I’m from Rocky Mount, NC. Most people from back home sound just like you or close to it. When I moved to Greensboro back in 2016, everyone I encountered sounded so bland and proper. I became very self conscious of the way I spoke (and I personally don’t even think I sound like people from back home.) My friends here tell me all the time that my accent comes out whenever I’m speaking to someone that was also from my hometown. It’s so weird and interesting to me because I don’t even know how to turn my accent on or off, but apparently it comes and goes depending on the conversation. The crazy part is I’m not even trying to change the way I speak at all lol.

I’ve been watching you for a couple years every day and your videos have helped me get through some of the worst times in my life. They’ve been a source of comfort and relaxation when my world was falling apart. But the thing I’ve liked most about watching you is that I always feel like you’re talking to me. Like you see me (not literally of course, but that you always try to connect with your viewer. Thank you for all the time, love, and effort you put into your videos. I had a similar moment to your "nice to see you again" story, when this stranger started a conversation with me and when we parted ways, he said "take care" and it stuck with me that day and I teared up walking to my car. It was like a hug for my soul. I still get a slightly warm and fuzzy feeling from that phrase. It was said with such sincerity.

hey, mary! i just moved away from home to start college, and it’s been rough. my roommate left me in the apartment we decided to rent together to move back home not even a week into the school year, and i’m learning to adjust to living by myself in a town almost 9 hours from home. difficult isn’t strong enough a word to describe my current situation. but i just thought you should know that your message at the beginning is the first time in 3 weeks that i’ve felt something-anything-akin to comfort. i’m so glad that you’re here, too, and i’m so grateful to have found your channel nearly 2 years ago. you’ll never know just how desperately i needed to hear what you said, and i can never repay the solace you’ve lent me. thank you endlessly :-)

When I watched the movie Junebug for the first time, I was so comforted by Amy Adams’ North Carolina accent. Her intonation and speech rhythm was so lyrical and impressively specific, not just some generic ‘southern’ like another actress might have done. Did anyone else find her accent really familiar? When I started listening to Mary’s videos, it reminded me of that movie and the feeling Amy’s character gave me. 💕

I've come to know a handful of people from and raised in more than one area of the south and it is indeed correct that the accent is different just as it is anywhere. This video was made for me I swearrrr! I love watching enunciation videos where a dialect specialist talks about accents! Its soooo interesting to think about all the mouth shapes and tongue placements, etc, and how they can change a dialect! Im a nerd for accents for sureeee

I’ve really learned to appreciate my accent as I’ve gotten older, so I absolutely love the idea behind this video! I’m from Tennessee, however, I’ve been told that my accent sounds like I’m from a more “southern” state. Because of this, I was made fun of all throughout school. It caused me to be self conscious and to change how I pronounced several words. Now that I’m out of school, I’ve realized how silly that was. I’ve started pronouncing those words the way I used to and I’m very proud of my accent now. I love your accent, by the way! It also makes me feel warm & cozy like you said! 💓

Mary your accent reminds me of my mom's side of the family. To me accents are beautiful just like different languages. To hear you brings back a memory of my Nanny (my mom's mom) she had a fantastic southern accent. Now I'm born and raised in South Texas and my mom from TN. So thank you for bringing back a nostalgic feeling. You keep doin you Mary and I concur the internet being exposed to social media affects us. In every way possible

Love this video. My mama is from Tennessee. I love listening to her talk. She’s been living in the Pacific Northwest for almost 40 years, but still has an accent. She always tells me “I used to say ‘hail’ and folks who weren’t from the south thought I was cursin’. I wasn’t! But bless their hearts, they thought I was! Goodness I still can’t say it without soundin’ like I’m cursin.” 😂😂😂 she’s a doll. I love her very much. My kids call her Memaw…and she’s always telling us about all the different southern accents.

I cried when you told the story of your intro. I hope you see him again so you can tell him. I’m from middle Georgia and pronounce most things exactly like you do. Enjoyed this video Mary ❤️
