He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli, while Mattew 1:15 and 16 reads: 15 Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. How about more of an academic answer than theological....Rovert46 is exactly correct. The Gospel "writers" did not get their stories straight. They cannot even agree on who the father of Joseph was. And no....they were not the lineage from Mary. Luke says explicitly that it is Joseph's genealogy (Luke 3:23). You are not the 1st to find this a little troubling. Eusebius even wrote in his The History of the Church, "each believer has been only too eager to dilate at length on these passages." These are theological claims, not historical claims (actually the entirety of the Gospels are not written as histories). Both the genealogies show that Joseph was a direct descendant of King David. But if Joseph is not Jesus' father, then Joseph's genealogies are meaningless as far as Jesus is concerned, and you have to wonder why Matthew and Luke included them in their gospels. The answer, of course, is that the genealogies originally said that Jesus was the son of Joseph and thus Jesus fulfilled the messianic requirement of being a direct descendant of King David. Long after Matthew and Luke wrote the genealogies the church invented (or more likely borrowed from the mystery religions) the doctrine of the virgin birth. Although the virgin birth could be accommodated by inserting a few words into the genealogies to break the physical link between Joseph and Jesus, those same insertions also broke the physical link between David and Jesus. The early church had now created two major problems: 1) to explain away the existence of two genealogies of Joseph, now rendered meaningless, and 2) to explain how Jesus was a descendant of David. Paul says that Jesus "was born of the seed of David" (Romans 1:3). Here the word "seed" is literally in the Greek "sperma." This same Greek word is translated in other verses as "descendant(s)" or "offspring." The point is that the Messiah had to be a physical descendant of King David through the male line. That Jesus had to be a physical descendant of David means that even if Joseph had legally adopted Jesus (as some apologists have suggested), Jesus would still not qualify as Messiah if he had been born of a virgin - seed from the line of David was required. To say they were from Mary's lineage is 100% incorrect. Women did not count in reckoning descent for the simple reason that it was then believed that the complete human was present in the man's sperm. The woman's womb was just the soil in which the seed was planted. Just as there was barren soil that could not produce crops, so also the Bible speaks of barren wombs that could not produce children. This is the reason that although there are many male genealogies in the Bible, there are no female genealogies. This also eliminates the possibility that Jesus could be of the "seed of David" through Mary.

@@mitchellc4 Grace and Peace to you. You make an excellent point. I didn't know that the blind man in John 9:9 used the same language that Jesus used in John 8:58. However, your point doesn't cast doubt on Jesus proclaiming his divinity in John 8:58. Here's why. The blind man used the present tense verb to indicate that he, at that moment, was the person who fit the description of of the one being described by the others in his presence. That verb tense makes sense in that context because he was describing his current state. However, it doesn't make sense for Jesus to use the present tense verb to describe his past state, unless he was trying to make another point and draw attention to another statement he made. Grammatically, it would have made more sense for Jesus to say, "before Abraham was [genesthai], I was [genesthai]." However, Jesus said what he said in order to remind us of Exodus 3:14. The Jews got the point, and that's why they tried to stone him.

No one can know why God created humans. But God sent Jesus to earth to actually break us free from slavery to our own depraved human nature. We can strive to be better than that. We are free to choose. So when someone chooses to follow God, it is not slavery, it is a rational choice. Worship is a natural consequence of learning about God and seeing what he does in your life and the lives of others.

If we think of God as a solitary being then your assessment would be a valid one, but the Christian revelation of God is Trinity. The God revealed in the bible is Father, Son and Spirit..a family. I certainly think people in western countries are a lot more moral than in biblical times, how many wars or conflicts are currently going on around the world as we speak?, we are living in quite peaceful times overall. Dont you think it would have been good if Jesus told us exactly what his thoughts were on homosexuality?, esp if you came down from heaven with a message for all of humanity across the globe?, what is your own view on the gay issue?, is it sinful?, I think it's a perfectly natural thing, it's very common in the animal kingdom, if 2 people of the same sex love eachother why should that be a problem? Yes, I'm against child molestation. But I don't have a voice that will reach humanity, Jesus supposedly came here with a message didnt he? The Bible is very explicit in terms of what should happen to men who sleep with other men, they should be stoned to death. Yet if this was carried out in your neighborhood, you'd be outraged i hope. Our morals have gotten better, theres no doubt of that in my mind.
