ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Dear team, I have a question for the Swami: Why does he say in many occasions that consciousness identifies itself with the body-mind? Wouldn´t it be more accurate to say that mind, especially the part of mind so called ego or causal body which is the one closest to awareness, identifies itself with the awareness that enables it to say “I”, adopting the role of the seer when, in fact, it is the seen likewise everything else appearing in consciousness? This mistake is also seen by the seer or awareness, isn´t it? Otherwise, the mistake couldn´t be pointed out and realized which means that consciousness never identifies itself with anything. To put it in that way is confusing, also because it implies sort of splitting with regard to awareness which is oneness and sameness by definition so, it cannot become the seer as well as the seen. As the swami also uses to say: “always the seer, never the seen” but this refers to awareness that needn´t to be told so, I assume that he is talking to mind or ego in which case, wouldn´t it be more accurate also to say “always the seen, never the seer”. I find the other way round a bit confusing. Thank you.

There are five stages of life - Baalya, Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha and Sanyasa. Dharma, Artha, Kaama & Moksha are the four important pursuits for Hindus. Vedanta is one the six orthodox Darshanas for attaining Moksha. Vedanta has many interpretations. We should follow the natural stages of life and not forget or suppress other Darshanas. We should pursue different pursuits in life in their time and place. Imbalanced life will be hypocritical and not spiritual or vedantic ou yogic. 🙏🏽🕉️🙏🏽

I feel that out actions have reactions immediately , like if I sow a seed I will see the plant bearing fruit may in a few months or years but not in my next life then why so many religions always talk about , what we are today are the result of our past life . A very deep first question and a beautiful answer by swamiji. The question was how can the locus of ignorance be in Brahman. How can darkness and light be in one place. It is possible in one situation, it can happen when you are in lower level of reality. Imagine this, you are sleeping in a pitch dark room and you are dreaming that you are walking in a bright sunny day. Here there is both light and darkness. Similarly every falsity has its locus in truth. From the frame of reference of falsity its locus is in truth, e.g dreams locus is in waking state. From the reference of waking state, there is no dream. Similarly from the frame of reference of ignorance its locus is in Brahman but from the reference of Brahman there is no ignorance. So locus does not mean it is in it, rather it is pointing to the basis.

I had a revelation that we are God's children and this is the way of God, we go through Maya to become God which is infinite unconditional LOVE. To us it's ignorace or suffering or Maya, to God, it is what it is. This child of God is ultimately God himself, which doesn't make sense to the logical mind because we look at Mother and Child as two separate entities but with God, it's all ONE. During the revelation it made sense because the experience was non-dual. The ultimate truth is beyond what the mind can perceive

@6:00 (dreams, and then 11:00 waking up, do you spend time wondering where you were when dreaming?). This reminds me how scientists say 95% of our brain is subconscious, and from _it_ emerges our conscious experience (into the 5% which spends all its time rationalizing what emerged as being real). Science has also found that that emergence takes about 1/2 second. Our conscious experience is 5% of our brain receiving somethig mostly "done" (a little after the fact) and then we spend our existence making sense of that emergent experience. (Rationalizing, explaining to ourself). We know what it feels like to wake up from 1% conscious (sleeping) to 5% (normal mode). Imagine if we could wake up to 10% of our brain. We think 1% to 5% is huge, we're obviously "here" unlike being 1% here. Imagine what it would be like to be 10% here? Maybe what we accept as here is as far from reality as the 1% dream state? I had a dream where an elevator tilted 90 degrees onto its side, and began travelling a road like a car. At some level I knew I was dreaming. But, at no point did I say, "no, wait a moment. This can't possibly be real." I "went" with it like "this is how it is." It felt like a lazy assent, "I have to be someone in this." Opting wasn't an option. "It seems real enough..." It's shocking when you wake up and realize how easily you go along with this stuff. How do we know being "awake" in our 5% state is that much different than being awake at 1% (dreaming)? Our perception of existence could be that far off still. 1% to 5%'s not a lot.

