Tested member Jared Hinderer asks: "Throughout the show, there were a lot of vehicle myths, and you and all the other presenters seemed to have a decent grasp of stunt driving and car control. Did you ever take lessons in stunt driving in a formal setting, or did it just come down to 'on the job training' from the professional drivers on set?" Thanks, Jared, for your question! Stunt driver here. My number one priority when you hire me is the protection and safety of people and property. Calmness and sense of presence definitely plays into that. People that love to drive fast are racing drivers. People that love to be daring are daredevils. People that love to be safe are stunt workers.

The stunt people being calm makes sense. I remember a show years and years ago where a guy was going to be set on fire, and talked about how he wasn't going to hesitate to abort if things went wrong. I remember his words, "I'm a stunt man, not a daredevil."

Hinder comes from the word for injure or damage probably going back to the word for behind in Germanic languages, so the name could use any of those senses rather than our modern sense of impede. But hind also means a female deer and it's not too much of a stretch to think Hinderer might be a hunter. In Old English hind also meant a farm worker, so the name could come from there, as well.

Not only stunt drivers but driving instructors and license testers I found to have calm nerves too. They are not afraid to just hand over the wheel to a novice driver who quite possibly never drove before and let people make mistakes (within reason). I will be forever impressed watching my driving instructor show me how to parallel park from the passenger seat without breaking a sweat.

I was a state VIP personal driver for years! Driving around ministers, head of state, royals, ... Did get a basic training course but most of the "job" I learned on the job. Doing skids, high speed driving, close protection driving, ... Loved it but I'm glad never overhead abad accident! The being calm comes from being mentally very busy working the car and looking for potential problems and what would be needed to solve it. Just being prepared for when it happens so you can react in a split second.

Hinder comes from the German hinter, which means behind. To hinder means to hold something back, but the surname hinderer means a person from the hinterlands. Hinterlands originally meant the lands beyond/behind a coastal or river port -- same as words like backwater, backcountry, backlands... So not, this poor bloke's ancestors wasn't just named for hindering people. :-)

I learned to drive stick on a 1944 Dodge Weapons Carrier. The way I learned was with the engine off I worked through all the gears several times getting used to the feel and where I needed to put my hand. Then I would work the clutch a few times to feel for where it began to engage. Then I turned on the engine and felt the clutch engage and disengage. Then I started trying to move in first. The biggest thing for me was learning that if I felt like the engine was going to stall just mash in the clutch and let everything stop and start over.

I can't imagine that for any given internal combustion vehicle you could do more environmental damage than you do when you're drifting; or could put more age on the vehicle and its components. This is why I founded the ABS, but as of now I'm its only member.
