Weirdly, Stephen Fry satisfies almost the exact same regions of my brain as Adam does. Both wield anecdotes in story telling like punctiation, shortcutting through conceptual beats with a pithy quote that applies well. Both love gadgets. Both embrace the difference between being "smart" and knowing a lot of facts. Both lean into the things and subjects that excite them. Big fan of both gentlemen and would love to see a conversation between them.

I think Adam could actually nail the spirit of QI. Definitely want to avoid a Top Gear US situation hehe. For the love of God though you have to try and get David Mitchell as a regular and/or Jimmy Carr. Alan Davies is always great too for some cameo action. Easily my favorite British game format styled show and so prolific I've seen several "series" (seasons). Would recommend 100% Stephen is so delightful!

When I first saw the Matrix, I hadn't seen any prequels or any heard anything about the movie. I simply went to watch a movie with some friends. It absolutely floored me then and still does today. Calling it a perfect movie is probably the best way of describing it. I watched it 3 times in theatre, and when it left, I'm not ashamed to say that I did "acquire" it online so I could watch it again. Once it was available on DVD, I went out and immediately bought it.

No it would not. It would be garbage just like all American remade things. Qi is acutely British and "remaking" it would suck all the soul and fun out if it. Just watch Qi. No need to remake it. No offense to Adam but no one would make a good American Qi. Just like taksmaster america failed. American comedy styles don't fit the panel show format.

The thing that blew me away in The Matrix was that the fights were both grounded and completely surreal. So many iconic shots, like Neo going over Morpheus head in the original, or the Chateau fight in Reloaded (which I think is the best of the lot) and there's a few frames where everything's in motion on completely different planes. Yet it so very, very rarely betrays the gravity-defying wirework that goes into creating it. Pure brilliance. Also, Stephen Fry is insanely smart and more than capably succeeded by the wonderful Sandi Toksvig on QI.

I love a fight scene that works to show you what's going on. If the audience can't understand the space and follow the motions, then it can't bring out parts of the characters in the scene. An amazing fight is physical acting. In the Matrix Neo and Morpheus and Trinity and Smith all fight in their own ways, and the combination of the main actors and the stunt performers carries through with that. I am awed by a great stunt team. There should be Oscars for stunts.

I agree. A good fight scene is like a dance. It is choreographed after all. And watching it is like watching a dance, an art form. A fight scene with multiple cuts and without the sense of space quickly becomes exhausting and boring to watch.

My biggest issue with matrix is the 'residual self image' conundrum. If we all look like our physical selves in the matrix, then we must also be true offsprings of our parents (as we frequently look like our parents!) So the babies the machines 'grow' must also be composed of the DNA of their parents. But no mention was made of this. As an aside, the sci fi author who makes you think the most has to be Philip K Dick. He dresses existential questions in beautifully lurid sci fi. All the films made of his work are really, really good.

What I love the most about "The Matrix" is the fact that the Wachowskis clearly put enormous thought, planning & effort into every aspect of the movie -- the story, the different characters & their respective roles (& pertinent arcs), the storyboarding for scene breakdowns & camera angles, the technological challenge of creating Bullet Time [C] shots w/o using CGI as a crutch, the artistic sensibility re backgrounds, scenery, props & costumes ...even the music soundtrack. The YT channel Sideways did a brilliant video showcasing the musical genius that went into composing & recording the Matrix soundtrack, something that absolutely had a significant impact on audience members w/o them being fully aware of how cleverly influential it was in their viewing experience (myself included, & I have a background in classical music). That only further illustrates the lengths 2 which the creators went while designing & producing "The Matrix" ...much like THE Matrix. Hmmm.... 🤔

Corridor Digital did a short break down of the dojo sparring scene either in their Stuntmen or CGI artists react series. They talk about the 180° rule, where that the camera stays on 1 side of the actors/their actions don't cause them to exchange places for ease of reference for the audience. The way it was done in the Matrix, strategic cuts were used to have the fight flow naturally around the dojo, without seemingly being a chaotic mess

