Right now international students are banned from entering Japan. Priority is given to Olympic athletes. They can even come to Japan without 2 weeks quarantine. As an international student i wake up every day at 2 am and study until 10 or 12. It’s very tiring. Also because of a ban I couldn’t choose the subjects I wanted to study, as other students who are currently in Japan. Please rise the awareness of international students situation. We have to fight for our right to study in 2021. It’s ridiculous

International students enrolled in universities and language schools are still not allowed to enter japan for over a year now. It would be great if you could interview them to know their struggle of attending online classes in different time zone. Hope you can raise awareness about their situation.

Thousands of us international students are being prevented from entering Japan currently. Even though we hold Certificates of Eligibility from the government, we are not able to obtain visas due to the border being closed. Yet several hundred thousand Olympians and family members are being prioritized over us.

I arrived in Japan on New Year eve of 2020, barely scraping by in the last couple days that the border was temporarily open for international students. I feel so sad for students who didn’t get their visas and now can’t enter! Absolutely terrible and hope that it gets better for them....

As they briefly talked about, new international students are not allowed into japan and haven’t been allowed into japan since march 2020, with the exception of a few MEXT students who got to enter back in October 2020. My fellow classmates and i are taking our classes via zoom at 2am-10am in our home country every night and have done so now for quite a while. The Japanese government are now gonna allow nearly 200k athletes, their families and media in to the country for the olympics and they wont even have to quarantine! There are so many of my fellow students who are currently renting apartments in japan and cant even live in them cause they are stuck in their home country, we are applicable for scholarships but cant get them until we get to japan, some even sold their belongings and got ready to move to japan and have no clue on when they get to do so. Most of us international students, who enrolled during fall 2020 or spring 2021 have not been able to enter japan, nor do we have ANY information about when we get to enter japan, we are living in a hellish limbo!

Actually as International student who should come to Japan in April 2021, I have to wait the lift border of Japan and follow my online classroom by waking up at 1AM (Switzerland) We are few thousand people (also spouses and workers) in the same/really bad situation and a lot of them are waiting many months. It becomes worse when we know that 200,000 olympic related people could go to Japan, even without strict quarantine. But others like us (long-term visa) can't not and have no news !

It’s amazing most of these people are not from English speaking countries yet their English is quite amazing.

Not only international students are being denied entry into Japan, but so are families. I have been working in Japan since 2019. The last time I saw my husband was January 2020. Japan will not issue dependent visas, unless it’s a literal life or death situation. Why do Olympic athletes get priority to enter Japan, but families can remain separated.

Only Japan among G7 countries banned International students. However 200.000+ staff, athletes, affiliate with olympic can enter with barely any measure to prevent virus infection!

I'm doing my PhD in Tokyo at Keio University. It is a great environment to study, I really like my university. It was awfully difficult to come here because of COVID19. Thanks for talking about us, international students in Japan ! :)

Did you know that foreign students with new visas aren't allowed to enter Japan? It's been like that since the end of December 2020, and the Japanese government isn't providing any help or any timeline for opening. There are hundreds of students locked out of Japan who are homeless due to the border closure. All of them have to participate in class via online video call, and have to wake up at ungodly hours in order to catch class. Please spread more awareness about this issue!

I wish I could be in Japan right now following my classes. But unfortunately, international students are still being denied the entry to Japan. I am from Europe so in order to follow my Japanese classes I have to wake up the middle of the night (from 2 am to 7 am) to follow the classes. This situation is getting worse and worse since we don’t have a lot of visibility by the media. We would really appreciate if you could help us raise awareness about our situation!!

It’s ridiculous that they are not able to come back to Japan after going home and visiting their families. Atleast make them get tested and quarantine for two weeks upon their return.

I have worked for a Japanese company for 7 years, so I envy the opportunity for them to study in Japan.

For information, international students are not forbiden to enter the country for this summer normally. Since the reason of entering the country is educational it doesn't actually cause a problem. I'm 17 and am going in Japan in August for 10 month, I will live in a japanese family and go to a normal japanese high school as a international student. The organisation that allows me to leave are PIE ( French one ) and WYS ( japanese one ). I also know that students like me already succeed to go to Japan even in the beginning of the crisis in 2020.

