Talk To Me In Korean

Күн бұрын

University life varies from country to country. We do not know much about college life in other countries, but we can at least tell you what life can be like for a university student in Korea. Hyojin couldn't do this by herself, so she invited Hyunwoo and Terris to join her and share their experiences as well. This video is longer than usual, so sit back, relax, enjoy watching it, and let us know about the differences you found between college in Korea and in your country.
Thank you for studying with us!

Thanks for the video. As an American university instructor here in Korea I both UNDERSTAND and HATE the university festival period and students' somewhat lackadaisical attitude towards classes. I've seen students both like Hyunwoo & Hyojin in classes so instructing can be both great and frustrating. Thanks again for the video.

In Brazil we have a nacional test system called ENEM, it happens every early november and it's the test that gives you a place in the college, you can't go in the collage without doing this test or if your score it's lower than the one your university chose. It happens in the weekend (saturday and sunday) which you spend 5 hours doing 90 questions in the saturday and more 5 hours doing another 90 questions plus a text in 6 hours. It's very tiring and the questions are really hard. People would spend several years studying for it even after graduated from high school and in the end, a lot of people give up and start working without a college graduation.

I'm in high school in NZ and our final external end of year exams for each subject is usually 3 hours long but some like my Japanese are 2 hours long (these are the exams at the same time in every NZ school). We constantly have internal exams too so if you're very very sick (like got hit by a bus or something) you can still pass your subject and enter uni based on a progress grade. I'm really excitied to go to Uni!

I hadn't realized how interesting this topic is approached with all seriousness. I am trying to find a solid reference and I can't find one except from friends and acquaintances opinions n_n. My ex-girlfriend and I used to avoid using the "American" label in general because it made us feel ambiguous, her rather being called a Californian and I willing to not take part as to identify myself with a culture or adjective, having lived all of my life in a hodgepodge of cultures. Honestly, thank you!

I think the reason homework helps is because the teacher can assign the homework based off of the test so you know what they are looking for in terms of what you need to focus on. If the teacher only lectures you have a lot of information and you don't know where to focus or what is more important to remember.

I think that Australian Uni is kind of similar to Korean Uni, b/c we only have a few major assessments then big exams too! Mostly it's just lectures and not so interactive, but we do have group assignments. We don't have many sorority or fraternity clubs either.
@ReNGYN
@ReNGYN 10 жыл бұрын
The interactivity all depends on which university you go to in Australia and the subject. There are clubs, it just depends on the person on whether they want to get involved.

In norway, we don't usually have a test like SAT or something like that, they usually give u a score for your whole high school years. We don't have school activaties that can give u extra score, but there are some subjects that give u extra score such as foreign language, IT classes, science classes also math classes (harder math level than everyone else, it's not oblicatory)

It's interesting that Korean high school is harder than college. It's VERY opposite in America. We have 1st year/freshmen classes that are meant to have people drop out so we lose like 1/4 of a class sometimes
@flav7758
@flav7758 9 жыл бұрын
Same here in Australia! The High School is really easy and the majority lazy and non-independent students can finish their senior years easily except private school. Private School is more harder cause too many exams like 8 exams per year...

The semester length is almost the same as polytechnic in singapore. It's pretty stress too but as long as you know how to handle time and such it will be fun. We don't use the term 'credit' but 'module' each module is roughly about 4 credits each except for the interdisciplinary modules which ranges from 2 - 4 credits. Are all the modules examinable in Korea? Cause for my school we don't really have much examinable modules, they are mostly project and individual assignments based.

yes you're partly right, if the student is not good at studying, then that student needs to follow another easier course (there are 4courses), but ANYbody who graduates from secondary school (doesn't matter which from which course) can register to ANY university, but of course you don't see that much happening :) oh and only for the students who want to register for medicine there is a test, and that's only in Flanders, not in Wallonie :) (the test is because of capacity issues of the uni)

in order to pass every year in secondary school, you need to get 50 or 60 (depending on course) average points on every course, if you don't , then you need to do that year again, and if you pass every year and you graduate from highschool, you can go to any college, there is no certain percentage or anything needed.

I think the reason for Koreans caring about the entry year is because of how hard it is to enter with exams and whatnot. In the US it's not that it isn't difficult to enter, but the finals and whatnot to graduate is especially challenging so graduating is a big accomplishment,

I feel ya. I wouldn't like to be called that either in TODAY'S world, but I think an accurate usage of the term is important for the sake of understanding and precision in the near future. Sometimes I feel indirectly referred to and so excluded by the vague notion of what "America" really is. I guess it also has to do with Spanish, we rarely use the word "America" if not to speak of the geographical region, its history or population. Cheers from Mexico!

I went to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) here in the U.S. We were on a quarter system consisting of three 10 week + finals week quarters per year. No homework at all. Your grade was based on a midterm test and a final OR midterm, final and research paper. We were responsible for anywhere from 1 to 6 text books of information. It was very difficult and you really had to study.

Your high school final tests sound a lot easier than ours. In Australia, we have to take a 2.5/3 hr exam, per ATAR (Australian Tertiary Acceptance Rank, or university entrance) subject you do. You can have a maximum of 6 subjects, so that's 6 exams, all 2.5/3 hours long, over the course of I think 2 weeks. Not to mention, that is for 50% of your university entrance score. You need to do 2 more sets of those exams for your school mark, which is the other 50%. So in my final year, I have 18 exams.

In Australia we have just one final score based off the final year of school. There's no chance to resit and your score is standardised against what subjects you did and how other people performed in the exam. Then your numeric score says what degrees you can enter into. My university course has a lot of assignments and hardly any exams, which I actually don't like because exams are a lot easier than 3,000+ word reports haha. This video was super interesting though, thank you!
