Adam, I used to work as a knight at Medieval Times. I had to start out as a squire. There was a part in the show after the end of the final fight where the lights would go out and the squires would have to run out and grab discarded weapons before the lights went on. It was really difficult to find the weapons in the dark. Until one day, when I remembered you testing the pirate eyepatch myth and tried closing one eye before the lights went out. It worked wonders and I told everyone else about the trick. Every squire immediately started doing it and we taught it to every new hire. To my knowledge the trick is still used there today. Thought you might appreciate the weird way your show changed a policy in a unique place.

Regarding props at the end of production: I was working at Animal Logic on the Fox Studios lot in Sydney when they were wrapping up on Alien Covenant, and we got an email saying that the production were clearing out all their assorted props so they wouldn't have to pay to store or ship them. They basically filled a soundstage with props, and you could go through, pick stuff out, and pay whatever the person on the front desk asked. Hidden in a corner was a bunch of stuff left over from The Martian, and that's how I picked up a computer display and mount from the Hermes set for $20.

I love that Adam takes such pains to recommend options rather than dictate actions for the proper displaying of the prop mask and gloves. So refreshing when everyone else on the internet talks as though their word is law and should be followed to the letter.

Debbie Renolds was a fantastic woman, not just as a survivor of The Studio System and an Entertainer, but as a savior of Hollywood History. For many reasons, she is/was a big hero of mine. I'm a costumer, mainly working in independent films. I have the first major build from the first movie I worked on (an 1836 ball gown). I wish I could keep it forever and still had the other prop pieces from that shoot that go along with it. I'm about to donate it to a local museum because I can't carry it around anymore. Phil Tippet is one of my great heroes in movies, even more after watching Light and Magic. His work is astounding, and he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

To this day, it amazes me when I read or watch stories about the most iconic movie props being mis-handled or stored badly. The Alien Drop Ship and the Nostromo are great examples. If I remember correctly, the Nostromo and the original series Star Trek Shuttlecraft props were displayed out of doors for a time, making their restoration very difficult, not to mention props lost to time, altogether.

FYI for those archiving and displaying items. A major source of UV light we all forget about is fluorescent lights. So shop lights, lighted display cases with fluorescent bulbs, and even CFL bulbs. So be careful with what display you put your prop in and what source of illumination you choose when displaying it in all its glory.

There's a Wizard of Oz theme park here in North Carolina that feature props and costumes from the MGM classic. They used to have more but, unfortunately, a lot of it was lost when half the part burned down. A lot of people erroneously claim that the park is abandoned but it's not. It's just slowly rebuilding and only opens in September. It also has the perfect address. 1 Yellow Brick Road, Beech Mountain, NC.

I worked in the motion picture industry for 30 years and lived just a few miles from the Motion Picture Academy. I don’t think they had a museum per se a the time, but they had many exhibits... on production design, storyboards, costumes, etc. They had an exhibit on Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal that was mind boggling!... costumes, props and puppets (The Los Angeles County Art Museum had some movie exhibits as well). I realized how lucky I was and saw as many exhibitions as I could!

I'm also a child of the 70's and 80's and though it was nowhere near on par with Ghostbusters, Star Wars, or many other movies that made us I had the opportunity to purchase one of the actual MK 4 Motorcycles form Hal Needham's Megaforce.... A Friend of mine who was helping to do a little restoration to a practical vehicle that is probable the closest thing to a live action G.I. Joe was had at the time is showing it at the LA Comicon this weekend before returning it to me. The most prized movie prop I own and bought for the 9 year old me.... As I saw the movie on my 9th birthday.

From the PS auction: Roy Batty's coat. So much of my young life right there. With all the great films that have come and gone, it's still my favourite. When he came back from that viewing, Adam could have said in all honesty "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe....".

When I was a kid in the mid 60's. I had written Paramount Studios and asked if they had any leftover Tribbles or a Communicator I could have or buy. I recived a nice generic letter explaining they werent available for sale and had none to give away. Although at the time one could buy a Get Smart Transisitor Radio Pen like the one 86 used to talk to 99.

