National Geographic Travel Photography of Vietnam | Chapter 3

In this series, I showcase my travel photography of Vietnam published in National Geographic. In each episode, we explore a new province of Vietnam photographing for my personal project As Above So Below.
The project is dedicated to documenting the beauty of Vietnam through the people, culture, and landscapes through aerial photographing combined with travel, portrait, and reportage style photography. Each "Above" image is accompanied by a corresponding "Below" image working in harmony and meant to be viewed as a series of diptychs(pairs).
In this chapter, I explore the northern province of Sapa, Vietnam visiting Fansipan (Phan Xi Păng) mountain, the highest point in all of Vietnam. We encounter some rough weather at a crucial time, see how I cope with rain and see Vietnam through my eyes.
Each episode offers a glimpse of the beauty of Vietnam, BTS of my process as a photographer, and concludes with showcasing my final images from each location.

Love this "in the field" videos, where we can see real life situations, including fails. Also, Vietnam is one of my dream destinations, and this video enforces that feeling.

My idea of creative fun. I have been there in better weather and will go again to a homestay in Lao Chai in May. My hope is to photograph and film rice planting and water-filled terraces reflecting sunrise or sunset. Maybe something about how Black Humong die and create tradition patterns in their clothing. Interview locals people. People and Cultures. 😊📷💜

Great video. I loved my visit to Sapa back in 2005. I remember thinking "tourism will destroy this place" - I'm glad that has not entirely happened. You are still worsening my "Leica itch"

This was before I switched to Leica. I use the Hasselblad 95% of the time for my commercial photography business Mott Visuals because that sensor is incredible.

I'm sure your a great photographer -- but maybe trade your hasselblad for a Sony or something weather sealed. Seems a bit crazy to put your fate in a camera that is not weather proof. Just a thought. Have you changed in 2022?

Funny enough we are considering switching to Sony for other reasons but the Hasselblad has been good for many years for my commercial work.

How do individuals react to your taking their photograph without your asking permission? Foggy or not, there must have been lots of people just walking around. Did you decide not to attempt to take their photographs - candid or not - for a reason? Perhaps you just don't do portraits?

SaPa is one of the worst destinations in the area. Sure, if the weather cooperates there are incredible tiered rice paddies to shoot, but over-tourism has created the worst of all experiences for travelers, and even a "trusted" fixer will mostly guide you to places where the locals just want to be performative. If you have a vehicle (something good, 4WD) with time and patience, you can get away to valleys to the east and west and find more genuine experiences. Even the most rustic towns are starting to get over-touristed, but nothing on the scale of SaPa. A big part of what's going on in Vietnam has been caused by the investment and travel appetites of the Chinese. That's how the Mt. Fansipan cable car came to be. Similar things are happening all over...many resorts are being built just for Chinese appetites. Nothing wrong with that... it just may change your shooting plans. Similarly, they are now using the cargo port in DaNang for cruise ships from China. And when they come, the local towns like HoiAn and Hue change radically. A similar phenomenon is happening in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Unbelievable amount of air traffic from China. Big resorts popping up everywhere.
