Great video to learn from. I am planning to resurface our old asphalt driveway soon. It measures out at 1060 sq ft so it looks like 10 tons of recycled material should work. I can rent a driving roller from a local shop, but looks like I will also need a tractor w a bucket too so I will check into that. Thanks Chris!

Millings are $FREE.99 up here in PA if you find a crew working near you. I drive for a big paving company and I’m constantly giving millings away to nearby farmers since it’s closer than driving to the plant. You did a real good job here.

I just bought a house with a 1200' driveway that is currently gravel, and it is fairly steep, ranging from 8-13* grade (going by the app in my brother's truck). I am looking at using millings instead of gravel to get better traction.

This was very helpful, I don't want to sound over-gratuitous but I cannot for the life of me find anyone doing asphalt millings over base stone. What more, I'm looking someone showing how it's done to use asphalt to create 10-16 inches of lift, over a base layer, in a low area of a pre-planned driveway so that a surface layer can go on top of that once the lift, and the drain channeling that I just put in proves itself, say as a project for next year to finalize this drive road. Not one

My driveway is hard packed sandy soil that my heavy trucks and trailer do not rut. I added a french drain in front of my garage and was thinking of building up the driveway to raise it a little to help direct the water to the lawns. How thick do you lay it, and what do you think of using a box blade? I don't have a FEL...

The millings work well in sloped driveways. The secret is to use a roller on a hot sunny day and roll them in to tighten them up. Also spray a mist of diesel fuel on the millings before rolling them. It helps reactivate the ac in the millings

Hi Chris, we just had 3 people come and give us estimates to asphalt our driveway. 3 different prices for 1100 - 1270 sq ft and processes. Which way would you recommend, one guy said remove asphalt install 3 in of crushed stone compact base and install 3.5 inc type C asphalt, $5600, (2nd )paving, state top grade of gravel. Driveway edged weeded low areas refilled hot tack over old asphalt 2 1/2” State mix will be laid and rolled $7500. So question what’s the better process overlay or removal. (P.s. the overlay guy stated the drive is old and it’s settled already)
@chrisward405
@chrisward405 2 жыл бұрын
Personal opinion would be remove the old asphalt and have fresh installed. I'd opt for 4 inches instead of 3 1/2. If you were to go with the second contractor I'd opt for at least 3 inches. Typically on a new layer of asphalt in Ohio on the roads are 4 inches for high traffic and heavy trucks. If it were me I'd do at least 4 myself because of what goes in and out of my driveway
@topshelf321
@topshelf321 2 жыл бұрын
Basic rule is if it moves when you walk or drive on it you don't want it under asphalt, it will move and crack. If the old stuff is lose and moving around take it up and start over with a good compacted base. Even the large rock used in this video isn't the best base as it will not lock together well and the grinding that where put down will eventually filter down through them letting the rock end up on top. It will however help lock them together so it will be a strong driveway just not a pretty blacktop.
