Great review! I was a huge fan of the Novablast 3 - but specifically the Novablast 3 LE. I was always surprised it didn't get more distinct attention from the regular 3 - the lighter mesh upper and the ankle flair were major plus points for me.

I just saw that that shoe existed as I was doing background research for these videos. I somehow missed that last summer. I’m hoping they also do a LE version of the NB4 for the summer as the upper on it is heavy like the OG upper on the NB3. The Achilles flare on the NB3 LE looks identical to the NB4. 👍🏻 I think it didn’t get much attention because it was missed by many. Only MetaEndurance really covered it. I guess it got lost in the 1,000,000 odd color way releases Asics does nearly weekly. ☹️

Thanks for adding in the comment about this being a good option for heel strikers. I find some that do reviews that are forefoot and mid foot strikers rate them on that kind of foot strike, whereas the majority of people (I think ) are heel strikers.

Thanks for highlighting wider platform in the forefoot! I have problems with Asics shoes where they are heavily tapered on big toe and there is not enough width for my big toe to spring off. It always feels like it falls off the shoe to the side before I finish my toe off. I do much better in wider platform like in Ride 15 or Speed 3. Unfortunately, I have a very slim leg with low instep so I feel that I fit better in the "clown shoes" build of Novablast 3 and with Novablast 4's instep being pushed slightly more towards forefoot my feet will slide too far down the shoe. Of course I might be wrong but the instep looks more like in Nimbus 25 rather than Novablast 3. I'll take a look at Novablast 4 when I go through my rotation but I just wanted to thank you for this in-depth analysis. Cheers! :)

Ya, you are going to need to try this one on. As I said in the video I believe the last is the same between the shoes but the constitution is different so the NB3 feels a bit longer. However the NB4 does have a more generous toe box volume and the midsole forefoot almost has “outriggers” which may help you too. I do find the toe off in the NB4 to be very smooth and easy. Something I normally struggle with on max cushion and overly soft shoes. Thank you for the kind words! 🤙🏻

I was looking forward to one of your very thoughtful, detailed reviews. Asics seems to have improved this shoe with me in mind. I really like the sharper forefoot rocker, slightly firmer foam, and improved outsole. I was concerned because the Nimbus is a little too soft for me for longer runs. The upper looks more comfortable as well and they look like they copied the tongue from the Deviate Nitro 2, which is great. I liked v2 & v3 and I'm thinking of pairing this one with the Noosa Tri for days when I feel like I need a little more under foot. I really like where Asics is going this year.

This is the same foam as the Nimbus 25, but the sculpting of the midsole is very different. I think ther contributes to the feel of the foam considerably. The NB4 would be a great option for what you have in mind. It’s really the shoe in the Asics range best suited for that now. I also agree, Asics is heading in a very good direction in 2024…

@@SagasuRunning Thanks. However, I do wonder if it's completely the same foam. Whether it's FF Blast+, Fuel Cell, Fresh Foam X, or others, I think some of these companies may tweak the formulas depending on the particular use.

@@kuriosites They 100% do. Some going as far as moving a PEBAX based foam to a TPU for in another shoe and labeling it the same foam… there are many formulas and chemistries out there in the market place. In the case of FFBlast+ ECO… it does feel like FFBlast+ to me with a little “more” in it. Adding the bio material would change the chemistry of the foam so it make sense it feels different. So far I’m preferring it over vanilla FFBlast+ but I want to put some more miles into it to see how it holds up. That is where bio foams dial is they breakdown faster. 🤞🏻

