The "history expert" UBI hired is graduated from a liberal college in Hawai'i. If they actually wanted to show historical accuracy, they should've hired an actual Japanese native history expert from Kyoto University or other prestigious Japanese universities. Not from fucking Hawai'i. 😂

I looked up Ms. Schmidt-Hori's academic accomplishments on Dartmouth University's website, and she is not a scholar of Japanese history. She is a scholar of literature. Her published works are on gender themes in old Japanese tales. Her most significant academic work was on the hero Yoshitsune being effeminate. Other academics were writing similar things decades before she did, though, so I would hardly consider her to be a substantive scholar. Why did Ubisoft hire her? It would have been so easy to find dozens of better qualified academics, actual historians, to help in the development of this game.

It's odd to me how an African slave who was brought in as a gift to Nobunaga Oda is the savior of the Japanese people and talks about protecting his people and stuff (from what I can tell from these trailers). The whole premise of this game is racist towards Japanese people and insulting to their culture. He was a retainer from all we know, not a samurai. There is next to nothing written about him in Japanese history, which indicates that he did nothing noteworthy or heroic. A stark contrast to him is another foreigner, called Adam Williams. He was actually made a samurai for his service to the Japanese back in his time. So we all know what this game is really about.

Can't wait for Assassins Creed: Kongo-Wara rebellion where the protagonist is a white dude in Africa to be inclusive. Sign me up ubisoft!

I am half-japanese, half-french and grew up in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan for most of my teenage-to-adult life with the exception of having done my post-graduate studies abroad. I was made fun of for being half-japanese, ostracised by my peers for having too white of a skin colour, being "fat" for having a larger bust and wider hips than my native Japanese female counterparts. I do understand the inherent xenophobia in Japan, and it's not entirely their fault as they were culturally used to being a homogenous civiliisation that was militarily forced to (by the Han Chinese under Kublai Khan, later, U.S. Military) open themselves to the rest of the world. That being said, there is no racism here when Japanese are calling out Yasuke's status as a definite Samurai. There is NO possible way he'd ever gain such a status. No non-Japanese person ever could attain, or would! This is the equivalent of stating a non-Indian (from India) person could become a Brahmin (highest caste in their feudal system) or a Kshatriya (Samurai class equivalent). At best, Yasuke was hired as a servant to Nobunaga more as a curiosity, than an actual Retainer and ultimately - in some sources - he was eventually given back to the Jesuit Missionaries that sold him (into service, as Yasuke was already a freed slave before) to Nobunaga in the first place. He was a unique individual in a unique period of feudal Japanese history and it's okay for a videogame to take creative liberties with history, as it is fictional, to countries that are more liberal and open to such a thing. The Japanese are VERY nationalistic and take pride in their history and thus revere it moreso than other cultures that exist.

A little Chinese history to put into context how ridiculous Ubisoft is. Marco Polo was a highly respected visitor in China. Not only did he have private audience with the emperor Kublai Khan, he was made the mayor of a town and later a provincial governor. Today, there are monuments and statues of Marco Polo in China. With that being said, does anybody think for a second Ubisoft would make an Assassin’s Creed game set in ancient China and have Marco Polo be the star? We all know the answer and truth be told it would be ridiculous. Maybe an interesting twist to bump into Marco Polo but that would be the end of it. To have Ubisoft make a game about Yasuke and make him into this hulking Samurai slaughtering Japanese people is cultural shaming and appropriation. Believe me, even if he were a full blown Samurai, which he never was, it would not have been allowed. This is Ubisoft telling Japan that they are racist and since they don’t elevate Yasuke to a prominent place like woke white people think he should be, they will revise Japanese culture and do it themselves.

A samurai is not something you can become in one generation. Samurai is not a job; it is a social position and a class. And it is closely related to the land, the people, and the family. It is not something that an outsider can suddenly acquire when it is almost impossible for even an ordinary Japanese person.