Adam Savage is the only other living human being I have ever heard put my thoughts about The Matrix into words. In a nutshell, The Matrix is a film I consider to be 'perfect'. Every scene, every edit, every line of dialog adds to the story and moves it forward. This movie is the epitome of Einstein's famous quote: "Makes things as simple as possible, but no simpler.". The Matrix neither adds fluff to nor dumbs-down a story that contains a lot of potentially complex subject matter and story elements. It just lets the story unfold and explain itself at its own pace (the "perfect" pace), with all questions answered over time (unlike a lot of TV shows/movies, where you NEVER get satisfying answers to almost any meaningful questions). With the Matrix, you're highly rewarded for paying attention, absorbing concepts that might cause some mental gymnastics initially, and for taking the road less traveled.

I had a long journey with the Matrix, when I first watched it, thought it was a really good film, watched it again a few weeks later and started to realise it was a really good film, made me think about the nature of our reality and before I knew it I had watched it a dozen times within a couple of months. Now I watch it at least once a year, it still fills me with questions and intrigue and how brilliant the effects were and how they still hold up today. A truly seminal film in so many ways which helped set me on a path to question who we are, where we come from and why we are here. That’s the best of film making, once in a decade, once in a generation film.

Bayhem - Michael Bay's portrayal of intense action through many short clips of vehicles crashing, punches landing etc. reminds me of a comic strip in a newspaper, where they have limited space to tell the story so the fight scenes are often close ups of kicks / punches / gunfire etc.

Ghost in the Shell (the 1995 version) is that movie for me. It had such a huge impact on my life, and is literally what led me to a lifetime of meditation and Buddhism. And of course, it was the inspiration for The Matrix. ;) Spirited Away is probably my second favorite film. I know they're both animated so not quite the same department as what you work in. If I had to pick a live action film? I think Gandhi. It's impossible for me to watch that film and not be deeply moved. Ben Kingsley's performance is phenomenal.

This is a great breakdown about how technology is no substitute for good framing and an eye for what emotionally lands. Even tho some of the "cutting edge" cgi seems a bit dated now, it actually works perfectly with the theme of a synthetic reality. This is also why the best practical effects will always work better in the hands of a talented filmmaker despite being less "realistic." I haven't seen the recent one, but the critiques I've heard suggest that there's something about the rhythm of the (disparage) effects that makes them land less satisfying than the aged ones

Spot on about the original Matrix it’s very rewatch-able. It doesn’t move too slow or so fast. No one scene takes too long or is just a collection of random back-to-back fast cuts that gives you a headache. In fact the use of slow-mo (bullet time) turns what is normal super fast fights (with guns or fist) into a slow rhythmic dance. So these sequences have bits of rapid action inter mixed with slower camera movements within the environment they are great to watch again and again. Twister is a similar movie that you can pick up at any point and not feel lost. Many modern movies have too many similar sequences, for example many of newer Bond 007 films that are fun the first time but seem stupid on a rewatch.

Back to the Future is my favourite movie (movies). It's still easy for me to say. I still believe it and can be earnest when I say it. Those movies bed me in to a comfort zone and tend to make me feel the way I did when I saw it as a kid. To me Back to the Future packs an advantage that will always handicap newer, glossier, more extravagant (better?) movies that attempt to displace it from my top spot; this movie and I share a relationship that will always ensure I'll keep it on its pedestal... It gives me notalgia and for that I grant it affection. Back to the Future was my first ever experience of a true Hollywood blockbuster film on the big screen. - I was all of 7 years old! I totally remember going to the cinema with my Dad to see it. Living with the trilogy throughout the decades has also made me appreciate that it has a gentleness about it and an accessability to the whole family regardless of age, which is a nice thing. - Yeah, I make a point of watching that trilogy every year, usually around Christmas time. But I also watch the Matrix trilogy every year as well. They're amongst my very favourite movies because of the broad spectrum of satisfaction they can offer an audience. You like big idea story telling? - Check. You like crazy action? - Check. You like bonkers production? - Check. - Those characters are cool, the design is cool, the soundtrack is cool, and then there's the WTF revelations. - It's a solid ten on the rewatchability scale for me. I love it all! I just love those movies. Love them! 😀

With that said, on this viewing I did find a small nit. It is a sound foley issue: During the helicopter scene with the minigun, the sound it makes is that of a traditional machine gun and not the brrrt sound it should make.