Sadly for thousands being an international student means being anxious, depressed and unheard. Due to the sudden entry ban japan applied in january 2021 international students are stranded and being kept in limbo. Many of us already have their documents prepared (including certificate of enrollment and CoE, sent by the japanese embassies), received scholarships or paid full tuition themselves. We cancelled our appartments and jobs, packed our stuff. Since January there has been absolutely no communication from Japanese officals. Instead entry permit has been granted for olympic athletes (and their familes, sponsors etc.) and baseball players (no quarantine). Meanwhile lovers/families are not allowed to see each other, foreign workers can't start their jobs and students can't continue their education. I, myself can't search for job meanwhile bc we don't have any timeline given to us and haven't seen my boyfriend for over 1 year. I am happy for the foreign students who made it japan before the ban though. I hope they will collect good experiences and accomplish their goals. Also thank you very much for interviewing many different people with diverse backgrounds. Your still one of my favourite youtube channels. I just wished you would have also given us some attention, we have been trying to reach out to you for weeks.

As an international student in Japan, who could come in October 2019, after the pandemic started, life really got tough, mentally. But, I try to manage myself, and keep good health and social interaction with friends and family. It helps. As for the students who couldn't come, I have also several friends in this situation. I could only pray for them and to Japan to open borders. But honestly, didn't know about the rent payment, that is terrible.

Those are the ones who could enter the country. My boyfriend, who was supposed to start study in Japan in May, after agreed on doing a quarantine, enter with two negative PCR and to control and inform their daily temperature, are left behind by Japanese government. Olympic is a priority, not studying. He is having class at 2 a.m in Spain and some professors told him and his classmates that if they can not enter the country in May, they have to drop some subjects. He only have the opportunity to go to Japan 6 months to study, he earned his place, he worked a lot, and as the same as he, other people. Please Asian boss, help us to rise awareness of the students who could not enter and are still fighting to enter as soon as possible... Studying is not tourism!

Since January, no new students are allowed to enter. Many students have a valid CoE in hand, have quit their jobs, moved out of their apartments in preparation for the start of their classes. Now we have to get up at 2am to attend our classes via Zoom and somehow try to get by. This whole situation is so frustrating! Meanwhile, people associated with the Olympics or pro athletes allowed to enter, even without the strict quarantine rules that are imposed on the few people that are allowed to enter country. Talk about being unfair!

international Student are not allowed to enter Japan since last year!! A lot of people suffering beacuse of this, they put their life on it selling their stuff, loan in bank even quit their job for hopefully can enter Japan. But non of us get some information from Japan Govt when we can enter Japan. Almost all media in Japan barely raise this issue. PLEASE Asian Boss raise awareness about this issue, it can help us mentally too.

From United States currently studying in Europe. I think it's quite hypocritical that Japanese students are allowed to come here to study and go back whenever they are done with no issue, but students from other countries aren't allowed to go to Japan no matter what steps you've taken.

I’ll let you know what it’s like: going to school online due to not being able to enter the country at 8 pm my time and getting done at 5 am, and going to sleep then. I’ve had to flip my enter living situation due to this.

My biggest regret is to not study in Japan when I was younger. Now I'm not in the age bracket of the usual international students . So if you want to, go experience it when your young & not live with regret.

The very reason why people want to study and work in Japan is that they want to see, learn and experience the technology advancement but when it comes to medicine, psychology and other courses related to human development I don't think Japan is capable.

Not only students but workers, researchers etc. with valid certificate of eligibility cannot apply for visa to come to Japan and start their employment. I’ve been waiting for 6 months to start my postdoc position in Japan. I cannot apply for another job while waiting with the hope of japan opening its border any time. This situation is harming me financially and mentally. At least they should give us a time frame about when exactly they can open up so that we can find other options while we wait. It’s the same for students: if they know when Japan is planning to open up, they can plan accordingly or choose other countries to study.

