Time for a little constructive criticism: rather than showing your face talking on the screen while you're discussing a particular device. Sure I still frame of the device especially the rear so people can see the connections while you're talking about them along with a tag showing which one of the three or multiple items that you're discussing in the video. It would require minimal editing to do that. Thanks for the video anyway.

Great review! I like the emotiva TA 1 the best out of all the options. Emotiva really seems to be on the cutting edge for high value hifi. I'm using an Emotiva preamp on my system now, and it really excells. Thanks for all you do, Randy. You really do fill a void in the HiFi review world. Concise, objective. Down to earth and you bring a touch of humor the the traditional crusty, dusty audiophile world. Peace, brother.

For about £120 i snagged an internet tuner that does Spotify Connect, BT & a few other things. Got it hooked up to an old Rotel amp & Quad speakers in my kitchen. Sounds pretty damn good and the best bit... it has a proper screen as well. So much quicker & easier than turning on a tablet connected to the same amp.

Hey Randy. First comment on your channel. I subbed after first viewing one of your vids. I’m an old man and audio head of sorts since my teens. I’ve been watching a couple of weeks and really enjoying the whole package. It seems from what I’ve gleaned is that you have blown up on YT. Super fast growth & subscriber base. Congrats bro. You’re doing fantastic. I had a similar experience in broadcasting as far as finally getting to produce & host my own music show. I just wanted to share my passion for the Blues w/others. I had fun doing it and it took off like a rocket unbeknownst to me. Straightforward honesty discussing gear w/enthusiasm. It comes through to your audience. I’m excited about my stereo rig again! Thanks! ☕️👊🏼😎

I am and have long been a huge fan of Emotiva. I own the Emotiva XPA-2 Power Amp and XDA-2 DAC/Pre-Amp, both Gen 2. I have owned them both for several years and have never had a single problem with either. At 300 wpc the power output per dollar is remarkable IMO and while it's a very simple black box, it's built like a tank and sounds terrific. Emotiva reminds me of the old Adcom stuff from the 1980's. High value components for a real world budget. It's a great time in audio for people on a modest budget!

Nice video, I know this is the "cheap" audio channel, but you have reviewed some not so cheap products in the past. I just bought an integrated amp, the Vincent SV50 to replace my Adcom separates, which I loved for the last two decades and I am thrilled with the musicality of the new Vincent. It didn't have a phono stage, so I picked up the ifi Zen and am thrilled with the new sound of my old vinyl. Though the Adcom had a pretty phenomenal phono stage this is just more detailed and spacious sounding. Now if I can figure out how to patch in my vintage Yamaha EQ I might get to audio nirvana soon. Keep up the good work!

Once again another excellent video. I have many integrated amps, Denon, Marantz, NIKKO, Pioneer... all awesome. My latest journey, was a little S.M.S.L. DA-9. I could stream my phone via bluetooth and plug my old CD player directly into it. Then I went down the rabbit hole of what I could do with it. I wanted to see what this little amp could do with a turntable. Picked up an Ifi Zen phono preamp... which was awesome!... then thought it would be nice to be able to listen with headphones... added a Magnius headphone amp in between... decided to go balanced and added a sub, and couldn't be happier with how it all turned out.
@briansimmons5363

I have the DA-9 and SU-9 stack. Really impressive for sure. I liked the idea or running balanced cables between the two with RCA outs to my sub. That does not work well, for me at least. XLRs on the DA-9 put put 4 VRMS. So with no output adjustment on subwoofer gain out the DA-9, my main speakers play loud and my sub plays way too quiet. Sub RCA are at 2 VRMS and my sub has too little input gain. So runing RCA cables all the way around. Hate to introduce XLR splitters from SU-9 to DA-9 and then a XLR to RCA converter to the sub. Would seem to negate the benefits of XLRs to an extent. Or am I wrong?
@markt.5611
@markt.5611 2 жыл бұрын
@@briansimmons5363 I am not sure why you are doing it that way. I am running balanced from my Ifi Zen preamp right through to the DA-9 and connecting my sub (LFE) to the sub out (SW OUT) of the DA-9.
@briansimmons5363
@briansimmons5363 2 жыл бұрын
@@markt.5611 I think your zen pre amp is putting out a stanadard 2 VRMS signal. My dac is putting out 4 VRMS to the DA-9. My DA-9 is getting a really strong input from the dac so plays loud at low volume or barley any rotation of the volume knob. With low volume knob rotation, the DA-9 is putting out a very weak signal out of the 2 VRMS sub out and sub at max volume is not able to overcome it. Does that make sense or am i doing something wrong? Oh and i don't think you have a ifi zen pre amp, dac perhaps?

