Try Indian savory oats! Check Vegan Richa for a good recipe. Incorporating the spices in the cooking of the oats itself should help the taste

I love savory oats. I usually cook the oats in vegetable broth with miso paste, sesame oil and soy sauce. My favorite toppings are mushrooms, egg, spinach, grape tomatoes and avocados.

I also prefer sweet oats over savory, but maybe trying savory with baked oatmeal would work better?

I love savory oats! As to the texture, I make my oats not as a meal, but as a rice. Basically you change the proportion - like 1 cup rolled oats to 3/4 cup water (and water or stock is best, I think), You boil the water, then add the oats, stir through, then cover, turn off the heat and let sit for five minutes, then fluff. Or, frankly, google how to make oats like rice - I know people who do it much better than I do!

Steel cut oats are also great to make like rice.

i want to try savory oats but i feel like the texture would weird me out?? i generally associate savory/spicy foods to not have a super soft texture, so i feel like it would be strange

you should try some savory oats recipes from Maddie Lymburner's always oats cookbook! Her Mexican savory oats uses salsa, black beans, corn, avocado, and tortilla chips so the textures work really well together!

yaknow i never thought about the fact that technically oatmeal is just another type of grain, some people eat rice for breakfast/quinoa/buckwheat and were conditioned to only think of oatmeal as a sweet meal😅 so interesting honestly bc there's no reason for it!

Maybe it would work better if you tried recipes that would normally use mashed potatoes instead of rice. I’m in the same camp though, I’ve avoided savory oats but I’m not opposed to trying it.

I agree with your "I would rather have rice" sentiment in those bowls. The toppings looked delicious, though. I love fruity oatmeal, but savory oats are not for me. The texture is just not what I want in a savory dish. I think the pizza crust could have been improved to a place where you enjoyed it more because I love baking with oat flour, but honestly, "no" to savory oat bowls for me, too. Thank you for trying it for us, though :)
