopped. I did wonder about that, but even if that was one option, the ambulance using the bus lane would have been a far more logical and safer approach. Given that it was a learner, even with an instructor present, hanging behind the learner vehicle in the manner that the ambulance did felt intimidating. I thought instructor and learner did well in the circumstances. It's a while since I've seen one of those blue light videos and it's good to see that we're encouraged to form a Rettungsgasse now. This should be in the Highway Code (although I will concede that Emergency Corridor is a better term in the UK) and it needs training into drivers, possibly with legislation and enforcement as in Germany. Ultimately, it was clear publicity, training and enforcement that got the German drivers to do this. It wasn't always done. In fact, the whole dealing with emergency vehicles thing should not be left to the chance that someone stumbles across the information.

The emergency corridor is something that needs to be educated into most drivers. Not so much how to create one but how to be prepared to create one. I see too many drivers stop too close to the vehicle in front making it almost impossible to move until the vehicles in front have moved. Eventually you reach a point where nobody moves as the one that needs to move is too far away to realise it. But then once the corridor is created, drivers need to stay there and not move back to allow other emergency vehicles to use that corridor. I remember once seeing a car in front move back into the open space only to then hold up a fire engine for 5 minutes while they tried to reverse (badly) back into the space where they were

As a medic from the US some of my input wouldn't be applicable, however I think there are some important points of advice that I think would translate fairly universally: First, always follow your local guidelines of the expectations on yielding to emergency vehicles of course. That consistency is what helps us to travel safely and expediently without having to guess what your next move will be. Second, be aware of the traffic around you and how they are yielding. If everybody but you is yielding incorrectly (say, moving to the bus lane to yield), it could very well be the most reasonable action to follow their mistakes rather than steadfastly adhere to yielding guidelines and in turn cause both lanes to be blocked. Third and quite importantly: ALWAYS signal your intentions clearly. Use your indicators to communicate where you intend to yield. Once you are in place and intend to yield until the emergency vehicle passes, activate your hazards and keep your wheels angled straight or away from the emergency vehicles presumed path. The hazard lights and angling of your wheels are major indicators to us of your intentions, as many of us are conditioned to cautiously monitor the angle of motorists' wheels as a sure-fire indicator that they might intend to cut out in front of us suddenly.
@ianmason.
@ianmason. 11 ай бұрын
The use of hazard lights isn't something that would be recommended in the UK. One _may_ continue to keep an indicator on once you've moved over and stopped but this is "custom and practice", not an officially sanctioned way of indicating that you're intending to stay at the side of the road until the ES vehicle(s) have passed.

Also, the first step when you hear a siren is to figure out where it's coming from: Radio off, windows down, etc. 2nd step is to figure out if you *are* in their way (or if you *could* be, in case you can _not_ quickly determine where they are coming from). 3rd step is to check if there is any (safe) place to pull over that gets you *out of their way* (hence step 2). 4th step is execute.

I am a HGV driver I have had a situation very much like this in London and I stayed out of the Bus Lane slowed my truck to a stop in my running lane making the ambulance decide if he wanted to just sit behind me or use the Bus Lane but you do find alot of the time some Emergency Service Vehicles are very aggressive trying to push you into places that would be considered Illegal/Traffic Offence . Now I am experienced driver (not perfect by any means) so I will make them go around me but my Wife only having her licence for about a year would have gone into the bus lane for fear of getting in trouble for not moving even though I do try to educate her in the correct ways (or at least the ways I believe are correct)

I'm thinking the sportage at 2:00 is an unmarked police car because it has the double fins on the roof which is usually a telltale sign, I also know Merpol 100% have these vehicles as unmarked as they have a few in my town :) In the first clip the learner did 100% right in my opinion - it's a bus lane. Same as a red light - if you get caught you pay. A little off topic but I am a PHV driver and I am allowed to use bus lanes in Merseyside, however in Manchester we aren't and I got caught out on an unfamiliar drop-off point, safe to say I wasn't happy.

I had an ambulance come up behind me on my mock test. There was no bus lane but I was driving in heavy rush hour traffic which was crawling in both directions. There was no way for the ambulance to get through so after a few seconds my instructor told me to mount the curb, which I did (and many others ahead of me did too). That was over 30 years ago though, I wouldn't do that nowadays! I asked my instructor afterwards if that really was the right thing to have done and he replied "you know, I'm not sure" 😲 A couple of weeks later I passed my test first time, thankfully not having encountered any emergency vehicles whilst doing it!

@@davidocall I put it squarely 100% fault on the ambulance for scaring the learning into making their intentions unclear. The aggressive ambulance driving only made the situation worse by panicing the learner, with sirens, bull horn and tailgating... That is bullying behaviour. I agree with Goblin, If the ambulance kept back, turned off the sirens, indicated left and pulled into the bus lane, and then maybe chirped the sirens to let the driver in front know that they're still there but now repositioned on the inside. The driver in front would be able to tell where the ambulance is and could take an educated guess what the ambulance is doing... not like the driver can use the bus lane anyway still. There is a safer way to go about everything in this video by that ambulance, that is completely wrong. The van in front of me pulled across into the bus lane and blocked my path with the tail end of his van so I had to stop. He then started aggressively pointing at the ambulance and swearing at me as he assumed I had not seen it. The ambulance then had to go into oncoming traffic to get round me. Must comment and agree with what many have already said. I've been in situations like this with an active bus lane and an emergency vehicle coming up behind. It's very easy to panic and stray into the bus lane ( or cross the stop line at a red light) but I've held my ground and waited for a safe area to allow them past. As several have said, once you're seen by the bus lane/ red light camera, there's virtually zero chance of getting that PCN dropped! The emergency vehicles will have exemption, the rest of us won't! I agree, the ambulance driver did seem aggressive and could've/should've used the bus lane instead of intimidating the learner. Well done to the instructor for keeping things calm and giving great advice to his student. Really useful training video too, think if more motorists watched that, there might be a little less PCN fines going to the money grabbing councils! Thanks for your usual sound advice Ashley 👍

The change of tone using the Bull Horn falls nothing short of bullying, this behaviour directed towards a learner driver is unforgivable. The Ambulance had ample opportunity to use the bus lane. Interesting one and while the ambulance could’ve used the bus lane I wonder if the driver was reluctant to due to the vehicle being a driving school car and not knowing the experience if the pupil. There appeared to be some movement towards the bus lane from the pupil so maybe the ambulance driver thought the risk was to high to pass in the bus lane and was waiting for the instructor to advise the pupil to slow down to facilitate a pass near the start of the clip? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way the horn use was totally inappropriate and, while I understand the immense pressure the crews are under to attend patients and also get them the treatment they need, using the horn in that manner only serves to increase pressure on others around them which could, in a worst case scenario, increase the amount of time it will take the crew to attend and treat the patient. They, more than anyone else, should know patience is vital on the roads for everyone, including their patients