Stephen Fry in Adam's library! Official. You heard it here first! I often felt, actually, living in the UK and enjoying both shows, that Mythbusters was a sort of sister show to QI. Similar kinds of weird curiosity I enjoyed satisfying. They both encompass a lot of what I knew at the time, and still know now.

An discussion with Steven Fry would be great but also a great challenge. You have have to come up with subject that would be engaging to both of you enough for the interactions to keep going. On quite a few occasion, M. Fry sujet seem to leave his interviewer mesmerized as he run away with the subject.

As always, thanks for the wonderful content Adam. Speaking as a brit, I feel that QI might not translate well if America recreated it. Just an opinion but I think it could be more of a "porridge" than a "Whose line is it anyway?" But yes, would love to see Adam and Stephen having a chat, or even doing a one day build together. :o)

My VHS copy of The Matrix has a mistake. When Mouse delivers the phone to Neo, there’s a hand on the desk behind them in one shot. And then it cuts to another angle and there’s a filing cabinet where the human would have been standing.

The first Matrix is right up there with my all time favorite movies, but that's the movie I watched too many times. I missed it in theatres, and when it came out on DVD I borrowed my brothers copy, and never returned it. I watched that movie every single night, for a solid two months. The world they created in that film captivated me in a way that is rare in movies. I've never heard it described as the "perfect movie" until now, and I think you're right. I also find it interesting just how many of my friends never understood what was going on. Maybe my maker's mind works different, but I was right there, following it all with absolute precision and joy.

I recently made a program, on this channel, that can convert any film into ASCII art. And watching the matrix in ascii art is so, incredibly, satisfying. I can’t post the whole thing because of copyrights. I did a quick cut of the trailer. And did trailers of Weird Science, War Games, TRON And Knightrider. But the matrix I rendered out in its complications. And sat watching it on my massive Apple iMac in ascii and it was so thrilling.

Two nights ago I was telling my wife that my two role models in life are Adam and Steven Fry! :-) Both embody so many ideals of professional, emotional, and intellectual approaches that I've aspired to all my life. Add to that that they're both able to share it with the world so effortlessly, entertainingly, and with such sincerity and ease that it sometimes literally makes me cry. I love them both as deeply as one can a faraway person they don't know. And I think it'll break my brain when (NOT IF, pls) the two sit together for a chat.

The matrix, to this day, is the only movie that once we finished watching it, we rewound the VHS and started it over and watched it again. I also find that parts 2 & 3 are generally underrated. The multi-smith fight from 2 is the most satisfying fight scene I’ve ever seen, and the mech scenes from 3 take the cake for, well, mechs. Haven’t got through 4 yet.

How can I ask Adam a question about which glue to use? To bond a cork to a bakelite/plastic cap, replacing the cork on an 80-year-old thermos flask which has a bakelite cap on the cork stopper?

I enjoyed The Matrix immensely when it first came out, and it is still one of my favorite movies. However, there has been one glaring flaw in the story that I just can't let go of. In the movie, they state that humans are used as batteries, which makes little sense. A human being would make a terrible battery. I understand the movie has fantastic elements, and I obviously suspend my disbelief for those, but this one thing would have been so much better if the humans were used as processing units to help run the simulation. My understanding is that this was the original plan, but someone along the way thought audiences wouldn't understand that concept and that batteries were an easier idea to grasp. I'm not sure where I heard that--it was years ago--but that makes it extra sad if it's true.

I believe that's confirmed in one of the making of features somewhere. But if you want a nice mental retcon: I kind of think they kept that concept without telling anybody explicitely. It makes a lot of the technobabble about what "The One" is supposed to do a little more coherent. Plus it's totally plausible that the free humans in that story *don't actually know* the extent of what the matrix uses them for, or how.
