@historyguy5942

Certainly, “The Chain” was something that kept the band together, however, the song itself is literally about the difficulties that Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were having in their long-term romantic relationship (and the chain keeping the two of them together). The lyrics in the first part of the song tell the story....””Damn the your love, damn your lies...” Buckingham and Nicks were together and put out at least one album together prior to their both joining this, the third rendition of Fleetwood Mac.

Thanks guys! This IS Fleetwood Mac! All 5 members of the band contributed to the writing of this song and the album while every member was suffering from a breakup. Lindsey and Stevie were breaking up, Christine and John were breaking up. And Mick and his wife were breaking up. But they had all promised that the BAND would stay together, as if chained together. Their promise was rewarded with one of the most important albums ever recorded. Spent 31 weeks at number one, won the Grammy for album of the year and one of the most successful, selling 40 million copies, 10 million in the first month. And this song is ranked in my top 10... that bass drop in the middle....followed by Lindsey's blistering guitar outro. Sheer 70s perfection!

Fleetwood Mac wore their relationship issues on their sleeves. They put it all out front and center and carved a niche for themselves with solid lyrics, great instrumentals and incredible vocals. This is one band where you hear a song like this and you know it is personal, not some made up story.

When you think of how messy it was back then...what would it have been if it were during the age of social media. I don't know what happened these last 20 years or so, but we do not have the kind of musical artists we used to have. When I saw Fleetwood Mac I was amazed at how good everyone in that band is, including John McVie on bass and Mick Fleetwood on drums. Those guys are underrated in their effect on rock history, playing together since the 1960s and producing memorable music no matter who was in the band. A wonderful group to explore, try Hypnotized with Bob Welch on guitar and vocals. Awesome band in all its eras. Enjoy! 🎸

The reason this album was so successful is the turmoil between two couples in the band. It got real nasty with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as well as John and Christy McVie. They slammed each other in 90% of this album. Christy wrote the song “ You make lovin’ fun. But it wasn’t about John… it was written to one of the Stage hands doing the lighting! Talk about a slam.

The relationships within the band that were rocky at best, are behind the song. The slow build is what they would experience in their love for each other, the rising beat replicates their love as it turns to passion, then the slowing down represents their passion as it subsides, and is replaced by the lies and cheating going on in their relationships. If you listen to the entire music in one sitting without pausing, the pauses and slowing of the beat creates an anxiety for the listener wondering what is going to happen next. This is exactly the type of emotion the band members were experiencing with their love relationships within the band. It is really quite remarkable that they were able to create this music with the absence of music at times throughout the tune; the pauses and stops, the change-ups, Think about that... wow! When you think to yourself, "What's about to happen now?" THAT is exactly what people in a failing relationship think, and say... "What's happening?" That is what they were going for, teasing the listener, to wonder that... How they created the music to reflect their lives at that time, not just the words, not just the instruments but the arrangement too.

When wondering what genre--you'd probably be fairest saying 'pop rock,' but even the rightest thing feels wrong because back then almost no one was as obsessed with labelling and comparing things as they are today--we just accepted what was happening at that time. It was all contemporary in that way. Contemporary was just constantly in motion. So from the The Everly Brothers through The Beatles, then Led Zeppelin and Queen, and then Kansas and Boston, and then Guns'N Roses and Van Halen, it was the songs that were being played on the relatively small number of largely independent radio stations every city had. Songs back then had to win over a lot of Program Directors to go national.

Fleetwood Mac is a very deep hole, with no disappointments.. seen them live in Cincinnati, they had the UC marching band come it to do Tusk. You need to see the "tusk" live video... spectacular...

Doing some Re-watching- 🙂I know this was around a year ago, and I watched and commented then too. Y’all just gotta watch their reunion/ concert called THE DANCE. It almost didn’t happen due to their raw emotions, still years later. They pulled it together and it was FANTASTIC! Best concert of theirs,in my opinion..✋🏼-They looked and SOUNDED better than ever..There were relationships within the band.. and let’s just say a lot of ups and downs/drama. If (hopefully when) you watch THE DANCE concert, you can literally see the emotions in their faces.. All real and all raw- even if you just watch on your own time.. do so. You won’t regret it! Those (Stevie stares will get cha!) A marching band even comes in and joins then later in the concert. Phenomenal! Hope y’all see this comment and watch the concert-🤞🏼🤞🏼❤️✨

They were the "It" group of the time. I remember everyone asking if their next hit was out. It couldn't come fast enough, they were so good.

Great song. My favourite Fleetwood Mac song I think. That bass solo! Then the guitar solo that comes out of it! They were on fire 🔥

I think of the first part as Swamp Rock and Asia I think the "chant" feel you were talking about is the Heartbeat feel of the song. It makes your heart race to match the beat of the song.

They loop the fast part of this song as the theme music for formula 1 here in the UK. You should listen to the whole Rumours album even if you don't react to it. What made this band unique is that two of the members are American and the rest are British which gives them a mid Atlantic sound.

This song draws you in And blows you back out the other side My brother bought me the 8-track of this album...... Yeah that's right I'm that old I wore it out . Christie Mcvie is often overlooked but she's a Jem " You make loving fun " or " Don't Stop" ✌️♥️

😆 @Zeb Johnson...Same here! I wore out two albums on 8 track....Rumors twice and my beloved Skynyrd's One More From the Road which I had to replace 4 times (and still have number 4 packed carefully away). Lord we were blessed have come of age in the 70s!!! They were a magical time in music! No other decade can touch our music. Period. ❤😃

I've seen several reactors talking about the country sound at the beginning, but when this was released the sound of country and blue grass was very different as to now so I didn't hear the country style when it was released. But I can see how it connects to that genre now. Great reaction ya'll

I have this album and it's a classic from a band at each others throats most of the time but that's what made it so good as a lot of their songs were about each other❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
