We are back with another episode of Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We want to say congratulations and thank you for listening, because we are hitting Episode 400 with this release! On this episode we are joined by our first caller who is unsure what to do when her guy friend shares messages from his past fling that seems concerning and troublesome. The twist is that our caller and her guy friend have been romantic before and currently have feelings, but she feels hesitant after seeing these messages. She wonders how to navigate transitioning from friendship to relationship and how to deal with these red flags. Our next caller talks about a dream job turned nightmare after getting a job straight out of college from her friend’s aunt. Our caller has a great relationship with the person who hired her but when her friend’s aunt becomes her boss, everything changes with her strict and rigid expectations. Our last caller struggles to navigate a situation where the person she’s dating has a condition that will limit his life expectancy. She struggles to define the relationship when she realizes that because of his condition, he will always make himself a priority over her. Now she must decide if she should pursue this relationship knowing it’ll differ from something more traditional, or if she should give him space and move on.

Caller with the mean boss, I’ve been there too, spent a year in a role with a manager who had the craziest double standards. I started the job with no on boarding, training, support, buddy or even weekly meetings with her. 6 months in she decided to sit me down and tell me I wasn’t meeting her expectations, despite her shitty management, I had no idea I wasn’t doing everything she wanted, she went to Japan on a holiday for 2 weeks and then a in country break for a week all within my first few months of starting. Shocked me she turned on me and made the following 6 months a nightmare for me, asked me what was wrong with me, made me cry a bunch of times, didn’t like me asking questions and said ‘you should just know’ so it gave me a massive complex, I burnt out majorly and got really sick as a result, two years later I’m still semi recovering and almost have PTSD from being so on edge every day. Over the pandemic and working from home I worked 15 hours a day just to keep her semi happy with me. I’m so glad I left and am now in such a nice job with people who are respectful and kind. I’d leave if I were you, these people often don’t change

Maybe I’m cynical but the last caller’s non-boyfriend is trying to get her to break up with him. Nick was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but the dude set down roots across country, refuses to call her his girlfriend and rarely makes plans to see her. When he said “I thought you were going to break up with me,” I bet he was thinking “I was hoping you were going to break up with me.” 😬 sometimes people are too cowardly to do the breaking up. I think it’s time she moves on.

To the last caller, I haven’t been in a situation like yours but I’ve felt that same feeling. What you are doing right now is exhausting, you can’t keep running after someone that wants to run alone, because yes there might be love but if everything else comes and goes you will never have a stable relationship with him, nor will it be healthy in the slightest, unless it stops being a one sided effort. Because right now you’re the only one trying to work on the relationship to make it great and not only that you’re actually the only one trying to keep the relationship.

The caller with the bad boss: this is the kind of employer who will bulldoze and intentionally confuse/belittle you to maintain their feeling of power and control. The only effective options are, 1.) Quit 2.) Stand up for yourself and tell her you no longer accept this, and she is making everything more difficult on everyone. Tell her explicitly what you need to learn the ropes and no longer need to come to her with questions. If she can't meet you at that level, see option #1.

If its not a set up, i think it's horrible of the caller and the podcast to air it to read publically someones very privet messages. It's not even between the caller and someone else. Love the ask Nick segment and whole podcast but I'm very disappointed in this one...

The girls with the update on their friends relationship. I said it before but they are fake friends. Why are they so invested in their friend's relationship status, to the point of airing out her dirty laundry in a podcast behind her back? I hope their friend sees this and cuts them off. I can't stand women like this
