// Please listen with headphones for this film //
Our collection of Theatre & Performance objects includes props and costumes from many iconic moments in the history of circus, dance, drama, film, opera, pantomime, popular music - and much more. Often these objects played their part in a spectacular visual and auditory experience, but now - when they're displayed in our galleries behind glass - they are normally silent.
We invited sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower to document our preparation for a new gallery display, opening later this year. In this first film curator Yona Lesger lets us see (and hear) pieces being unpacked from storage, before they undergo conservation work.
This first film features Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’ bowler hat and a late-19th-century costume worn by Henry Irving, the actor-manager of the Lyceum Theatre.
Timestamps
1. Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’ bowler hat - 00:58
2. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ hood - 06:16
3. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ invisible glasses - 08:50
4. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ electrified shoe and glove - 10:32
5. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ tights - 12:49

As if V&A museum wasn't cool enough! It's just absolutely incredible how you work with the audience nowadays: quizes in instagram stories and exciting facts in posts, fabulous videos here on youtube -- nothing is boring when it comes to your content. And now -- ASMR. I absolutely adore you, guys. Please kiss your PR department from me (a social approved distant kiss, of course).

this was a brilliant idea, but the presenter was especially amazing in both her passionate yet reserved narration and handling the objects in a VERY ORGANIC manner. I feel too many people (myself included) fail at creating an organic ASMR experience because we forget the fluid, narrative element to exploring objects when we artificially tap and touch them excessively.

This is great! Museum curators and people in charge of restorations seem to be well suited to ASMR due to the delicate handling of objects, even the Schiaparelli video has an unintentional ASMR vibe. You picked interesting items objects to show, and this format allows people to see more details than they might notice in a museum exhibition. Hope we get to see more! :)

Wonderful idea to focus on sound. As a conservator myself, I know that an important part of the sensory input that informs our understanding of the physical reality of an object comes from sound. I do wish I could hear what she says a little better, though.

This was great, very interesting. My only suggestion would be if you could write in the title what this is about (Charlie Chaplin’s hat & Henry Irving’s costume) since some people may be interested in these but not necessarily in the ASMR part. It’d be a shame to miss out on such great content.

I don't care about th ASMR, I'm honoured to see those items up close and I'm deathly jealous of the person who got to hold them I do question the authenticity of that hat, however, as in all of Chaplin's films he uses a soft hat that can be crushed and popped back out again. Also, the stiffness, air vents and inside drawstring make it seem more equestrian than day wear.