Neat vid. I started out looking for 5.1 out of my computer in my office, and am exiting after losing thousands and (happily) giving some vintage gear to my family. I got to dig back into electronics/soldering that I used to do growing up with dad, with solder and cigarette smoke in the background. I would offer that for anyone looking for practical, excellent sound-a working old pioneer, hitachi, marantz, etc. with a modest decoder with digital+bt solves all the problems-split signal for sub with movies, and you’re golden with that and two channel listening. Just my $0.02, squatting on your channel, lol. Don’t spend what I did!!! Here’s yer’ upthumb for the algo…

Looking good and fit in that thumbnail Randy, you must have been hitting the gym hard the last 24 hours. Solid points and opinions about separates, especially amps with pre-outs. Nothing wrong with a good all in one amp or AVR with no preouts, I just feel it limits one for future upgrades or wants.

Please, try the Ayinma A3001 Monoblock amp. It is a sub amp as well as a full range amp, both of which have exceptional sound. Two of these for front power is much better than the TPA3255, since now you have 2 separate power supplies at the same voltage as the 3255( current baby). Plus you can use them as sub frequancy amp as well, tunable from 30 to 300 hz. The funnest mono blocks I have ever used.

I especially agree as to the *type of music* that you want to play is a big factor in choices. A system that Led Zeppelin lovers adore *may well not be the right choice* for the Chicago Symphony or Blue Note recordings. The primary benefit I see to an integrated amp (magnetic phono/aux/Bluetooth/USB/optical/coax/sub out/4 ohm current out/etc., is the stork's nest of cables that it eliminates. You often see nice advertising photos of components on an open rack -- but with no cables showing. But what you get is a haywired system with a dozen or two cables that are hard to make look tidy. It looks more like it belongs in the utility room than the living room. I happen to use a Denon PMA600NE $499 integrated A/B amp in the master bedroom -- as an example. At about 20+ lbs. and full-sized, it's no toy. And you get a headphone output in the bargain.

The SVS Soundbase (and the Emotiva TA1?) has "full size" speaker binding posts, I think? On the smaller units, when you are setting things up, you have to work a little harder to get the speaker wires connected. The Emotiva TA1 is a Class A/B amp, and that puts it at the top of this list for me, as well.

@@michaelwright1602 man, sorry to hear that. 4400X isn't a cheapy, I would have expected great things from that monster. I purchased a "cheaper" S660H (499) to replace a soundbar in the living room. Chose that cause I just needed a basic all in one unit that could lightly push 3 small fronts and a sub. it had all the new inputs for the kids gaming, really good streamer,this model even does Apple play lol. But if I want to listen to music on it, I have to adjust/fiddle with it on certain genres to get good sound..to me. For music there are definitely better amps in this price point and lower..my opinion. Other features are pretty good though, it's family friendly. Shame about your 4400X, I hate spending like that and not being satisfied shortly after. I think at that price point quality stereo sound should be included

Other than a vintage Sony receiver that I acquired in the late 80's and still use, I have always used AVRs for my music listening, sometimes bought new as a one stop solution for both music and TV/video or older higher end second hand AVRs that were too good to pass up. The advantage is that they have every kind of connection you could possibly need, often good quality DACs and a Phono input as well. I currently have an 13 year old Onkyo TX sr806 with 130w a channel with a decent DAC and phono stage which I can connect just about everything I have to it, and I paid next to nothing for it. Prior to that I was using an older Integra AVR which also sounded great for two channel. If I ever want to "upgrade" the sound, all I need to do is add a better and more up to date external DAC. Cant really get better sound for less $ in my opinion.

