In the talk, Olivia Cheung present the main findings of The Political Thought of Xi Jinping, the new book she co-authored with Steve Tsang for Oxford University Press. She offer a contextualized interpretation of the meaning of Xi’s major doctrines and concepts on Chinese politics, economy, society, and foreign policy. It is argued that the vision of Xi Thought can be distilled into two core elements or ambitions. The first is to create “one state, one people, one ideology, one party, and one leader.” The second is to make China great again and better than any other country in the world. The presentation conclude with a discussion of China’s direction of travel under Xi and its implications for China and the world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Olivia Cheung is Research Fellow of the China Institute at SOAS University of London. She is the author of Factional-Ideological Conflicts in Chinese Politics: To the Left or to the Right? (Amsterdam University Press, 2023) and co-author of The Political Thought of Xi Jinping (Oxford University Press, 2024). Her current research project is on China’s Global Strategy. She previously taught at the University of Warwick, where she was Course Director for the MA in International Politics and East Asia. She obtained her DPhil at Oxford where she was a Swire Scholar and a Rhodes Scholar.

It appears that Xi Jinping thought is exactly the same as Deng Xiao Ping thought. Primacy of the party, economic strength and millitary development and finally social equality and thus order. This has always been the goal

From my personal perspective Mr.Xi Jin-Ping he has good intention to enhance Chinese youth self-confidence; his last character Ping 平 which expect the future generations from 95,00’s generations and etc. aim foreigners on the equal footing not like those fading old generations such as 50,60,70, perhaps some 80’s generations . He is wise statesman .

Thank you for this valuable research and storying of Xi Jinping's 'Political Thought', I look forward to pondering on this work. Especially given that the world now urgently needs an alternative world order to that of a dominant yet failing liberal democratic world order. My hope is that a Eurasian centric world order is appearing to Xi to be more compatible with his thoughts than a Sino centric world order. Unconditional acceptance of the CPC is not possible, hence also not compatible with Xi's thoughts; at least one principle condition is essential; that the party continues to serve and satisfy the people first and foremost. This after all is an essential component of democracy.

As anybody can tell when talking to any normal people in China, there is NO one ideology and NEVER will be. People will always believe what they want to believe. The only truth is, when you buy a chicken it will always be a chicken, but not a duck. One can never fool people on that, at least not the Chinese.

1. Xi is greatly saddened by the foreign countries' invasion in China and Chinese sufferings for very long time. He has strong will to make China great again so as to deter the intention of foreign invasion. In addition , Xi has the mission to straighten current " world order " which is mainly dominated by hegemony ( MIGHT IS RIGHT ). It would be very good news to the world if he can successfully implement this mission. 2. 。。、

Was Xi also saddened by being admitted to the WTO and gaining greater access to Western markets which has enriched his economy? How about all that direct foreign investment from the West as well as transfers of Western technology?

It is disingenuous to say that Xi Jinping's though originated in 2017 without considering the years that led to his formulation of the Chinese Dream. The pivotal change to Chinese worldview is when Obama -H.Clinton pivot to East Asia six years earlier in 2011 to put most of US military on numerous bases around China. It takes years to formulate a strategic views, and Xi was in the discussion within the Politburo for years on the US continually aggressive stance against China until he was elected President in 2013

Any government of China have to focus on compliance because the population is too massive to content. If there's not this aspect the China government just can't survive of the long term liberal view of the world. There would be chaos and factions and then multiple governments appearing... I don't know what's best for Chinese people maybe it's the solution maybe it's the problem but the focus should be on the less violence possible into any process. How much people die of bad conditions right now vs how many would just kill themselves for a fair trade of resources for the few in power. I think China, at least, in this regime, made the material condition less violent on an average. The next problem is the economy they will have to develop into a place where people live in good conditions and refuse to be cheap labour. They should think about moving hard on having cheap resources, another countries that could do like them and reinforce them industrial force and use the cheap labour in place to develop too while China is feeding the new techs and knowledge for moving production there. They will have to act like the US and promote cheap energy and industrial base and knowledge and foremost good material condition for everyone and development of proper infrastructures.

Had it not for BRI China economy cannot be sustainable today when the cycle of economy on the downturn and worst of all sanctions by powerful countries trying to protect their trade markets.. With a population of 1.4 billion, any drastic disruption of the economy would bring about unemployment and may create social disorders. That is why with Xi foresight, his thoughts of contributing common prosperity to other countries that could work on a fair and equal concensus for long term basis with guarantees success.. 😊😊😊❤❤❤

distorted explanation of Xi‘s thought. if you think it’s “china” centric and read Xi’s book at the same time, then i’m 100% this “China” is not today’s nation state China, but a concept or name of known-world by then(ancient era), or in today’s context it must be all mankind. you should not fool the people in this way.

Well i'm not sure that legislating childrem online gametime is an exercise in making ppl more loyal to the party. Same with cutting down extra curricular school activities. I mean, u don't need to be a scholar to see the benefits of such legislative actions and you cettainly don't need to be a Chinese party member to see how such actions are beneficial for the Chinese society. That's where i really question the level of analysis that's coming from this woman and her motivations to put such a negative spin on everything Xi jing ping is doing. U don't need to be a genius to figure that out.

The way I understand the CCP is in terms of Carl Schmitt's definition of politics as a distinction between friends and enemies. One reason why Marxism-Leninism was so successful for so long was that it created a mass political party based on a strict distinction between comrades and enemies This is the enduring value of Leninism to the CCP, a supranational party-society of comrades dedicated to national and international industrialization. Ideology is the "constitution" of a party dictatorship such as the CCP in China. Ideology serves as the foundation of the public life of the party-state. So to amend CCP Ideology is akin to amending the Constitution in America, it's very much a public i.e. political act, because it redefines the national friend-enemy distinction. In the last analysis, "socialism with Chinese characteristics" is equivalent to what Stalin called "socialism in one country" and what Hitler called "national socialism." Just as Deng has been interpreted as a neoliberal, one detects a certain fascism in Xi Jinping Thought which mirrors the fascism or totalism that has descended on the Western democracies.