I ran in Novablast OG. It was a very bouncy shoe with an extremely durable outsole. I retired them after 400 miles just because I wanted to put some other shoes into the rotation. I still have them in the trunk of my car as an emergency running shoe. Still enjoyable ride. I am glad, that NB4 is bouncier than NB3. I've got to try them on my feet. Trunk shoes! Nice. Where I grew up you needed trunk boots. Take them out and check them every once in a while as the extreme hot/cold cycles in a car can destroy the foam. I have ankle tendonitis. I have the gel nimbus 25. it's very comfortable and great for slow runs. Do you think the Novablast 4 is better for someone who has ankle tendonitis? Which do you recommend?
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 6 ай бұрын
Take this with a grain of salt given I’m not qualified to recommend anything here…. While the NB4 is lighter and has more foam wrapping around the heel and cradling the ankle area… it is a more flexible shoe with less stability due to the foam being softer (compared to the Nimbus 25/26) which could irritate your ankle tendinitis, especially if the pain is on the lateral side of your foot. I’d try it on first before buying it. If the Nimbus 25 is working for you I’d think the 26 would continue working for you. The ankle area of the shoe if well padded, supportive and the heel is much stiffer overall.

The novablast series from v1 to v3 is a tad long shoe, other reviewers had said that it would have been better to go half size down. Is it the same with v4? congrats and thanks!

I went TTS in the NB4, it doesn’t feel as long as the NB3 at all (which I also went TTS in but did think the shoe was too long). I did try on a half size down and found the fit too tight overall. The NB4 fits exactly the same as the SB for me as well. I wear a US Men’s size 9 in both.

Not sure how many km you have on the novablast. I find that annoying trampolin effect on the forefoot disappear for me around 400km mark. I do find the Novablast can be too soft and bulky at time but can pickup pace. I am considering trying the dynablast which has a lower to the ground compare to the novablast.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 8 ай бұрын
400km! I mean by that time the foam is so compacted that I would hope it would disappear. However, you shouldn’t need to grind a shoe down for 400km in order to make a “design feature” tolerable. The forefoot design in the NB3 was just off, all around.

Is it me or is the NB3 fit long? I like how nimble the NB3 is. I can’t wait what they’ll do with the Superblast. I think they should shave off 1 mm off the FF Turbo and 1 mm off the FF Blast+ on the SB 2 for a 43mm stack instead of 45mm. It would be even lighter and still retain its distinctive ride. I would add a small decoupled groove in the midfoot area just to give it some flex. I would keep the race feeling upper. I hope they don’t ruin it. It’s such a good shoe.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 8 ай бұрын
Yes, the NB3 did seem long, but spending sometime looking at it compared to the NB4 I think it was the construction of the NB3 and how the upper was joined to the midsole. The NB4 fits TTS for me, though I did try .5 size down and found it way too small. I like your thinking on the SB2… I’d personally like to see the stack height under 40mm… I don’t think the shoe needs all the stack at all.

I had to rewatch this to see what I might be missing. Did a 4 mile easy run today with a 4 on my left foot and 3 on my right. Really struggled to detect much, if any, difference. Maybe the 4 felt very slightly softer but obviously that one is a lot newer (27 miles to 148 for the 3) so is it just a new shoe effect. I then wonder have I just manipulated the 3 to fit my narrow feet. Initially I hated the 3 - just seemed very wide and a little long - so much so even got another 3 in a size down from my usual US 14/UK 13 - so a US 13/UK 12. I wore the US 13 for a bit and was "just about" long enough but not ideal so have now stopped using it. I pulled in the laces so much on the US 14 "3" that I had to cut them. I ought to do that on the 4 as well but never felt I needed to have such a "tug of war" contest with the laces on the 4 and indeed I don't find the 4 in a US 14 "too long". Although the 4 is far from a "narrow" shoe, it just seemed to fit my narrow feet a little bit more easily from the off. Today was just a "plod" and TBH that is the sort of run I mainly have always used Novablasts for. I never found the 1 unstable. I only reserve those sort of thoughts to the OG Prime X when trying to run a bumpy trail :) The 2 I just found "boring" and hardly used it. However these comments that have seen on other reviews that the 4 is "dumbed down" (or words to that effect) I just cannot understand.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 7 ай бұрын
Because of this comment… I put a NB3 on one foot and a NB4 on the other and walked around my office for about 15mins (I can’t bring myself to ever run in the NB3 again…). Immediately I notice they the NB4 is more lively, which is a combo of the less mushy foam and the exaggerated rocker. The NB4 also feels more stable, it feels wider (especially in the forefoot) with the foam collapsing much less… though oddly the NB3 still looks bigger on my foot (the black color and the way the upper meets the midsole on it contribute optically for sure). Beyond my personal impressions… the rocker and geometry is MUCH more present on the NB4. Massively so to my feet. It just wants to roll forward whether the NB3 feels like a lifeless flipper. The laces on both are terrible and I still think the eyelet chain on the Nb4 is too complicated.

