WARNING: If you can't handle frank discussion of life, medicine, anatomy, human interactions and excrement, you might want to skip this episode.
For years members of our audience who are in the medical field have been asking to do an episode about Civil War Medicine. We finally had the stars align and we welcome LBGs Rick Schroeder and Fran Feyock to the show for their first appearance. Both worked in the medical field as a surgeon and a nurse and have dedicated a lot of their guiding to programs about how the wounded were treated.
We wanted to get into the nitty-gritty, as much as possible, to talk about, not only the treatments, but also how different diseases and traumas affect the body. As always, our Patrons provided us with solid questions to ask.

Nice presentation guys! I was fortunate enough to travel to Gettysburg with 50+ other people on bus trips from Johnstown for 10 years with these gentlemen. When we would get there Wayne Motts and Jim Hessler would join us. We were blessed to spend the rest of the day with all four Licensed Battlefield Guides. If anyone out there has the chance to take a tour with these guys you will not be disappointed. Their wealth of knowledge is unbelievable and they will take the time to explain it so everyone can understand the battle. Thanks for the memories guys! Take care, Ed

Having said I wouldn't visit Gettysburg twice, my next trip needs to be with a LBG who can give it a medical emphasis.

Just listened to this program. Was excellent. Read both book, too much for human indurance and, bullets and bandages. Between them and your program put a new look on civil war wounds, illness and soldiers heart. As a retired Paramedic with 35 years field experience from Cambria Co. Pennsylvania which both Rick and Fran have experience as well. I applaud their knowledge and sharing it with all of us. Thanks to addressing Gettysburg as well.

@@addressinggettysburg I have done a lot of research into Civil War pharmacy but could find no mention of the hypnotic called Chloral Hydrate, made famous by the term Micky Finn. Chloral Hydrate had been discovered over 50 years before the Civil War. Just wondering if anyone could shed light on whether it was used or not.

Great episode Matt & Eric! Great guests. My ancestor Sgt David Alva Barnett of Company B- 99th PA is featured as a case study in Medical and Surgical Record of the War of the Rebellion. He was wounded in the left knee at Kelly’s Ford in November of 1863. He was transported to Douglas Hospital in Washington DC and had his leg amputated. He died from blood poisoning.

Dave Grossman's book, "On Combat" is a good read about the psychological effects on soldiers aside from the chapter about video games being mass murder trainers. He would be a good guest, I think he also has a charity.

Ref catheters, having experienced this during a spell in hospital, it's like medieval torture having one inserted, followed by total rapture when it starts to work. I never want to experience it again.
