For those blasting that guy for just straight up saying the N word - the average Korean won’t have the concept of the wording “the N word” because that’ term (eg the F word, the C word, etc.) is purely English. There’s no alternative. Yes, he is aware that it’s a bad word, but his understanding or connection to it is not the same as those who come from English speaking or non-Asian cultures. Most know now that the N word is really bad, but that’s only if they’re quite up with current/American culture, which you can’t expect EVERYONE in a non-American/Western country to be. So stop blasting him. He was just trying to explain the best way he knew how in a VERY different context to America in a homogeneous culture.

The guy even slightly bow to apologize while the other put his hand on his chest and you could tell how they felt really bad .What a wonderful kind of people .

껌둥이(ggamdoongee) on its own is actually not a bad word. ~둥이 is something that has a characteristics of cuteness. For example if you said 껌둥이 puppy, its just means a cute black puppy. But if you say that to a person, now it becomes a racial slur.

Hi ! Everyone ! First of all, I would like to thank Jay for giving me the chance to do something like this. As a black person learning Korean, there have been numerous times where I have felt discouraged by certain words they use towards ‘us’. The amount of times I’ve heard people telling me, why would you learn their language, they don’t even like you. However, I figured it would be more meaningful to get past this and seek to educate people for the better. Finally, I got the chance to do so thanks to Jay. I hope you enjoy the video and don't think we were just trying to make people uncomfy for our own pleasure. It is an ongoing issue and in my way I tried to contribute to make a little change :) Edit (10/06/2020) I came back to read comments, cuz wow it's already been a year since we did this video. I read so many nice comments and some not so nice comments, but it was really interesting to see the reaction of people. Eventually, I will be reflecting on this video on my channel, within this month. I'll be answering questions people had about this video and several comments people left that need to be addressed. I almost cried because I’m black myself and they kept asking `who said that?’ It touched me and when she said the n word in Korean the boy was shocked at what she was asking and the fact that the girl cried really got me, I always tell my mum not all Koreans are mean, I respect how they helped to explain the words 😢

I’m glad that she explained at the end of the video if the expressions “black brother or sister” were good or bad, I was really confused because it seemed like a hurtful way to call someone, even if some said that it was ok during the video. I see some people calling out the korean guy who said nigger. Yeah obviously it isn't okay but I think in this context it isn't horrible because she did ask for a meaning and I'm sure he was just trying to be honest by saying the word which would give her the meaning at best. It worked since we all understood what he was trying to say 🤷🏾‍♀️ The fact that afterwards he explained it was bad etc means he had no harmful intentions, he knows the weight of those words :) Also this video was quite interesting. If you hesitate to tell someone the meaning of a word or claim you don't use it yourself, it's bad. You wouldn't be so reluctant to say it if you knew there wasn't anything wrong with it.

Sometimes i used before When i was young. my meaning also for respect. in korea, if someone something do well, call like big brother or big sister.(just kidding)so me also call to black big brother.but that 'black'word is wrong. now i know. So i never use any more. please don't upset! and so sorry about that.. Many korean people think black people better athletic ability than others. thats why korean people made that word. that meaning is not negative..but i think we must not use! if i heard "yellow big brother!" As a Asian myself, I was taught that black skin are for poor people or bad people. They said it’s look ugly. Almost every Asian people want to change their skin tones. So, People will say to them like “ You skin look so white and pretty, You must be rich...etc”. I’ve had enough experience bc I have brown skin. My friends or even some of my family always wanted me use whitening products. I sometimes got called “ n-word” in my country language. I think racism in Asian are still high.

I seriously do not understand anyone who goes out of their way to be racist to someone. Like I cant imagine how humiliated, scared, and hurtful it could be to have someone come up to you and call you a slur or make a racist comment to you. My mom is black and she really likes korean culture, language, cusine and etc. And whenever she talks about her wish to visit Korea I get worried about anyone treating her badly. I always say "If you want to go, I'll go with you" just so I can stand up for her or anything.