The one girl was really incorrect with how she portrayed restaurants refusing foreigners. It is a very rare occasion when that will happen. You might get told no at a restaurant due to them thinking there will be a language barrier that will not allow them to provide the level of service that they strive for, and it will be difficult to serve you and your group. If you have a person in your group that speaks Japanese fluently this will not be a problem. Also when they don’t speak another language well all they can say is no and not give you the reason why so it comes off as a bad thing. It has nothing to do with discrimination like she made it out to be, and everything to do with language barriers.

I've been waiting for over a year to start my studies in Japan, but they are allowing to let 200'00 athletes with no quarantine to come in. I've even been fully vaccinated and am willing to fully comply with their strict quarantine rules, but I still cannot enter. I'm stuck with doing my classes online in my home country, and burning through my savings which was meant for accommodation and tuition in Japan. We expected that we was going to be able to come after the 2nd state of emergency ended on 21st March 2021 but that wasn't the case.

I'm an international student who couldn't come to Japan because I was banned from entering. I prepared for the exchange for many years, got myself JLPT N1, saved money. I had an apartment and everything ready. 1 week before my flight should go, they dropped the whole exchange. In 2020 Then they took their sweet sweet time until the end of May to drop the exchange for 2021 as well. I was supposed to be a student and make an internship at the university to become a teacher. My future is very uncertain now because I still can't come to Japan. And I had to change my whole master's thesis subject because I can't do research in Japan. I have been preparing for this exchange for years, as well as planned on moving there to teach at the university and now I'm directionless.

I don't know when this was filmed but students are banned from entering Japan right now. For the third time now, my study abroad attempts have been cancelled due to their policies and COVID-19. Studying abroad in Japan has been a long time dream of mine, and I was even planning on pushing my graduation back for it, but I would have to wait a whole year, forfeiting my chance to get a better job in the meantime due to not holding a degree that I should be getting next week now. My future career was depending on my experience and immersion during studying there. Now I don't know what to do except go to a language school, but even that lacks the full academic experience I was looking forward to. I am really frustrated, especially because Japan only seems to care about Olympians rather than people trying to work and study, which in my opinion seem to be more important than sport contests. It's very strange to me that they were so fast and persistent to make policy changes for the Olympics when their country culturally holds so much importance when it comes to education, academics, and work. I understand that the Olympics bring in a lot of money, but so do international students and workers. I've lost a lot of time, energy, and money (and university grants!) that I invested into trying to study abroad for two years now, and I know a lot of other students who lost thousands of dollars being booted out of the country when the pandemic hit. I respect that they are trying to prevent the spread of the virus, but it's hypocritical and nonsensical to allow athletes in from around the world but not students and workers who are actually trying to leave a positive, long-term impact on Japan and build connections through their hard work. I'm personally trying to go to graduate school and teach over there, but my future is now murky due to the restrictions in place. All of my plans are scattered now. I hope that we can move towards safely reopening the borders soon, not to tourists yet, but to students.

Hi, I am from Turkey. In the fall of 2020, I passed the first stage of MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship as the leading candidate from my country only to be rejected 4-5 months later via an email which had 2 sentences in it saying that I have been rejected. I had applied for medical school. The second and third candidates passed the secondary elimination with different programme choices. I was really sad for a couple of months but now I kind of feel better better because everyone is in a tight situation and no one knows what is going on. I wouldn't have been able to study with a clear mind like that. With that being said, good luck to all international students, I am praying for all of you!

I applied to study in Hokkaido this fall, but I’m scared that the ban won’t be lifted. I’m vaccinated so I hope they can make exceptions.

Ok, I'm still even now really surprised that your schedule at a Japanese university (at least the ones they've been going to) is soo free and you can even work part time to cover the cost of it if needed and still have enough to travel. Now THAT would be damn awesome to do. That's got to be one of the huge perks, even if there aren't as much reinforcement lessons as you might like or would've expected after coming soo far. I'll have to remember this if I do go. Pleeease let the Visa situation change soon. It's creating waaay too much uncertainty. And yes, I do looove Japanese pop culture very much and that is what first introduced me to the country in the first place in a more meaningful sense, but through that I have go on to learn as much about Japan in my own ways as best I can over the past 6-ish years and now have an equally huuuge respect for both. And that is why I wan to go and study there any any form I still can or even work there in a job that best reflects my love for this country. Be it in the entertainment media industry, or the more traditional arts and customs.
