Really enjoying your videos thanks for making them. About Irwin, you said it's a good mango but...not good enough. Can you say a little more about why it got cut from the team? Poor flavor? Texture? Disease resistance?...? Thank you!

Taste, apparently. But it might be worth growing just for the beautiful purple colour. I hope so because I've just planted one.

Nice video as usual! What are your best sellers and why? Which one got the best shelf life? Which one is the most productive? Which one got the most complex flavor? I show in a previous video that you are discarding pruned mango parts, why don't you use them as mulch under your mango trees? Thank you

Lancetilla was one I also purchased because of Pine Island Viewer, before I knew much about mango varieties, I was hoping it would be a good container tree, but did poorly in container, the fruits were so large they just took up to much energy, I recently put it out to pasture, literally, on a In laws farm, maybe will do ok there. I still think it has some value for its genetics.

Will we ever be able to find a very good tasting viable commercial variety that ships well and finally drive a silver spike through the heart of the Tommy Atkins industry? IMHO Tommy Atkins have been a public relations nightmare for the mango industry. We can thank TA industry for half the people who insist they don't like mangoes. It needs to go the way of the dodo bird.

Thanks for your videos - been living in Boynton 30 plus years and didn't know about your farm until this year. Crazy, esp since am a mango lover. Now avid follower of your videos. In fact, just had my first 3 grafts fail. So, two questions: Do you have a Lemon Zest in ground grafted onto rootstock (probly from Zill). How old/big is it and has it ever fruited? Mine is several years old with trunk about 4 to 5 in diameter and one fruit. Just wants to grow... fast... up. I just a week ago cut it way back and may just abandon it. 2nd. I am planning a couple mango trees in front yard. Upright moderately vigorous growth is desired, so have settled on a Glenn (I like the fruit). Other choice is either of: Maha Chanok, Cogshall, Coconut Cream, NDM#4. I know Cogshall would be a good choice based on growth, but Coconut Cream and Maha are much better eating. Suggestions? Oh, a 3rd question - do you sell scions and if so, what time of year? Want to continue grafting. Thanks so much and I hope this was the right place to ask questions?

Glad you found us! I have Lemon Zest in two places. One tree is from Zill's and has fruited for two years. The other I grafted onto an existing seedling tree, and that has had fruit for the last two years also. btw, we have a grafting video that should be out this weekend. Perhaps that will help.

Thanks for replying. So maybe still hope for my LZ. Mark(?) at Zill's suggested I have been pruning at the wrong time and I certainly wasn't diligent about it. Re the scions, just saw that you make them available now. I did watch your video on grafting and will be watching the veneer grafting video today. BTW I was the "young man" who brought in the Wally mango.

@Rick Smith I've got 12 mango trees 🌳 on ¼ acre. If I had another ¾, I'd plant a Lancetilla and a Cabeza. Love big fruit. It's why I planted a Jak Fruit in 2008.

Great video! Dominica was one of Valerie's favorite mangos this year. Craig isn't willing to add the tree to our property though :). So many fantastic mangos out there - I would rather have several trees of my favorite varieties than a large collection of many different mangos.

Perhaps your area is better suited to it, or the weather this year was perfect for it. I liked the mango, but it didn't make the top eighty

Would like to add, that Dominica is actually called "Banilejo" in the Dominican Republic, it is one of the favorite varieties of locals. pros: Long shelf life, very sweet, good flavor, cons: small, poor seed to flesh ratio, fibrous, although the fibers are mostly soft kind you can bite through. I would highly recommend this as root stock, for soils outside Florida. I know you mostly use Turpentine for root stock there, but those outside Florida have had poor results with trees on Turpentine, if you intend to graft a tree for shipping outside Florida, I recommend you give the Banilejo, a try. its adapted well to lots of soil types, even wet.

I sell scions. So far I have just sold them locally, but they would survive a few days in transit. We don't ship plant materials to CA because of the restrictions.

I believe the variety called "Dominica" in Florida, is the same as Banilejo. as far as I know, there is no mango in the D.R. called Dominica. I have seen pictures of the "Dominica" in Florida, and they look identical to Banilejo. By the way, a new "improved hybrid" has been developed of the Banilejo, it is called, "Mingolo" it has the flavor of Banilejo, but is a bit bigger, and little less fiber. extremely productive, so if you like Banilejo, and come across a Mingolo, you should be happy.

agriperma Thank you for letting me know this information! About a month ago I was given five mangos that were identical in behavior (color, size, smell) to banilejo. I had my dad try them and he was happy to report they were banilejos. We planted all five pits and two germinated. Sadly, the tree where the mangos came from was torn down. I wanted to graft from the mother tree.... Now we wait until they bear fruit.... But I am still looking for a mature tree that I can air layer or graft. Thank you again and will keep my eyes open for the varieties you mention.

If it's only black where it was cut, I don't think there's anything to worry about. It the black starts spreading, sterilized your pruning tool and cut about an inch below the damaged area.

sometimes inflicting a wound can get a tree to send out a shoot. Sometimes it heals over before it sends out shoot, so the suggestion of cutting a circle out of the bark might work.