@@SagasuRunning umm interesting. Maybe I just don’t tend to “feel” rockers in shoes as much as others. Only one can recall a real rocking sensation was the 1080v10 but never bothered with that line again. How many miles have you done in your 3 ? Anyway we seem to at least concur that the 4 isn’t somehow a “lesser” shoe than before - more reverse in fact.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 7 ай бұрын
@@TimGrose I’m very sensitive to rockers in shoes, especially forefoot rockers… as I generally intensely dislike them. I’ve done 92km/57mi in my pair. I’ve not been running in mine a lot since I finished my reviews. My feet needed a break from max cushion/rocker. I’m mostly trail running now and what road running I am doing… I’m doing in the amazing Adios 8. I will get the NB4 over 100mi… but it may take a bit of time. Not sure I’d call the NB4 “lesser”… it’s a far superior shoe to me. For a max cushion/rockered shoe “modern” trainer it is going to be hard to beat.

@@SagasuRunning I wonder if I am just going quite slow for me in Novablasts. I always have most wear in shoes under my toes but in these they don’t really allow that much flex there. But at say 8:30 pace not going to be much anyway. On other hand in shoes like Pegasus Turbos or Soeeds I often found had little too much “ground feel” under my toes sometimes.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 7 ай бұрын
@@TimGrose Most of the running I have done in the NB4 has been 8:51-8:03/mi (5:30-5:00/km, I train in kms) and the shoe excels at that for me. It’s the shoe (and type of shoe) I will take out when I need to go a longer (20k or so) casual run. Anything short I want less shoe (like the Adios 8) and anything longer I want more shoe (like a Superblast or Vaporfly 3). It’s very much an easy/casual runner that rolls me along and nothing more. For the amount of foam in the shoe I do find the NB4 has more flex in it… which I quite like as it does give my foot a bit more training stimulus…. Though I don’t find the shoe offers much ground feel at all (then again I’m comparing it to an Adios 8, Streakfly or a Peg). It does haves a nice, what I call, “complaint ride”… much like a shoe with very little rubber on the outsole (like a classic Hoka) which also adds to the overall soft feel for me. A lot of positives on this shoe for me… it’s going to be hard to beat in 2024 for this style of max cushion/rockered shoe…

The NB4 is still squishy… but 50 miles in its yet to turn mushy like the NB3 does quickly. I’m going to keep putting miles into the shoe until I reach that point… I’m curious where the “mushy” point is. I do find the rocker in the NB4 takes pressure off of the forefoot foam having to do all the work. That and the midsole sculpting go a long way to make the shoe run much better.

With the 3 I ran 8 hours and 100km with good/excellent results (even though many people here on KZfaq pseudo "personal trainers" said it wasn't good!) and I no longer had tendon problems with drop 8 unlike before I ran with a drop 12 and then the roll is excellent even if it took a little time before "taming" them because at the beginning I felt like I was hopping instead of running. This version 4 weighs a little more, but the sole seems better distributed and if they hold the road well this is a very important point.....But is the 4 really that much better than the 3? I'll try it and then I'll tell you! Best thing you can do is try the shoe out for yourself, and form your own opinion. The worst thing you can do is question the integrity of his channel... because he has an opinion.

@@robsnow2099 Thet is what I’m doing on this channel. Offering my own opinion based on my own tastes and running preferences. Even if said opinion is counter to the prevailing opinion in the space. If anything when I do feel that my experience differs so greatly from everyone else’s… I will lean in more to understand why and try to share what I’m learning…. So others can go out and see for themselves.