Everything including ignorance has to be in Brahman because the only reality is Brahman.
@sombh1971

16:22 Wonder what the Mandukya has to say on this. From its standpoint this question is moot, isn't it? If only Brahman exists then all of this is merely an illusion, to be dispelled once you wake up, and once you wake up all these questions become moot, for they made sense only in the dream. It's like, when dreaming your dream self might be wondering where does the dream world come from and once you wake up you realise that there was no such world to start with. Similarly when you become enlightened you realise there was no ignorance to start with, it existed only in the dream that you were dreaming.

It is hard to know how much of Jesus teachings have been altered, removed, or added to in the Bible. Because of the seeming contradictions, and non sequitur nature of some of the statements etc. But some of the concepts that Swami Sarvapriyananda is proposing here, have some correspondence to what remains in the Bible. (1) Mankind created in the image of God. (2) God describing Himself as I AM, THAT I AM. (3) Mankind being in God's image is also I AM, THAT I AM. (I AM whatever I "THINK" and "BELIEVE" that I am) Or like Buddha said: “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.” So one of Jesus teachings was: "The Pearl of Great Price", and always seemed to be an unrelated orphan teaching. But this seems to be what Swami Sarvapriyananda is teaching here. When you find it: "sell everything you have to buy it", and let go of the pole.

The locus of ignorance is the most important question which Advaita Vedanta fails to answer. Ignorance in maya leads us to infinite regress. If the ignorance is in Brahman then it cannot be absolute and nirguna. In that case we are saddled with the fallacies of the concept of a Creator. A Creator cannot be omnipresent and omnipotent. It has to be limited and finite and imperfect. The answer that it does not matter whether ignorance is in maya or in Brahman is also unacceptable as both the possibilities do not reveal the truth. Hence, there has to be a truth which is different from the concept of Maya (manifested) and Nirguna Brahman (unmanifested). What could that be? Is it that we are living in virtual reality? There is maya. There is a God (or most likely, Gods) and Tat Tvam Asi is indeed true but THAT which we call Brahman / God / Ishwara is not perfect and we are experiencing maya in search of perfection (not God). But this will dismantle non-dualism and take us back to dualism. Dualism in which "our" God is imperfect. Mankind will not be comfortable with this conclusion, at least at this point in time. Advaita Vedanta connected many dots and hence it is more rational then other darshanas (viewpoints), except maybe Buddhism, but it cannot answer the question : How does the unmanifested manifest itself if it is nirguna? We should have the ability to evolve and accept that Advaita Vedanta is incomplete and does not reveal complete truth. But it does take us close to truth which it does by first improving on other darshanas but which too has deficiencies which can be overcome with a better darshana in view of new information that mankind comes across.

That's called Saguna Brahman.

@@homosapienssapiens4848 Advaita Vedanta says Brahman is the absolute and saguna Brahman is just a Vyavarhika reality. I'm saying we do not know what the absolute reality is. At best we can talk of saguna brahman. That is dualism.

@@vs9324We do not know because, the seeker is the sought.. Advaita solved all the steps till last, but the last step is going beyond mind, and all questions vanish..

@@drumasankar Where something goes beyond mind, belief steps in. Beliefs never reveal truth. If we are living in virtual reality, Upanishads still remain valid. In fact, Rig Veda's nasadiya sukta becomes more insightful. Just Advaita Vedanta becomes incomplete. I use the term incomplete because among the various Hindu schools it is the closest to reality, in my opinion. That is because Advaita Vedanta connects almost all the dots except one. Vishistadvaita may be closer. I don't know. I will have to study Vishistadvaita now.

Advaita Vedanta has never claimed to be complete. In fact the Upanishads themselves mention that even Advaita Vedanta has to be discarded eventually, for language is incapable of capturing reality as it is. It is only a pointer, do what you must with it. Don't become engrossed in the philosophy itself, for the actual intention is to transform yourself.
