I had read The Killer Angels and loved the book, so was excited to learn that it was being made as a movie, the film which which became Gettysburg. And I remember being thrilled at first on that news, then hugely disappointed to learn that Tom Berenger would be playing one of the two pivotal characters of the novel, James Longstreet. I was familiar with Tom's work, maybe too familiar having seen him in several films including Eddie and the Cruisers, The Big Chill, Platoon, Major League and so forth, and while enjoying his performances in those films, felt that his screen persona was just too modern to play a historical figure like Longstreet in a period piece like Gettysburg. And boy was I wrong. In fact, his performance turned out to be the best thing in the film, while also being the biggest most pleasant surprise.

Yeah, but some of the beards did look a little phony... like they were laid on by an upholsterer.

Berenger is a legend for so many reasons and roles- he has helped bring countless folks to not only the fascinating topic of Longstreet but the essential topic of the Civil War. One simply can’t understand the nuances of the US without understanding this pivotal war. TB helped humanize both. Thanks Tom, and thanks AD :)

I wonder who that actor was that asked if he died in the movie. I got a good laugh about that. I could picture Tom turning into SSGT Barnes when he heard that

@@addressinggettysburg Well of course he didn't have time to research his character, he was busy making sure Blofeld didn't blow up the movie with a death ray.

@@addressinggettysburg Yes. Berenger said he was offered either of two roles, but he opted for Longstreet because Longstreet was from his home state of South Carolina. Maybe he was joking, but I don't think so. Edit: It comes up at app. 1:24:30.
