December 2, 2021 - Professor Steve Tsang discusses the core tenets of “Xi Jinping Thought,” what they tell us about how China’s leadership thinks about its role in the world, and how the ideology shifted from a strategy of “peaceful rise” to one of “uninterrupted rise,” with Asia Society Switzerland's Nico Luchsinger. Interesting history that during the 1920-30's the Chinese Communist Party was calling for the independence of Taiwan - news to me.

Speechless... I learned so much. Referred to this by a new friend. I'm now a new subscriber with alerts. Such a great interview and fantastic, well thought out questions. I look forward to seeing what other golden nuggets you've uncovered in the past, and will uncover in the future. You are doing a fantastic job in building bridges to better understand cultures, and with that, making the world a better place. Thank you.

Interesting discussion. How 🇨🇳 will eventually resolves d succession issue will be interesting to see. I hope it will not be a replay of when Stalin died. Personally abolishing d 10 years limit is a mistake.

(Sarcasm alert) The USSR made its system immensely popular too.

Why does the speaker keep using the word efficient to describe Chinese government systems? Are we not seeing the blackouts? Are we not seeing the defaults? The appearance of efficiency is what’s going on, at the same time the reality of chaos

When I read Xi's speech on "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era", I found that it is just ordinary Bolsheviks style Leninism written in Chinese language. Xi may try to explain why he believes it is another version of the Asian way with the Western concept(東道西器), but in fact, it is just ideology from Europe translated in Asian terms. It's not special. It's not exceptional. It's just only a terribly ordinary, outdated, and dull version of Leninism.

Xi Jinping thought has several levels .. authoritarian control is a part...but it is also about setting a national direction to solve some of the very substantial structural and systemic problems which are abundant under the polished Chinese surface. If some of the soft qualities in the Chinese system are not improved it will be very difficult for China to realize the Chinese dream. This nation is still very far from having the mixture of competence and ways of operating as well as some of the older institutions in the west are. Dealing with simple task like infrastructure and mass production is no problem for China, but dealing with multilevel challenges like basic technological innovation, environmental problems, restructuring of institutions, education and training to higher skill-levels is difficult for China. It is not easy for such a closed system to reform itself. Xi Jinping thought has many qualities and set some necessary targets for the future. However, China ....a nation with a lack of critical thinking in many parts of society has an uphill struggle. Risk aversion and paying lip service to central directives makes real improvements in the national performance slow and often flawed and uncoordinated. I believe that many reforms of the political system will be necessary to realize the Chinese dream and that China may be very different from the visions in Xi Jinping thought. The future tends to be unpredictable.

How does sino-centric socialism differ from national socialism (Nazism) centered on the party and Xi?

This is so close to Russia under Putin, I have trouble identifying any difference at all. Perhaps only treatment of original Marxism is a bit different. For now.
