A friendly reminder to everyone: you can like kpop, kdramas and still be self-conscious about the korean society, don't be ashamed if your dream is to be there. This also applies to japan. Let people experience on their own, why do you have to bash someone from their interests, you are not his/her parent.
@chris1z142

Because they don’t like the country they like a fantasy. This is even more applicable to anime and Japan though. It’s incredibly immature and irresponsible for adults of any age to be immigrating to live out a fantasy. It’s definitely deserves to be frowned upon when those adults put on an expectation for others to behave like people they see in media.

@@chris1z142 Meh not really. Yeah the media introduced me to Korea but afterwards I was enthralled by the culinary world there. That of course led me to learn more about the culture and economy, etc. In the end I speak for myself but I won't let myself get bashed when I became knowledgeable about a country I'm studying in. It's good that they get a reality check when they come here but that's more than enough. It's sad that you or anyone would go out of their way to shun someone rather than educate.

As an international masters student in Korea, I can attest to so many parts of the interview. About loneliness and homesickness, the disappointment of not being able to have to have the full experience of school and travel, the pressure of having to prove your worth when the language makes everything so much harder for us. Also I'm surprised they said the teachers were more approachable here compared to their home country. Think the hierarchical culture in Korea is important everywhere, more so in an academic context. The Asian lady at 3:05 is spot on about what it's like to be an Asian foreigner in a more developed Asian country. The locals judge you harsher, because you look kind of like a local but have more difficulty conforming with the culture, your own country might be stereotyped as "poor" hence people look down on you, plus you don't have the white privilege to be considered "beautiful" and get away with occasionally being clueless.
@Marko50000
@Marko50000 3 жыл бұрын
In a short term i think it's definitely easier to be white than asian (Korea & Japan etc). But on a long-term, looking like a local have it benefits. I feel like white people would always be considered an "outsider" etc whereas asians can fit in more easily. However, i think this mostly apply to asians who were born and raised in western countries bc they mostly have academic degrees whereas asians coming from native countries mostly come to seek manual jobs and stay poor etc..

@@Marko50000 Asian foreigners are also considered as outsiders. Idk if you are asian or not but when I came to Korea as a Japanese, it was not easy because people didn’t really trust me. Some Koreans were uncomfortable when I said that I was Japanese. Of course in the street, you not gonna have weird look on you because they will assume that you are local, but when you start to speak, they definitely won’t see you as one of them. Of course it’s the same in Japan so it’s pretty cheeky of saying that Koreans only value others Koreans... And for my white friend, it was not different of me. I felt like we both were treated the same, she just receive more compliment for her exotic look of course, but in work area we both were treated as total outsider, which is understandable too.

I had the privilege of studying Korean at Yonsei last year. I had limited knowledge on Korean culture and I didn’t really listen to k-pop or watch Korean dramas so I was pretty lost when I first got there. But let me tell you, I left loving everything about the culture. But what really made it an amazing experience was the people I met along the way. Oh and the food is so so good. It really is a cool place to study abroad so if you get the chance, go for it! Edit: Oh also, I never had anyone treat me differently because I was a student. If anything my interactions with others were pretty positive after (and before) they found out that I was there to study.

About the "harsh" korean education system, it's only up until highschool. In korean culture, the adults want their children to attend excellent universities (for both the child's future and for their public image). And since everyone thinks the same way, the competition for uni entry exams is harsh and demanding. That's why people push the children to study as hard as possible in highschool, and when they finally enter the uni, it's party-time basically. That's why international uni (and higher) students dont really see the harsh education system (which is the cause of high suicide rates amongst students)