Now, there is little to no exposure to said entertainment, unless the individual seeks it out. . .and we know that ain't happening. At best, there might be a handful of films, or perhaps an old TV show, they take the time to watch. I am grateful for the time in which I was raised. The weekends would bring Saturday morning cartoons, and around noon, *World Beyond* would provide a double feature sci-fi and/or horror film. Then amazing action films and war movies on *Action Theater.* During the week we had reruns of every kind. _Gilligan's Island, I Love Lucy, Get Smart, Batman,_ Original _Mickey Mouse Club._ And of course, _The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, STAR TREK, Space 1999, Doctor Who,_ and so on. Where I lived, right after school, was _Dialing for Dollars._ They would show the most eclectic selection of films from the history of Hollywood, while their call-in game show occurred during the commercial breaks. And let us not forget, the Late Late Show. A treasure trove of films for those who couldn't sleep. . .or kids that were excited to stay up late. 😄That's when I first saw _"The Spirit is Willing."_ A silly William Castle horror/comedy from 1967, about three ghosts playing pranks on a couple (Sid Caesar, Vera Miles) and their teenage son (Barry Gordon), as they rent a house in New England.² The most memorable bit that stayed with me all these decades later: _The music of _*_Vic Mizzy!_* Oh, that and the blonde kiss-hungry ghost girl! Fluorescent lamps also kick out a bunch of UV. My office has two 4x2 troffers with 4 bulbs each. Enough UV is given off by those to bleach highlighter from documents and some ink. I don't think LED lamps give off UV but I'd check before deploying them in an archival setting. You can get clear UV and IR blocking film just like a car window tint. Can by applied to the glass covering photos and art. Or display cases.

your comments about your Hellboy prop reminds me of when First Lady Reagan's first Inaurgual dress was having problems with the material draping to the floor. Doonesbury's Creator did a real diservice to the Smithsonian conservator staff with his comments,

From the context it seems like you're trying to impart guidance in a more "positive" and less "demanding" or "controlling" manner? I found this to be very interesting, and I'd like to learn more about it, and other ways of being more "positive" when speaking to other people. Is there a name for this kind of word-choosing technique that I can search for to learn about? I do volunteer work teaching bicycle repair and maintenance, so I'm frequently providing technical instruction to small diverse groups of people, and the workshop strives to be a "safe space" for anyone who wants to learn. I'd like to be more aware of how my speech patterns may affect others, and how I can improve in that regard.

I made a foam, and latex scull for a Cheron The Ferryman of The River Styx costume. It was 7 feet tall, with thermo plastic molded bone hands, black flowing multi layered muslin robe, and 32 red LEDs for the irises of the eyes, and won several prizes. The latex of the scull became dry, and hard. It cracked, and silver dollar size chips broke off. But that let the orange foam show through which made it look like mummified skin was pealing off of the underlying scull, and made it even more horrible. It scares grown men, and still wins prizes.

I want a working Key to Hamunaptra so bad. Closest I've found both opens and closes but in a different way than the movie so it doesn't have that satisfying spring release... And it's 400 smackeroos. Still tempted.

I have a vast vintage gun collection and preservation and conservation is a full time job!

Prop store makes me both happy and sad. I'm glad that those items are going to a home, but sad that it's usually a private collector never to be seen again by the public. I really wish Hollywood cared more about preserving it's history. But it's just a business. The videogame industry can also be just as bad at preserving it's history. So many things are going to be lost to time that could be otherwise saved.

I was heartbroken when I found out that all the original models from Thunderbirds were just thrown in a skip. Looking at the current model of the prop store you wonder if it would be viable to open film museums around the world that could display props from films that would also serve as storage.

Russell Crowe donated almost all the props from Robin Hood to a Scottish charity called The Clanranald Trust for Scotland including the big battering ram. Last I heard it was outside in the weather at the charities medieval village Duncarron. It had been damaged by vandals but was still left outside. Haven't been part of the group for 10yrs so no idea what condition it's in now.

A tool that you owned or one you made, would of a kind and worth a mill for me because I wouldn't sell it.

Do the studios still store props or is that no more? Though the sheer amount of props would be daunting to preserve .. how does one decide? (Reminds me of the lost tv episodes from early tape days as tapes were reused rather than kept).

Coolest prop story in movies I ever ran across was Mel Brooks finding out that the prop designer for the original "Frankenstein" movie still had all the lab stuff. Brooks rented it for "Young Frankenstein" So he had "real" props (so to speak) and wasn't just... PUTTINONTHERIIIITZ.

If only... For example there was an insane law in California to preserve props for TV and movies, some of the other KITT'S would still be alive.

There has to be a new film worth having props from before we worry about what future props will be kept. Cinema peaked in the latter half of the 20th Century.

Here is my query out of left field:- If there was ever a space war but only weapons were knife sword and axe and you had to make a set of armor to be worn over your space suit, how would you make it? Whay idea would it look like? As there is no weight in space all you had to contend with was moving in your suit and armor with all its drawbacks, your enemy has the same problems but as till now, they have never known war, thats why the weapons probs. You have no weapons as your team & you, Leader, are on a search for E.T.Life intending friendship but your enemy sees you all as murdering invaders and, & of course, communication is impossible.
