She was my little boy crush. Years later I worked for UPS and had pick up at a residence in River Oaks. Huge front door. I knocked and the door opened up and I looked down and it was her!!!! I couldn’t even talk. Lol. I took her package and walked away. A moment I will never forget. Oh, she smiled the whole time. So genuine.

Olga Korbut paved the wave. Until Olga, women's gymnastics wasn't respected; Olga set new standards to achieve, perhaps similar to Roger Bannister's impact on running.

Don't forget about Nadia I think her and Olga were around about the same time. I think Nadia had a little bit greater impact on women's gymnastics than Olga did. Not saying that Olga didn't have a big part bc she did. I wish some of her skills were still allowed to be performed now.

At least one of those moves is no longer allowed due to being deemed too dangerous (I believe) by the Olympic committee (the dismount over the bar)

The strength to do these moves is incredible. You have to have no fear to make the next move or your body won't have the momentum to follow through if you hesitate. I used to do this in high school. It was a lot of fun.

It's truly incredible the decision to put up with the levels of bs some of these gals had to go through to get these pristine routines. Amazing. Such strong women. So graceful. I did too and it was amazing. How about when she landed the vault on a broken ankle? That was the most amazing thing to me. My Uncle was in the Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki Finland scoring 17 goals by himself in soccer ⚽ for the USA. I miss him so much. RIP Uncle Larry Surock.

It was massively popular in the 70's into the mid-eighties because of the cold war. The American movie "American Anthem" is based on it. It's kinda cheesy but gives a slightly accurate depiction of how important and competitive it was back then.

I watched this in my living room with my family back then and I remember the positive energy she created during this performance was palpable. We, along with the rest of the world watching, were struck with awe at how great she was and I had that same feeling watching this now.

I remember watching Mary Lou on tv and being memorized by her talent. My daughter took lessons at Mary Lou's gym after being inspired by her. I was fortunate enough to meet her in Houston. She was a humble sweet girl with a smile that lit up the room! Saw her later as she got older and she was still cute & had that smile! 👍😊⚘

Mary Lou Retton she performed amazingly in the Olympics. She was a phenomenal athlete and gymnast. Really tops in her time. I hope she has gone on to have a phenomenal life as well.

I watched this when 1st aired. I was lucky to see MLR's amazing routine. A GOAT! I made my family watch gymnastics (summer olympics) & ice skating (winter olympics) every year after.
