In this episode of "Ask Leroy!": Herbie Carter, fisherman and clam digger native to Deer Isle, joins Leroy on the mud flats to help demonstrate how to dig for clams. They talk about their childhoods and times they went clamming together, size requirements for harvesting, history and culture of clamming in Maine, and even how to shuck a clam! We're sure you'll have a good laugh with this episode and hope you'll come away having learned something new about clamming in Maine.
Special thanks to Herbie Carter for helping with this episode.
Clamming in Maine is managed locally and people interested in digging clams should contact the local town office to check on the need for permits and which areas are open for digging.

I grew up in Ipswich Mass. We know a little bit about clams..... i cant believe Leroy cut off the neck or the snout as he called it and threw it away! We just peel off the outer black skin and it leaves a nice handle for dipping in melted butter and tastes fine.

At Wells Beach in 1968, my brothers and I looked for bubbles coming from the sand after a wave went out, we would then immediately dig with our hands and would get a clam. We filled a large pot to contribute to the lobster feast which the adults provided, we did not know then that it was illegal to do so but there's more than one way to get clams.

Exactly . How can’t you just not like these earnest, honest, charming and funny people. I’m from oyster bay and clam every summer . I used to help run the Town Hatchery and shellfish lands . Salt of the earth and approachable .
