Having built some battle bots in the early 90s, it's good to hear from someone else that had to build that kind of stuff pre-Internet. No videos to reference, no kits, no browsable mecha parts sites or consumer-facing companies for much of anything. Just the Yellow Pages, a telephone attached to a wall, and a bunch of driving around. Good times!

@@clarkstir55 "Critter Killer" followed by the creatively named "Critter Killer II". Although, this was long before the show "Battle Bots". A few years before Marc Thorpe organized the first Robot Wars competitions in San Francisco (which I *think* Adam & others participated in), there was an annual Critter Crunch started at MileHiCon in the late 80s. A wacky DJ by the name of Kelly Lockhart brought the Critter Crunch rules over to DragonCon in Atlanta in 1991 (or '92?). Finding the Critter Crunch rules on the back page of a DragonCon flyer was my first exposure to battle bot (critter crunch) competitions. Looking back, it was really exciting to build a bot in an absolute total vacuum with only the rules to reference. No vids, no pics, no point of reference of any kind. JUST the one page of rules and a competition date.

ah yes, the Bistromath Drive! One of Douglas Adams most hilarious concepts along with the "somebody else's problem field" which renders objects invisible to the perception of others. Technically the infinite improbability drive is a different invention, created by hooking a finite improbability generator up to a good fresh cup of really hot tea.

TOS was never "my" show as I grew up on TNG, but living in Maryland I got to see the Enterprise as it languished for years in the Smithsonian basement gift shop, twice during its restoration at Udvar Hazy, and now again as it sits in its full glory on prominent display. I have to say that it is a very emotional experience for me and I continue to be impressed at the work they put into restoring it. Also, fun fact; my grandmother worked for the Air and Space museum in the 70s and my uncle has memories of doing homework in the storage areas next to the Enterprise when it wasn't on display at all.

We used to make props and scenery that were completely idiot-proof, but we realised that actors had a talent for misusing, breaking, and damaging stuff, so the extra level was 'Turn-proof'.

Almost in the same vein; I was the tech dir for a small theater in Oregon. We relied heavily on volunteers and reused EVERTHING. One loadout we were taking apart a set and one of the actors was helping tear down the set. They were kicking through flats and breaking wood trim. They even ripped a door off the hinges. We stopped letting actors help with that aspect after that.

Back in 2015 I wrote a poem dedicated to the USS Enterprise. It was inspired by the restoration the Smithsonian was doing as well as by my lifelong love of Trek. A great galactic bird with wide-swept wings, through space and time her powerful warp drive sings. Dilithium crystals fueling twin nacelles above a Duranium-alloy hull with many stories to tell. By Tholian, Klingon, and Tribble her crew's been vexed yet her unceasing missions have had great effect. To a galaxy in turmoil, she's helped bring much peace. Humanity's best into outer space unleashed. Despite the inner darkness plaguing the human spirit she's brought her message to all those who would hear it: -Diversity in all its infinite combinations. -Succor to those in desperate situations. -Peace and justice brought to civilizations edge. -Hope to all those who stand upon desperation's ledge. USS Enterprise: NCC-1701 Inspiring generations yet her task's not done. The future is hers and she holds it dear- Her power and glory help allay fear. With the stars as her guide and her crew in her heart, may she fly on forever by the courses she charts.

Not dealt with theatre props, but they can't be as bad as children. I used to build museum models and interactive exhibits, and it's amazing how over engineered something has to be if children are going to be operating it. Something with a simple push button switch needs industrial grade metal parts because a small child will break anything else. I made a model to show how a weaving loom worked, a weaving shuttle mounted on a track, steel cables used to pull on the blocks that launched it along the track. Once built it spent two weeks in our workshop being tested every time we walked past it, by a team of fully grown modelmakers, to test its durability. It passed with flying colours, so was installed into the museum and it took a day and a half before it was destroyed.

As an artist, I find your passion for what you do deeply touching. There is NOTHING on EARTH (besides being a parent) that offers the same sensation as being an artist. You are a supreme artist, and even though I live more on the "Fine Art" (where the snobs live) side, what you create belongs in museums every bit as much as the Mona Lisa. And YOU UNDERSTAND HOW FUN IT IS TO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING AND LEARN HOW TO DO IT AS YOU DO IT! I am more mixed media sculptor than anything and I LIVE to create art that begins with ideas that seem nearly impossible to me. It's so much fun to bring them into being! I can see that same joy in your face when you are doing your work or telling your stories. Thank you for making me see that others feel that joy! Be well.

Fave Star Trek memory: Meeting and making Karl Urban cry. Karl and I met during filming Thor 3 in Brisbane Australia. Good friends with the original Dr. McCoy's (DeForest Kelley) close friend and assistant Kris Smith (Kris and I see each other like family, in the same vein that the Kelley's saw Kris) and got him a signed headshot for Karl. Gave Karl a message from Kris saying "On behalf of Kris and DeForest Kelley's friends and family, thank you for your contribution to the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy. Not only did you bring back the spirit of Star Trek, The Original Series and the character of Dr. McCoy, you brought back the spirit of DeForest Kelley. If he was still here, Mr. Kelley and his wife Carolyn would be very honoured and proud of you! They would loved you!" Karl was in the middle of signing a headshot of him as McCoy and he started to shed silent tears and whispered "Thank you."

As a theatrical director who also ran stage construction and props when needed…we spent a lot of time threatening actors to take care of their props, costumes, etc. ! Actors can be quite the destructive force. Then again, to be fair, when I was young, I played Flute in Midsummer Night’s Dream who plays the girl Thisbe in the play within the play and I tended to shred that dress nightly (to the angst of the costume mistress).

I never made props, but when I was in high school I had a drama class, and I performed a Star Wars scene with another guy. (Vader and Luke's final confrontation in Return of the Jedi.) I brought in toy lightsabers for some lightsaber duel, and after all the practicing we did, when we actually came on to the stage to perform, in his first strike he breaks my lightsaber in half, sending red plastic cylinders upstage. These were commercial products, literally designed to be beaten together, and when we got on stage they failed. And the kid wasn't even five foot tall.

The bistromathics drive wasn't the improbability drive. I forget the name of the drive it was for though. It was installed on a vessel that was also covered in a S.E.P. (Someone Else's Problem) field, too, though, which Ford noticed after, if memory serves correctly, Arthur was returned to the near-present after he and Ford had split up while trapped on Earth's prehistoric land. The infinite improbability drive was very predicated on telephone numbers. The bistromathics version of the drive was built as an improvement. Again I'm going off old memories of a story I read dozens of times through junior high and high school and have been meaning to get around to rereading at some point now that I'm approaching my 29th completion of an orbit around our star.

Can someone help me out, here? There was a show on TV when I was a kid, that had a motorized evening chair. I feel like the show was “All That”, but I could easily be mistaken. I could also just Google it, but where’s the fun in that? Anyway, the first time I saw the chair, I thought “oh, that’s cool”, but then, if memory serves, they used the chair all the time. It grew a little thin over time. Thing is, from a production standpoint, that thing was their special sauce. They may have blown their budget on that one go-to joke, and they were going to bleed it dry. I wonder if they had a team of people crafting that thing, or just one dude in a small space figuring it all out.