@paulkerr9128
@paulkerr9128 2 жыл бұрын
@@jedknutson8373 I think that would depend on the source and the DAC itself. For example, a CD player would obviously be connected through toslink or coaxial, then RCA out of the DAC to the AVR. Volume is then controlled by the AVR by passing any volume control function that the DAC might have. I do use a small external USB DAC on my set up with the Onkyo, but only for streaming through my phone, or playing music stored on my phone, as the Onkyo has no USB in. Again, in that scenario, i have the volume on my phone set to max but control the volume out of the AVR using its volume control. Works great.

Hi Randy, I’m becoming more and more intrigued with the Emotiva TA1 integrated amp as I research what I want to purchase over the next few weeks. I’ve been away from the audio scene for a while and I now have the time to spend listening to my old albums, CD’s and streaming music. From all that I read, and liking the integrated components within this unit, it’s at the top of my list. Understanding that it isn’t as warm sounding as other offerings, my concern now is pairing this properly with a set of bookshelf speakers such as KEF Q150, Wharfedale Diamond 12.2, etc. so that I don’t end up with a set up that’s harsh or too forward in sound. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can properly pair the TA1 with a set of speakers that will give me some good bass, nice, crisp treble, but midrange that has some body? I have a good subwoofer that I plan to use, so I do feel I have the bass needs covered. Any suggestions or directions forward would be appreciated.

I'm in the same case as you. As Randy insists upon, Speakers and musical sound are pretty much an individual matter. That said, his analysis are quite enlightening and "just", without imposing some personal taste of his (you can guess if it suits you). One easy solution/process: 1- Lookup his clips talking about speakers, in order to create a list of speakers that you think would suit you; 2- then go to an Audio store to actually listen to them live and settle for those that you like better... Or, if there's no store or stock availability, as a last resort you could go to _

Maybe a receiver could be made to have world class sound. But the fact that it hasn't ever happened, could mean that having tuner circuitry all crammed in the same cabinet as the amp, isn't the ultimate way of doing things. There has been any number of integrated amps that have and have had world class sonics. Not that there haven't been receivers with "good" sound. The more circuits crammed into a space, the more interaction between magnetic and electromagnetic fields. There is so much invisible & unseen and not understood going on inside the chassis of a receiver or amp. An audio guru from the 1970's suggested removing your rotary phone from your room, when listening to music. I don't understand why, but I'm sure I heard an improvement. I repeated it often enough to be certain. I know, it doesn't seem possible. We doubt things that don't have a logical answer, some realize we don't have all the answers yet. There was a guy on one of the major Audio forums, who is gone from that forum now, who claimed to have worked for NASA, and claimed that himself making a phone call to anyone and playing some tones/racket over their telephone, would improve their stereos sound somehow. He charged $60 for this service, and this went on for years and years and years. One guy said that after you picked up the phone (after paying him $60), it sounded like he was making racket and odd noises with a bunch of pots and pans or something on the other end. This was supposed to improve your sound from a remote location. I don't know how many open minded (or gullible) people out there paid him the $60, but I wasn't about to. His rudeness and belittling of other peoples intelligence got him kicked off the forum, I understand. He attempted humor hundreds of times on the forum, and his humor was of such a low grade quality, that I figured if you can't come up with something funny and have such bad judgement as to what is funny, what's the chance that you're so ingenious that you can improve peoples sound by calling them & making a bunch of racket over the telephone lines, that's supposed to improve their sound quality via teleportation or something? Integrated amps do have both the preamp and power amp circuitry in the same chassis. Separate preamps and power amps, throughout the years have been considered the ultimate for sound. But manufacturers often save their best no compromise designs and parts quality for their separates preamps and power amps. They are more expensive and they know that to continue to keep lots of customers loyal to their brand, they must give them their moneys worth, and often do. An integrated amp removes the need for the extra interconnect between pre and power amp, and that is a blessing, as a lot of people would be appalled at how much sound quality is lost"in between" components, even if they have pretty good cables.

@steven2809
@steven2809 2 жыл бұрын
@@mden2490 Good question. The phono preamp is needed to deal with the very low voltages produced by a cartridge and also to apply the RIAA equalisation needed for vinyl. Then the output just becomes like any other analogue source. So no reason why you cannot then connect directly to a receiver input or an integrated amp input. However many audiophiles believe that the 'sound' of their system is most affected by the quality of the preamp stage. So many choose an external preamp into a power amp. The advantage of 'separates' is the use of separate power supplies in each and normally less cross contamination of electrical noise in the equipment. 🙂
