Talk To Me In Korean

10 жыл бұрын

Do you know how to spell and read your country's name in Korean? Sometimes it is completely different from the original pronunciation in your own language or in English, and sometimes it is almost the same as the English name, but with Korean pronunciation. In this Ask Hyojin episode, Hyojin and Ben tell you how to read and spell some country names in Korean.

Hehehe I actually know that most of the words in Korean are based off Chinese. I mean most Korean and Japanese words are derived from Chinese characters right? So I was expecting that Korean would be similar to Japanese wherein even though they borrowed Chinese characters they have pronunciations far from Chinese 😂😂 But it's very similar so I find it very cool and interesting 😂
@takoyucky
@takoyucky 8 жыл бұрын
Jarish Futalan Yeah, overall Korean pronunciation of Chinese characters is closer to the original than Japanese is. Japanese is somewhat restricted in the sounds they can make.

Great, useful video. :) Even as a native Korean speaker, I'd never thought about what 남아공 stands for! You learn something new every day, as they say. :D Also, I was going to comment on what great on-screen chemistry Hyojin and Ben have, but from reading other people's comments, I have discovered that they are together, which explains it! Naww. :)

I think the countries names are far easier to learn through Mandarin or Japanese the names make perfect sense as mandarin is such a literal language, in stand-alone Korean the literal meanings are lost and it can be very confusing. USA - 미곡 (mi guk) - 美国 (mei-guo) - 'Pretty Country' Peoples' Republic Of China - 중국 (jung-guk) - 中国 (zhong-guo) - 'Middle Country' England - 영국 (yeong-guk) - 英国 (ying-guo) - 'Hero Country' Japan - 일본 (il-bon) - 日本 (ri-ben) - 'Land Of The Rising Sun' or 'The place where all the books come from' Just a few for example. Also as an added note hardly any languages differentiate between Wales/Scotland/England. Japanese has a word for 'Welsh language' but still calls the country England and the people English.

My Chinese teachers always told me that mei in meiguo is mainly based on phonetics (and similar for yingguo) >.> lol Like, a/ME/rica --> /mei/guo /ENG/land ---> /ying/guo

blacknetizen That is true. Also Chinese & Korean (and Japanese and Thai) fail to differentiate between Britain and England and also fail to differentiate between America (the two continents) and [The United States Of] America.

***** The government actually has official terms for all of them. In Japanese, I know イギリス (Igirisu) is used for the Great Britain , but can be used for the entire United Kingdom (despite the fact the name comes from the Portuguese word for "English"). 英国 (Eikoku) is used for England. The United Kingdom itself can be called 連合王国 (Rengou Oukoku) which is literally United Kingdom. In many languages the Americas are considered one continent. It can even be considered so in English. That's why we have the term "The Americas", that's the name for the entire continent. We, however, usually prefer to use "North America" and "South America", but "the Americas" can be a valid continent too. And yes, they can differentiate between the United States and the Americas, it's usually context-based.

***** "Ilbon" is "sun" and "origin", In Chinese Characters it's spelled 日本 (일본). It can be translated as "Where the sun rises", you know, in English sometimes people say "land of the rising sun".

The countries names are far easier to learn through Mandarin or Japanese? NO westerner think so. There was originally no such meanings in the name of countries outside of north east asia. Those meanings are useless and incorrect.

It would be interesting to point out some differences in the transliterations of country names in the South and North Korean dialects of the Korean language with the North Korean dialect showing a clear tendency to employ phonetic approximations closer to the original pronunciation of the source and to rely more on the Russian nomenclature instead of the English one. For example 'Poland' in the SK dialect is 폴란드, which is clearly derived from the English name of that country, however in the NK dialect 'Poland' is rendered as 뽈스까 which sounds very close to the original Polish name of the country i.e. 'Polska'. 'Czechoslovakia' is 체스꼬슬로벤스꼬 in the NK dialect, but 체코슬로바키아 in the SK dialect. 'Germany' is rendered as 도이췰란드 in the NK dialect instead of 독일 typical for the SK dialect.

yohoye commenter I agree that many people probably don't realise Ireland is independent (especially the further you get from Europe), but if you're making a video about countries and their names, you probably should get it right. Otherwise it just looks unprofessional, which is about the last word I'd use to describe ttmik's work ordinarily. Also, there's the fact that there's a bloody english lad in the video - you'd like to think he'd know the difference...

About 100 years ago, when Korea was governed by Japan, The word "arbeit" came to Korea. Because Japanese used that word. They pronounced it "a- ru- ba- i- ddo". It was changed to Korean style "A - R(L) - BA - I - T". But it doesn't mean "job" in Korea. It means "part-time job" in Korea.

I speak mandarin and it seems that rather than it being compared to english and saying the pronunciation isn't similar it's more like a spin off the mandarin word for those countries. Now this isn't me being snotty and whatever people may say, this is just my observation and that if you don't know the korean way to say your country's name you can probably find a version of it in either chinese, although i'm pretty sure korea has expanded enough globally to have it.

What about writing in Korean the actual names of the countries as they are pronounced in their respective languages and not in English ? For example, my country, Rumania, is written 루마니아 in Korean but in Romanian language we do not pronounce it this way but we pronounce and write România (â is the Korean equivalent of ㅡ and is pronounced in the same way). So România, in Korean, would be written as 로므니아. Anyway, this is how is written, but is there another word for saying Romania in Korean ? 감사합니다.

Many Country names originate in Chinese (Meiguo → Mi Guk) or English (Russia -> Reosia). exeption is France(Faguo≠prangseu. the past Korean is Bullanseo.) / Rome (Roma ≠Rome .)

Just to make it clear, although in Chinese,USA is written as 美國 which seems like" pretty country" ,but it actually came from the pronounciation of A"merica" and it should not be understood as "pretty". Same as England as In-Guo, and etc. And so I would say that the names in Chinese sounds a lot more similar to the English name than in Korean. :)

I know why it is "CAH na da" It's because the first language of canada has been french ( Canada is pronounced like this in french) for a longer time than english. There is still a province speaking french called "Quebec". It's just a guess, but I think it is why a lot a people tend to say "CAH"

+Mitsuka Chan It's most likely because of the way it's spelled. I doubt many people would know how Quebecers pronounce Canada.

+takoyucky Indeed, but the first language in the history of Canada is French. So it can be a transformation of the English Canadian language. exactly like the pronunciation of " Z". Usually it is pronounced "zee" but in Canada ( in most part ) it is pronounced "zed" like the French pronunciation. It's just a speculation, but we can't deny the influence of French in canadian-english ( as well as English in the canadian-french)

Oh... If you know both Chinese and English you literally know almost everything... I'm a Chinese and what I need to do is to memorize which of them are Chinese-based and which of them are English-based... Some of them are mixed, e.g. South Africa 남아프리카 공화국 (南Africa 共和國)but there are not much of these

People who speak English and say "Canada" as 캐나다 are usually people with a stronger American accent. People from the UK used "Can-na-da" (카나다) more , so technically the pronunciation/spelling of 캐나다 is not correct.
