We're out here on beautiful Vancouver Island, just north of Nanaimo, at a place called Nanoose Bay. It's low tide on the ocean floor and we've got a small rake and we're out clamming and finding oysters.

I never did clamming but I do like eating them. Here in Wisconsin we do have fresh water clams but DNR says you can't eat them or fish for them. Thanks for the video.

Very nice video and I like your enthusiasm. One very important thing that you should have mentioned was a safety consideration, You should always check with the department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to ensure that the place that you want tp go clamming at is not closed due to bacterial or marine toxin contamination. DFO, Environment Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency work together to identify safe areas to harvest.

Hey good video. When the ice melts I would love to see more videos of the misty minnow, as I have recently purchased one. Do you think you would have much luck in Lake Erie with them?

I had heard that you only want to harvest oysters that you find submerged at low tide. Is that correct?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 жыл бұрын
not sure about that, but these were harvested at low tide, so they were underwater a few hours earlier :)

Good picking. The pacific oysters picked are not as plentiful as it should be. The availability of oysters at Nanoose Bay have truly changed as compared to April 2014 when I was there to pick it. Hundreds and hundreds of oysters were laying on the beach to be picked. I guessed global warming has something to do with it.

Oysters don't spread as fast as clams. People over harvest them. My grandpa planted some on his private beach and was always telling someone to get off his beach. They thought they had a right to walk up on a "random" pile of oysters and start loading up. The worst was they would take the shells which is what the babies grow on. Our beaches will be destroyed in another 50 years

Hey Quick Question!! Whats the optimal tide height for oyster picking?? What is the maximum tide height to harvest?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 3 жыл бұрын
low tide is best and you can harvest at any depth, but depths of less than a foot are idea :)

@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 жыл бұрын
Yes - there is a limit so be sure to check the local regs before you go :) There was actually 3 of us out there that day so we were able to do very well :)
